An Island or an Archipelago
Jamaica is a single large island with a lot of variety. Negril's Seven Mile Beach is soft and calm, while the West End cliffs drop into clear coves. Montego Bay has resort beaches minutes from the airport. Ocho Rios is a garden coast with waterfalls like Dunn's River Falls. Inland, the Blue Mountains rise to coffee farms and cool forest. Port Antonio and Treasure Beach offer quieter corners.
The Bahamas is a scatter of flat islands on limestone banks so shallow the sea turns electric blue over white sand. Exuma is the chain for boat days, with sandbars at low tide and Thunderball Grotto. Eleuthera has a long road past empty beaches. Harbour Island has pastel cottages, golf carts and a pink beach three miles long. Nassau and Paradise Island are the big resort scene.
Jamaica's beauty is green and mountainous. The Bahamas' beauty is blue and flat.
Flights and Arrival
Both are close. Nassau's Lynden Pindling International (NAS) has nonstops from about a dozen US cities, including New York, Newark, Boston, Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami and Fort Lauderdale. It's roughly an hour from South Florida and about three hours from New York. The Out Islands are reached by smaller nonstops from Florida or Atlanta, or a 30- to 60-minute hop from Nassau. On the way home, you clear US customs in Nassau before boarding, so arrive three hours early.
Jamaica's Sangster International (MBJ) in Montego Bay has nonstops from many US cities, from about one and a half to five hours. Many resorts are minutes from the airport, while Negril is about an hour and a half by road and Ocho Rios about the same.
The Bahamas is quicker for a Nassau stay. Jamaica is simpler if you want one resort with no extra flights.
Seasons for Each
Jamaica is warm year-round. Its best weather comes from mid-December through April, when it's dry and sunny. This is peak season, with the highest rates. May and June are excellent shoulder months.
The Bahamas is a little cooler in winter. December through April is high season, dry and breezy with daytime highs in the mid 70s to around 80°F, but the water can feel brisk in January and February, especially in the northern islands. Late April through early June is the sweet spot for many couples, with a warmer sea and falling rates. Nassau fills with college groups during spring break.
Hurricane season runs from June through November in both, with the highest risk from August through October. Hurricane Melissa caused serious damage in western Jamaica in October 2025, so confirm your resort's status before booking. In either, book flexible rates and consider travel insurance.
Resorts and Retreats
Jamaica is the home of the couples-only all-inclusive. Couples Swept Away on Seven Mile Beach includes diving and a huge sports complex. Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay has overwater villas and a private island. For boutique style, Rockhouse Hotel in Negril has thatched villas above clear coves, Round Hill has old-Hollywood villas, Jamaica Inn has blue-and-white verandahs in Ocho Rios and GoldenEye, Ian Fleming's former estate, has lagoon cottages near Oracabessa.
The Bahamas leans toward small beach resorts. On Harbour Island, Pink Sands Resort and The Dunmore sit on the famous pink beach, while The Rock House is a stylish boutique hotel in Dunmore Town. The Cove Eleuthera sits on a headland between two private coves. In Exuma, Grand Isle Resort overlooks Emerald Bay, Staniel Cay Yacht Club suits boaters and Fowl Cay Resort is an all-inclusive private island.
Costs Compared
Jamaica is the better value. Couples-only all-inclusives run roughly $400 to $1,000 a night for many room categories, with everything from drinks to tips included. Boutique and historic luxury hotels run roughly $300 to $1,500 a night. Excursions add modest extra costs.
The Bahamas is not a budget destination. Almost everything is imported and a 10 percent VAT plus resort fees and service charges stack up fast. Midrange hotels and small inns often run about $250 to $450 a night in high season, while upscale resorts on Paradise Island, Harbour Island or Exuma commonly cost $600 to $1,500. Private islands like Fowl Cay start around $2,000 a night. Dinners and boat charters add up quickly.
All figures are approximate and swing with season. If you want luxury with predictable costs, Jamaica's all-inclusives are hard to beat.
Things to Do Together
Jamaica's days are varied. Climb Dunn's River Falls together and raft a river on bamboo. Float in a glowing lagoon at night. Watch the cliff divers at Rick's Café and take a sunset catamaran in Negril. Sip coffee grown in the Blue Mountains, visit YS Falls and eat jerk from a roadside grill. Music is everywhere, from reggae to dancehall and Bob Marley's legacy is a point of national pride.
The Bahamas is all about the water. Rent a boat with a captain in Exuma for a day of Pig Beach, nurse sharks at Compass Cay and snorkeling through Thunderball Grotto at slack tide. Rent a golf cart on Harbour Island and walk the pink sand. Drive Eleuthera's long road to empty beaches. In Nassau, visit the Queen's Staircase and eat conch salad at the fish shacks at Arawak Cay.
Safety and Practical Notes
The State Department rates both countries Level 2, exercise increased caution, because of crime. In Jamaica, most violent crime happens away from tourist areas, but don't wander off-resort on foot at night and book tours through your hotel or reputable operators. Persistent beach vendors can be a nuisance.
In the Bahamas, most incidents happen in Nassau and Freeport. The advisory warns visitors away from the Over the Hill neighborhoods south of Shirley Street in Nassau. Use licensed taxis with yellow plates and book boat trips and jet skis only with licensed, insured operators. The Out Islands feel very different and very relaxed.
In both, driving is on the left and the US dollar is widely accepted. Mosquitoes are present, so if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
One or Both
Combining them is possible but usually not worth it. Direct flights between the two are limited, so most couples connect through Miami or Fort Lauderdale, which takes most of a day.
Instead, most couples get more from splitting one country between two bases. In Jamaica, try four nights in Negril for beaches and sunsets, then three in Ocho Rios or Oracabessa for waterfalls and gardens. In the Bahamas, spend two or three nights on Paradise Island for polish and restaurants, then four in Exuma or Harbour Island for quiet water.
With five to seven nights, choose Jamaica for all-inclusive value and island culture, or the Bahamas for clear water and boat days. If you can only take a long weekend, the Bahamas' short flight to Nassau or Harbour Island gives you more beach time.
