In the early 1980s, Francis Ford Coppola found an abandoned lodge deep in the Mountain Pine Ridge of western Belize and fell for it. For over a decade it was his family's private retreat; in 1993 he opened it to guests. Today The Blancaneaux Lodge still carries the feeling of a filmmaker's personal retreat, with thatched cabañas tucked into the hillside, Guatemalan textiles in every room and an Italian kitchen turning out wood-fired pizza from family recipes.

What makes Blancaneaux so right for a honeymoon is the setting. The lodge sits on Privassion Creek, which tumbles over granite boulders into a series of clear, cool pools right below the cabañas. You'll fall asleep to the rush of water, wake to birdsong in the pines and spend your days riding horses, swimming under waterfalls and exploring Maya ruins. It's adventurous, but never rough: espresso machines, turndown service and a creekside spa make sure of that. Pair it with Turtle Inn, Coppola's beach resort, for one of the most romantic two-part honeymoons in Central America.

Highlights at a glance

  • Francis Ford Coppola's private retreat turned lodge
  • Thatched cabañas above a waterfall-laced creek
  • Natural swimming holes, an infinity pool and a creekside hot pool
  • Wood-fired pizza and Coppola family recipes
  • About 20 horses and guided rides in the pine ridge
  • Off-grid hydro power and an organic garden

Up in the Mountain Pine Ridge

The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is a 107,000-acre highland of pine forest, deep ravines, fast rivers and waterfalls, a surprising landscape for anyone who imagines Belize as only beaches and jungle. Blancaneaux sits on the banks of Privassion Creek, its cabañas stepping down toward the water.

The altitude makes a real difference: evenings are noticeably cooler than on the coast, which is why the cabañas rely on fans and screened walls rather than air-conditioning. The lodge has run off the grid since the 1990s thanks to its own hydroelectric plant on the creek. It is also Rainforest Alliance Verified. It feels remote and wild, yet the major Maya sites of western Belize are within day-trip range.

Cabañas, Villas and the Director's Retreat

Blancaneaux has about 20 dwellings, each with thatched roofs, hand-woven Guatemalan fabrics, a private screened porch, a ceiling fan, an espresso machine and a minibar.

  • Honeymoon Cabaña: The obvious choice for newlyweds, designed with couples in mind.
  • Riverfront Cabañas: Perched right above the creek, where the sound of moving water becomes the soundtrack of your stay.
  • Luxury and Luxury Deluxe Cabañas: More space and more polish.
  • Enchanted Cottage: A secluded cottage with its own plunge pool and long forest views.
  • Francis Ford Coppola's Villa: The director's personal retreat, also with a private plunge pool and forest views.

Garden View Cabañas, two-bedroom villas and a family cabaña round out the mix for other travelers.

Dinner, Coppola Style

Food is a big part of the Blancaneaux story. Montagna is the Italian restaurant, where wood-fired pizza and Coppola family recipes share the menu with produce picked that day from the lodge's organic garden. Guatemaltecqua turns to the region instead, serving Guatemalan and Maya dishes, while the Garden Spot sets up open-air candlelit dinners among the vegetable beds, a lovely spot for a romantic evening.

Before dinner, settle in at the Jaguar Bar above Privassion Creek with a Jaguar Juice, a rum cocktail, or a glass of Coppola wine. Food lovers can join a farm-to-fork cooking class that begins in the garden and ends at the table, a fun shared experience that teaches you something to bring home.

The Waterfall Spa and Natural Pools

The Waterfall Spa sits on the banks of the creek. Its hot pool, warmed beside the rushing water, is one of the lodge's quiet pleasures. Massages and treatments are best arranged with the concierge as soon as you arrive, since spots are limited.

Then there's the swimming. Privassion Creek feeds a freshwater infinity pool and a string of natural swimming holes among smooth granite boulders. Tubes and bikes are available whenever you want them, so a lazy afternoon might mean drifting down the creek, followed by a soak in the hot pool and a cocktail at the bar.

Waterfalls, Horses and Maya Cities

Adventure is everywhere. The lodge keeps a stable of about 20 horses for riders of every level. Guided hikes, mountain biking and sunrise birding head into the surrounding pine ridge. Close by, Big Rock Falls drops into a deep swimming hole, while the Rio On Pools spill over granite into clear, sun-warmed basins.

Caracol, the largest Maya city in Belize, lies to the south. Xunantunich and Cahal Pech are near the western border. You can also walk through the Rio Frio Cave or join a chocolate-making tour that follows cacao from pod to bar. Most adventures are guided and best booked a day ahead, so check in with the activities team each evening.

Why Guests Fall in Love

Critics and guests tend to fall for the same things. First is the setting: a secluded property of about 78 acres deep in the pine ridge, with manicured gardens, waterfalls and the constant, soothing rush of Privassion Creek beneath the cabañas. Travel writers have compared the dramatic landscape to the jungle locations of Apocalypse Now, which feels fitting given the owner.

Second is character. Reviewers love that this is a real family retreat, with Coppola memorabilia in the director's villa, Guatemalan textiles in every room and recipes from the family table. Guests regularly praise the wood-fired pizzas, the garden-fresh cooking and the relaxed, friendly staff. The lodge holds a Forbes Travel Guide Recommended rating along with consistently strong traveler scores. Many honeymooners say pairing Blancaneaux with the beach gave them the best of Belize in one trip.

Good to Know

Cabañas are not air-conditioned; fans and the mountain air keep them comfortable. Nights can be cool in winter, so pack a light layer. The rate includes a continental breakfast. A small community fund fee is added to each night. Wi-Fi is available, but coverage is strongest near reception and the bar.

The drive from Belize City takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, partly on unpaved roads, so many couples prefer a charter flight or helicopter, which the lodge's planning office can arrange. Bring sturdy walking shoes, breathable long sleeves and pants for jungle hikes, a wide-brimmed hat and a reusable water bottle. Bring insect repellent for lowland trips to the ruins and caves. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Belize. Ask about the lodge's honeymoon packages, including one that pairs Blancaneaux with Turtle Inn on the coast.

Insider tips

  1. Request a Riverfront Cabaña or the Honeymoon Cabaña to be closest to the sound of the creek.
  2. Book a charter flight in at least one direction to skip the long, bumpy drive.
  3. Reserve spa treatments and adventures as soon as you arrive; most are best booked a day ahead.
  4. Combine Blancaneaux with Turtle Inn in Placencia for a mountains-and-beach honeymoon.
