Awasi Atacama

A small adobe lodge where your days are planned for two, not for a group

Awasi Atacama is the most private way to see the Atacama Desert. It is also the best choice in San Pedro for couples who want every excursion on their own schedule. The lodge is small, built from adobe and thatch around a garden and pool. Its defining feature is simple: every room is assigned its own guide and 4x4 vehicle. No group departures, no waiting for strangers, no fixed itinerary.

That changes the experience. If you want to reach the El Tatio geysers before anyone else, you can. If one of you is feeling the altitude, the day can shift to an easy walk and a long lunch. Your guide reads the weather and the crowds and adjusts.

The rate is all-inclusive, covering meals, drinks, excursions and private transfers from Calama. It is one of the most expensive stays in Chile, but for couples who value privacy and flexibility, nothing else in the desert compares. Those who enjoy meeting other travelers on group outings, or want more facilities like a big spa, may prefer Tierra Atacama or Nayara Alto Atacama.

Why Couples Love Awasi Atacama

The private guide is the reason. Most Atacama lodges run small-group outings at set times. At Awasi, the two of you plan each day with your guide over dinner. The plan can change in the morning. You might start early to beat the crowds at a lagoon, stop for a picnic in an empty canyon or stay out late for the sunset when the light is good.

The lodge itself is intimate. With only a handful of rooms, it feels more like a private house than a hotel. Staff learn your preferences quickly and meals are adapted to your tastes.

The design is rooted in the desert. Adobe walls, thatched roofs and local materials keep rooms cool in the day and warm at night. The shady garden is a relief from the glare.

Rooms to Book

There are two room types. The Round Rooms are cozy adobe spaces with a private patio and outdoor shower area, designed for two. The Superior Round Suites offer more room to spread out, with a larger living area.

For a honeymoon, either works. Because you will spend most of each day out exploring with your guide, a Round Room is the value pick. The Superior Round Suite is worth it for longer stays or if you want more space to relax in the afternoons.

All rooms are designed for desert conditions, with thick walls that hold the day's warmth into the cold nights. The outdoor showers are a highlight under the desert sky. Ask for a room facing away from the main path for extra privacy.

Food, Drink and Downtime

The restaurant is reserved for Awasi guests, with a daily menu built from local ingredients and adapted to your preferences. Expect dishes using quinoa, desert herbs and Andean produce alongside Chilean wines. Picnics and packed meals are part of the excursion days, often served somewhere spectacular.

Drinks are included. Take advantage with a pisco sour before dinner by the fire.

The pool is the center of afternoon life, surrounded by loungers and thatched umbrellas. After an early start, a swim and a nap are usually on the agenda. There is no big spa here, so if massages and wellness facilities are a priority, consider combining Awasi with a few nights at a spa lodge, or ask whether treatments can be arranged in your room.

Things to Do

With a private guide and vehicle, you can do almost anything. Popular choices include Laguna Chaxa in the Salar de Atacama to see flamingos, Rainbow Valley with its colored rock layers, sunset in the Valley of the Moon and the El Tatio geysers at dawn.

Horseback riding through the desert is a lovely way to explore the oases around San Pedro. Stargazing sessions show you the southern sky, including the Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way, in some of the clearest air on the planet.

For something different, ask for a long drive to the high-altitude lagoons near the Bolivian border, or a soak in the Puritama hot springs. Your guide will balance strenuous days with easy ones and adapt plans to how you are feeling at altitude.

Getting There

Fly into Santiago (SCL), then take a domestic flight north to Calama El Loa (CJC), which takes about two hours. Awasi includes private transfers between Calama and the lodge, about 100 kilometers or 1.5 hours by road, timed to standard check-in and check-out.

San Pedro sits at more than 2,500 meters, or about 8,200 feet. Drink plenty of water, go easy on alcohol for the first night and plan a gentle first day. Some excursions climb above 13,000 feet. If either of you has heart or lung conditions, check with your doctor before traveling.

The desert is hot by day and cold at night, especially in winter. Pack layers, a warm jacket, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen. A hat is essential. Lip balm and moisturizer help in the very dry air.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want privacy and flexibility above all, yes. Having your own guide and vehicle transforms the Atacama from a group tour into a personal adventure.

It comes at a price. Awasi is among the most expensive stays in Chile, with approximate rates in the range of $2,000 to $3,000 a night for two, all-inclusive. Look for offers on longer stays. Treat these figures as a rough guide and check current rates directly.

Pick elsewhere if you prefer more facilities, a lively atmosphere or lower prices. Tierra Atacama has an excellent spa and indoor pool, while Explora Atacama has its own observatory and horses. Nayara Alto Atacama offers terraced pools and a spa in a valley just outside town. Boutique hotels in San Pedro with locally booked tours cost far less.
