Oil Nut Bay is the most private place to stay on Virgin Gorda. Few resorts in the Caribbean offer this much seclusion with a full resort behind it. It sits on the island's far eastern tip, where no road reaches. Guests arrive by boat or helicopter, then get around in their own electric cart between hillside suites, a beach club with three pools and a small marina village.
For honeymooners, the appeal is space. Even the entry suites are stand-alone, with a soaking tub, an outdoor shower and a patio looking over the water. The larger villas are proper homes. Breakfast, boat transfers from the airport, soft drinks and a cart are folded into every stay, so the logistics disappear once you land.
It is not a couples-only scene. Oil Nut Bay is also a residential community with a kids club and an animal barn. Families fill the big villas at holiday time. Couples who want quiet should book a one-bedroom suite outside school breaks. Those who want a busy bar or lots of restaurants within walking distance should look elsewhere.

Why Couples Love Oil Nut Bay
Arrival sets the tone. A boat collects you from Tortola and runs up through the islands into North Sound before docking below the resort. From then on there are no taxis, no traffic and no day-trippers crowding the beach.
The layout keeps people apart. Suites and villas are spread across slopes and points rather than stacked in blocks. Each guest gets an electric cart, which means a short ride to dinner or the beach and a lot of time spent alone on your own terrace.
The views are big in every direction. To the west you look across North Sound toward Gorda Peak. To the east there is open Atlantic and the outer reefs. Evenings at the Beach Club, with the pools lit up and the sound turning pink, are what most couples remember.
Suites and Villas to Book
The Bay Suites are the natural choice for two. Each is a stand-alone one-bedroom of about 634 square feet set into the hillside just beyond the Beach Club. You get a king bedroom opening onto a patio, a spa bathroom with a soaking tub and a private outdoor shower, a living area and a kitchenette with a wet bar. The location is central, so dinner and the pools are a short cart ride away.
The Cliff Suites sit higher on the slope with wider sea views, a good pick if you want more drama from the terrace.
The villas start at several bedrooms and come with private pools, ocean views and full kitchens. They are wonderful but built for groups. For a honeymoon, put the difference toward a longer stay in a suite instead.
Food, Drink and the Spa
Nova Restaurant is the evening anchor, with a seasonal menu built around local produce and seafood and a dining room that looks over the water. The Beach Club Restaurant handles breakfast, which is included in every stay, along with lunch by the pools. The Pavilion Bar and Lounge is the spot for a cocktail before dinner. You can also order in-villa dining or ask for a picnic to take on a boat.
Because there is nowhere else to eat on this end of the island, menus repeat over a long stay. A dinner off-property at a North Sound restaurant reached by boat breaks things up.
Sundara Spa and its wellness studio offer massage, body treatments and classes. Book a couples treatment for your first full day, when the travel is still in your shoulders.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do
Most days begin and end at the Beach Club, with its three pools, swim-up bar and loungers facing the sound. Water sports are easy to arrange. The calm water of North Sound is ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding and learning to sail together.
Hiking trails run over the headland for sunrise walks. There are tennis and pickleball courts if one of you needs a game. The marina can set you up with a boat for the day. Popular stops include the reefs off Prickly Pear, the beach bars around North Sound and the snorkeling off nearby islands.
A day trip to The Baths is worth it, though it is a long run by boat or road from this end of Virgin Gorda. Go early to beat the crowds, then stop at Spanish Town for lunch on the way back.
Getting There
Fly to Beef Island (EIS) on Tortola, usually via San Juan, Miami or St. Thomas. Oil Nut Bay includes round-trip boat transfers from the airport in every stay. The ride across the Sir Francis Drake Channel and into North Sound is a scenic first look at the islands. Expect some spray if the trade winds are up and keep a light jacket in your hand luggage.
Helicopter transfers can be arranged if you would rather skip the boat. Seas are usually calm in the morning and choppier in the afternoon, so try to land on an early flight.
Once you arrive, the resort issues your own electric cart. There is no road link to the rest of Virgin Gorda, so plan off-property trips with the concierge, who will book boats or a driver from Gun Creek.
Is It Worth It?
If privacy is the priority, Oil Nut Bay is one of the best options in the BVI. The included boat transfers, breakfast and cart make the experience smooth. The suites feel like small homes rather than hotel rooms.
On price, published rates for a Bay Suite have run from about $650 a night in low season to roughly $1,150 in high season and much more over the holidays. A resort fee, tax and service charge together add a little over a quarter on top. Treat all of these as approximate and check current rates before booking.
Skip it if you want a lively scene, many dining options or an all-inclusive bill. Rosewood Little Dix Bay has more restaurants, while Saba Rock is cheaper and more social. Mosquitoes appear at dusk; if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
Insider tips
- Book a Bay Suite for the best balance of location and price; it is a short ride to the Beach Club and Nova.
- Avoid US school holidays if you want the pools quiet, since families fill the villas.
- Arrange at least one dinner by boat elsewhere in North Sound to vary the menu.
- Ask about the resort's one-bedroom suite offers, which have run during the shoulder months.
