Why Honeymoon in Port Antonio
Port Antonio suits couples who would rather explore than lie by a big pool. Within a short drive you have spring-fed lagoons, waterfalls you can climb, quiet beaches and the Blue Mountains rising behind. The scenery is dramatic in a way the flatter west of the island is not.
The hotel scene is small and personal, with boutique retreats and private villas rather than mega-resorts. That means quieter beaches, more contact with local life and a slower rhythm. It is also a place with real history, from Errol Flynn's Hollywood set to the banana boats that once loaded here.
The east was spared the worst of Hurricane Melissa in October 2025. Jamaica's tourist board said soon after that most of Port Antonio was operating. Still, confirm that your hotel and favorite sights are open before booking.
When to Go
Portland is Jamaica's wettest parish, which keeps everything intensely green. Showers can arrive at any time of year, but they are often short.
February through April is usually the best stretch, with warm days, less rain and the dry-season sunshine that also brings higher rates. December and January are lovely but can be showery on this side of the island. May to July is warm and generally good value.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, with the highest risk from August to October. That period also tends to be the wettest in Port Antonio, so it is the weakest window for a honeymoon. Travel insurance that covers storm disruption is wise if you choose late summer or autumn.
Where to Stay
Most places to stay line the coast east of town around San San, Frenchman's Cove and Dragon Bay, where the scenery is best and the lagoons are close.
Geejam, a small luxury retreat at San San, combines cottages in tropical gardens with an in-house recording studio and a well-known restaurant. Trident Hotel, on a rocky point near town, has a dramatic modern design and ocean-facing suites. Hotel Mocking Bird Hill, a small eco-hotel in the hills above Port Antonio, is known for its gardens, art and views over the coast.
Private villas with staff are another strong option. Many come with cooks who prepare Jamaican meals. Because Hurricane Melissa disrupted parts of the island, check recent reviews and confirm opening dates directly with any property before you book.
Romantic Things to Do
- Swim in the Blue Lagoon, a deep cove where cold spring water meets the warm sea and shifts color with the light.
- Float down the Rio Grande on a long bamboo raft steered by a raftsman, a trip popularized by Errol Flynn's parties.
- Climb the cascades at Reach Falls with a guide, then cool off in the pools.
- Spend an afternoon at Frenchman's Cove, where a river runs into a small sandy bay.
- Swim at Winnifred Beach, a community beach with food stalls and local life.
- Take a short boat ride to Navy Island for a picnic or a sunset view back to town.
- Drive into the Blue Mountains for coffee estate tours and cool mountain air.
Getting There and Around
Kingston's Norman Manley International Airport has nonstop flights from cities such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and New York JFK. From Kingston, the drive to Port Antonio takes about two hours through the mountains or along the coast. Montego Bay has far more US nonstops, but the drive east is roughly four hours.
Arrange a hotel transfer or private driver rather than driving yourself, at least on arrival. Roads are winding and potholed in places. Driving is on the left. Once settled, taxis and hotel drivers can take you to beaches and sights.
Food and Drink
Boston Bay, a few miles east of Port Antonio, is often called the birthplace of jerk. Roadside pits smoke pork and chicken over pimento wood, served with hard dough bread and festival, a sweet fried dumpling. It is messy, spicy and essential.
Seafood is excellent along this coast. Look for escovitch fish with pickled peppers, lobster in season and fish tea, a light, peppery broth. Ackee and saltfish is the classic breakfast.
Blue Mountain coffee comes from the hills behind town and is worth buying close to the source. Rum punch and Red Stripe beer are the default drinks. Many boutique hotels have strong restaurants. Villa cooks often turn out the best meals of the trip.
Honeymoon Tips
Expect rain and pack accordingly: a light rain jacket, quick-dry clothing and water shoes for rivers and falls.
Bring Jamaican dollars or small US bills for raft captains, guides and beach vendors. Tipping is customary.
Agree on prices before taxi rides and tours.
Use licensed guides at sites such as Reach Falls and the Rio Grande. Leave valuables at your hotel.
Mosquitoes are active after rain, so pack repellent.
If you want both sides of Jamaica, combine Port Antonio with a few nights in Ocho Rios or Negril. The drive is long, so plan a full travel day or a domestic charter.
