Turtle Inn

Balinese thatch, barefoot dinners and the Caribbean at the end of your deck

Placencia, BelizeBeachfront Resorts

Turtle Inn is Francis Ford Coppola's beach retreat on the Placencia Peninsula in southern Belize and it is the most romantic place to stay on this stretch of coast. Twenty-eight thatched villas and cottages sit on white sand just north of Placencia Village, furnished with hand-carved Balinese wood and opening onto decks a few steps from the Caribbean.

The Coppolas found this beach in 2001 and the hotel still feels like a personal project. There is a candlelit seafood restaurant overlooking the pool and the sea, a wood-fired pizzeria in the organic garden, a glass-walled wine cellar for tastings and a beach bar that serves rum cocktails at sunset. Rates include a continental breakfast and all dwellings have air conditioning as well as ceiling fans.

For couples, the appeal is barefoot luxury rather than polish. Days are spent snorkeling on the reef, paddling the lagoon, cycling into the village or doing very little in a hammock. The staff can arrange trips to the jaguar reserve at Cockscomb Basin and the howler monkeys of Monkey River. Families are welcome, so this is not a kid-free retreat, but the beach is long and the villas are spread out enough to feel private. Couples who want a high-design spa resort should look at Ambergris Caye instead.

Highlights at a glance

  • 28 thatched villas and cottages with Balinese interiors
  • Seafront Villas a few steps from the Caribbean
  • Wood-fired pizza in the organic garden
  • Five minutes from the Placencia airstrip

Why Couples Love Turtle Inn

The look is the first thing people mention. Thatched roofs, carved Balinese doors and open-air bathrooms give the villas a handmade warmth that most Caribbean resorts lack. Sea breezes move through the rooms and the sound of the waves is constant.

The setting is the second. The Placencia Peninsula is a narrow strip of sand with the Caribbean on one side and a mangrove lagoon on the other, where manatees drift through the channels. You can swim in the sea in the morning and watch the sun set over the lagoon and the Maya Mountains in the evening.

And there is the Coppola touch. The restaurants, the wine cellar and the garden pizzeria feel like the work of people who care about food and atmosphere. It is relaxed without being rustic and personal without being stiff.

Villas and Cottages to Book

Turtle Inn's 28 dwellings fall into a few clear types.

  • Seafront Villas: the honeymoon choice, set right above the sand with direct views of the Caribbean. Wake up, open the doors and walk straight to the water.
  • Garden View Villas: the same thatched style, set back among the palms. Quieter and better value.
  • Garden View and Poolside Garden View Cottages: the entry level, with partial sea views from some.
  • Standalone houses with private pools: Stella's Starfish Cottage, Roman's Lagoon Bungalow, Sofia's Beach House and Francis' Family Pavilion. These are larger and designed with families or groups in mind, though Sofia's Beach House can be a dreamy splurge for two.

All dwellings have air conditioning, ceiling fans and Balinese furnishings. For a honeymoon, the Seafront Villas are the sweet spot of price and romance.

Food, Drink and the Spa

Mare is the main restaurant, a candlelit room overlooking the pool and the sea that focuses on seafood. Gauguin Grill is the casual option for grilled dishes, served barefoot on the beach. Auntie Luba's Kitchen cooks traditional Belizean food, which is worth trying at least once for stewed chicken, rice and beans and fried plantains.

The Pizzeria bakes Napoli-style pies in a wood-burning oven in the organic garden, which also supplies herbs and vegetables to the kitchens. The Wine Aquarium, a glass-encased cellar, hosts wine tastings beside the bottles. The Laughing Fish Bar is the place for sunset cocktails by the sea.

The Sunset Spa offers massages and treatments. Book these with the concierge as soon as you arrive, since slots are limited.

Things to Do

The Belize Barrier Reef sits offshore and the resort's activities team can arrange scuba diving and snorkeling trips to the cayes. Laughing Bird Caye National Park is a popular snorkeling day and in spring, whale shark season at Gladden Spit draws divers from around the world.

On land, the Monkey River Wildlife Adventure combines a boat ride through mangroves with a jungle walk to find howler monkeys. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world's first jaguar preserve, has rainforest trails and waterfalls about an hour away. The resort also offers paddleboards, bicycles and pickleball.

Placencia Village is a short walk or bike ride along the shore. Its pedestrian Sidewalk runs past beach bars, ice cream shops and small galleries. It is an easy evening out, especially on weekends when local bands play.

Getting There

Fly into Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) in Belize City, which has direct flights from several US cities on American, Delta, United and Southwest. From there, Tropic Air flies to the Placencia airstrip (PLJ) in about 35 minutes. The airstrip is around five minutes from the hotel.

The drive from Belize City takes about three to three and a half hours, mostly on the scenic Hummingbird Highway. It is pleasant by day but tiring after a long flight, so most couples choose the short hop.

The resort's Vacation Planners Office can book domestic flights, private charters, helicopter transfers and ground transport. Once at Turtle Inn, you will not need a car. Bicycles are the easiest way to reach the village and taxis are available for longer trips.

Is It Worth It?

Turtle Inn is one of the best-value romantic stays in Belize for couples who love character and good food. The Seafront Villas offer real beachfront luxury at a lower price than many Caribbean resorts of similar quality and breakfast is included.

It is not right for everyone. Families are welcome and the standalone houses are designed for them. The spa is small and there is no all-inclusive plan, so dining costs add up. A 5% Belize Community Fund fee is added to the room rate. Couples who want a larger spa or overwater villas should look at Ambergris Caye.

Mosquitoes and sand flies can be active, especially at dusk. Pack repellent and light long sleeves. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Belize before you book.

Insider tips

  1. Book a Seafront Villa for the best balance of romance and price.
  2. Fly Tropic Air from Belize City instead of driving after a long flight.
  3. Reserve spa treatments on arrival, since slots fill quickly.
  4. Visit in March to May if you want a chance of whale sharks at Gladden Spit.

FAQ

Turtle Inn questions, answered

Is Turtle Inn kid-free?

No. Turtle Inn welcomes families and several of its standalone houses are designed with children in mind. There is even a kids' gelato bar. That said, the resort is spread along the beach and couples in the Seafront Villas tend to feel well removed from family groups.

Which villa is best for a honeymoon?

The Seafront Villas, set right above the sand with views of the Caribbean, are the classic honeymoon choice. For a bigger splurge, Sofia's Beach House has a private pool. Garden View Villas are a good value alternative if you do not mind a short walk to the water.

Does Turtle Inn have air conditioning?

Yes. All Turtle Inn dwellings have air conditioning as well as ceiling fans and floor fans are available. That matters in Belize, where the warmest months can be humid. Free Wi-Fi is available, with hot spots around reception and the bar.

How do you get to Turtle Inn?

Fly into Belize City (BZE), then take a 35-minute Tropic Air flight to the Placencia airstrip (PLJ), about five minutes from the resort. Driving takes three to three and a half hours. The resort's Vacation Planners Office can book flights, charters and ground transfers for you.

Is breakfast included at Turtle Inn?

Yes, a continental breakfast with coffee, juice, pastries, bread and fruit is included in the room rate. A full à la carte breakfast is available for an extra charge. Lunch and dinner are paid separately, since the resort does not offer an all-inclusive plan.
