EOLO is the most romantic place to stay near El Calafate and the lodge to choose if you want Patagonia's silence as well as its glaciers. It stands by itself on a 10,000-acre estancia in the La Anita valley, about 25 minutes west of town on the road toward the Perito Moreno Glacier. There are only 17 rooms, so the lodge never feels busy.
The building takes its cue from old Patagonian ranch houses, with simple lines and very big windows. Rooms look out over the valley, Lago Argentino, the Brazo Rico arm of the lake or the distant Andes. Inside there is an indoor pool, a spa with a sauna, a restaurant serving Argentine cooking and a wine cellar. EOLO is a member of Relais & Châteaux.
It suits couples who want to come back from the glacier to a fire, a glass of Malbec and a sky full of stars. Couples who want restaurants and shops within walking distance, or who are on a tight budget, should stay in town and visit the glacier on a day trip.

Why Couples Love EOLO
The first thing that strikes you is the space. Patagonian steppe rolls away in every direction, with the lake in the distance and mountains on the horizon. You see condors and guanacos more often than other guests.
The lodge is designed to frame that view. Big windows make the landscape the decoration and common areas are warm and quiet, with fireplaces and deep sofas for the long evenings of summer, when it stays light until late.
The small size means service is personal. The team helps plan your days around the weather, which changes quickly here and private guides can lead excursions on the estancia. After a day on the ice, coming back to a place this calm is the honeymoon part of the trip.
Rooms to Book
All 17 rooms are designed around their windows, with simple rustic décor, stone bathrooms and central heating that keeps things cozy on cold nights.
The main choice is the view. Some rooms face Lago Argentino and the Brazo Rico arm of the lake, others the La Anita valley and the mountains. On a clear day you can see far across the steppe toward the Andes. All are good, so tell the lodge whether you prefer water or mountains and ask for its best available room for a honeymoon.
With so few rooms, EOLO fills months ahead for December through February. Book early and plan on three or four nights, enough for the glacier, a day on the lake and one slow day on the estancia.
Food, Drink and the Spa
The restaurant serves Argentine cooking built on Patagonian ingredients, with lamb as the regional specialty and an extensive wine cellar to match. Breakfast is included and the lodge serves afternoon tea. Ask when you book exactly which meals your rate includes, as packages vary.
The spa is small but well chosen: an indoor pool with views, a sauna and massage treatments. There is also an outdoor hot tub and a yoga deck. A late soak after the glacier, watching the light fade over the valley, is one of the best moments of the stay.
Because the lodge is remote, you will eat most dinners here. That is part of the appeal: no driving, no reservations and a view instead of a street outside.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do
The Perito Moreno Glacier is the reason you are here. The lodge is roughly halfway between town and the glacier, which shortens the drive. Spend hours on the walkways watching for ice to calve, or book a guided ice walk with crampons on the glacier itself.
On another day, cruise Lago Argentino to the Upsala Glacier and the icebergs of the northern arms of the lake. Back at EOLO, the estancia offers horseback riding, mountain biking, trekking and bird watching, with condors common overhead. Horseback riding may cost extra.
In town, Laguna Nimez is a nature reserve where flamingos feed at dusk. Most couples also add El Chaltén, about three hours north, for hiking around Mount Fitz Roy.
Getting There
El Calafate Airport (FTE) has frequent flights from Buenos Aires, roughly three hours from Aeroparque (AEP) or Ezeiza (EZE). There are also connections from Bariloche and Ushuaia in season. From the airport, the drive to EOLO takes about 40 minutes, skirting town to reach Ruta Provincial 11.
The lodge can arrange transfers and excursions, so you do not need a car. If you prefer independence, renting a car lets you set your own schedule at the glacier, arriving early before the tour buses. The roads are paved to the national park, but gravel roads on the estancias call for care.
Combine El Calafate with Buenos Aires and either Bariloche or Torres del Paine across the border in Chile.
Is It Worth It?
EOLO is one of the most expensive stays in the El Calafate area, with booking sites showing rates from about $1,100 a night for two. Prices are approximate and change by season and package.
It is worth it if you want the landscape to be part of your stay, not just your day trips. A town hotel can be a fine base for the glacier, but you lose the silence, the space and the stars. For many couples, that is the whole point of Patagonia.
Pick elsewhere if you want to walk to restaurants in town or if you are watching your budget closely. Xelena Hotel & Suites, on the lakeshore at the edge of town, offers lake views and a spa for much less. Estancia Cristina is wilder still, reached only by boat.
Good to Know
The main season runs roughly October to April, with December to February the peak. Days are long in summer, with light until around 10 p.m., which leaves plenty of time for the glacier and a late dinner. Spring and autumn are quieter and can be beautiful, though colder.
Patagonian wind is famous. It can be strong and cold even in summer, so pack a windproof jacket, warm layers, a hat and sunglasses. UV is strong at this latitude, so bring sunscreen too.
EOLO does not accept young children; listings indicate a minimum age of 12, so confirm with the lodge if traveling with family. The dress code is smart casual and the atmosphere is quiet. Wi-Fi is available.
Insider tips
- Book three or four nights so you can move the glacier day if the weather turns.
- Ask the lodge to time your glacier visit early, before the tour buses arrive.
- Confirm exactly which meals and excursions your rate covers before you arrive.
- Pack windproof layers even in January; the steppe gets cold after sunset.
