The short answer

Kangaroo Island is a superb honeymoon for wildlife-loving couples who want empty roads and wild coast. Walk among sea lions at Seal Bay, watch fur seals under Admirals Arch and catch sunset at Remarkable Rocks, then taste island gin, oysters and honey. October to April brings the warmest weather. Southern Ocean Lodge, rebuilt after the fires, is the all-inclusive splurge; ocean-view cottages cost far less. Plan two to four nights and avoid driving at dusk. Don't miss a ranger-led walk at Seal Bay.

Best for
  • Wildlife lovers and photographers
  • Food and gin fans
  • Couples pairing it with the Barossa
Maybe skip it if
  • You'd rather not drive long distances
  • You want nightlife and busy towns

Kangaroo Island lies off the coast of South Australia, a short flight or ferry from Adelaide. It is Australia's third-largest island, larger than Rhode Island, but has only a few thousand residents. Much of it is farmland and bush, with a long, empty coastline of cliffs, white beaches and granite headlands.

The island is best known for wildlife. Kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and koalas are easy to spot, sea lions lie on the sand at Seal Bay and New Zealand fur seals crowd the rocks beneath Admirals Arch. In early 2020, bushfires burned nearly half the island, including most of Flinders Chase National Park. The bush has regrown remarkably and the island has rebuilt its tourism, including its most famous lodge.

For couples, Kangaroo Island offers seclusion, wild scenery and excellent local food and drink. It pairs naturally with the Barossa and Adelaide. This guide covers how long to stay, where to sleep and how to see the island's highlights without rushing.

Why Honeymoon on Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island feels like a secret even though it is well known in Australia. Roads are quiet, beaches are often empty and wildlife is everywhere. Few places in the country let you see so many native animals in the wild in such a short time.

It is also a place for slowing down. Days revolve around coastal walks, wildlife encounters and long lunches with local produce. Nights are dark and still, with stars overhead.

The island has a strong food scene for its size, built on oysters, honey from a protected Ligurian bee population, sheep's milk cheese, gin and wine. Many producers welcome visitors for tastings.

The luxury option is outstanding. Southern Ocean Lodge, rebuilt after the fires and reopened in late 2023, sits on a cliff above the Southern Ocean and is one of Australia's top honeymoon stays.

When to Go

Late spring through early autumn, roughly October to April, brings the warmest weather, with days in the 70s and low 80s. Beaches are at their best and long evenings suit sunset at Remarkable Rocks.

Spring, from September to November, brings wildflowers and baby animals, including joeys in pouches.

Winter, from June to August, is cool and can be wet and windy, with highs in the 50s and low 60s. It is quiet. Wildlife viewing remains good. Southern right whales pass the coast in winter.

Summer school holidays in January are the busiest time, with higher prices and limited availability. Book ahead if you plan to travel then. Bushfire risk is also higher in summer, so check conditions and follow local advice.

Where to Stay

Southern Ocean Lodge is the island's signature stay. Every suite faces the ocean. The all-inclusive rate covers meals, drinks and guided experiences across the island. It is expensive, but for many couples it is the highlight of their trip.

For something more affordable, look at self-contained cottages and farm stays, many with ocean views or private beaches. Kingscote, the main town, has motels and guesthouses close to restaurants. Penneshaw, where the ferry arrives, is small and charming.

The island is large, so where you stay affects driving times. Staying on the south or west coast puts you closer to Flinders Chase and Seal Bay, while the north and east offer calmer beaches and more dining options. Two to four nights is a good length.

Romantic Things to Do

Walk among Australian sea lions on the beach at Seal Bay. Guided tours take you onto the sand to watch them rest and play.

Visit Remarkable Rocks at sunset. These granite boulders, carved by wind and sea, are covered in orange lichen and perch on a dome above the ocean.

Walk down to Admirals Arch, a rock arch where New Zealand fur seals rest on the rocks below.

Slide down the dunes at Little Sahara on a sandboard. It is a playful way to spend an afternoon.

Swim at Stokes Bay, reached through a narrow passage between boulders, or at Vivonne Bay, a long arc of sand on the south coast.

Visit local producers for tastings of gin, wine, honey and cheese. Many offer platters for an easy lunch.

Getting There and Around

Fly from Adelaide to Kingscote, which takes about 35 minutes. Alternatively, drive about two hours from Adelaide to Cape Jervis and take the SeaLink car ferry to Penneshaw, a crossing of about 45 minutes.

You need a car to explore. The island is about 90 miles long. Distances between sights are significant. Many roads are unsealed, so drive carefully and check whether your rental agreement allows gravel roads.

Do not drive at dawn, dusk or night if you can avoid it. Kangaroos and wallabies are very active and collisions are common.

If you prefer not to drive, guided tours run from Adelaide and from the island. Southern Ocean Lodge includes transfers and excursions.

Food and Drink

Kangaroo Island has a reputation for high-quality produce. Ligurian bees, protected here since the 1880s, produce honey sold across the island. Oysters from the island's sheltered bays are excellent. Marron, a freshwater crayfish, is a local specialty.

Kangaroo Island Spirits makes award-winning gin using local botanicals. Several wineries offer tastings too. Island Pure, a sheep dairy, produces cheese and yogurt.

Kingscote and Penneshaw have the most restaurants and cafés. In more remote areas, options are limited, so plan meals and carry snacks.

For a romantic meal, pack a picnic with local produce and find a quiet beach or lookout for sunset.

Honeymoon Tips

Stay at least two nights, preferably three or four. Day trips from Adelaide involve long travel and leave little time to enjoy the island.

Buy a park pass that covers the island's national parks and conservation areas.

Plan your days by region. The island is large and backtracking wastes time.

Fill up on fuel and supplies in Kingscote or Penneshaw before heading to remote areas.

Do not feed wildlife and keep a respectful distance from sea lions and seals.

Book Southern Ocean Lodge well ahead, as it has limited suites and is popular year-round.

Pack binoculars. Much of the best wildlife watching happens at a distance, from echidnas in the scrub to dolphins off the north coast.

FAQ

Kangaroo Island honeymoon FAQ

How many days should we spend on Kangaroo Island?

Two to four nights is ideal. That gives you time to see Seal Bay, Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, visit local producers and relax. A day trip from Adelaide is possible but rushed, with most of the day spent traveling.

Has Kangaroo Island recovered from the bushfires?

Largely, yes. The 2019 to 2020 fires burned close to half the island, including much of Flinders Chase National Park. The bush has regrown and wildlife is recovering, with visitor facilities and Southern Ocean Lodge rebuilt. You may still see signs of the fires in some areas.

Is Southern Ocean Lodge worth it for a honeymoon?

For couples who can afford it, yes. The setting is spectacular and the all-inclusive rate covers meals, drinks and guided experiences. It is one of Australia's top lodges. If it is beyond your budget, a self-contained cottage with an ocean view is a romantic alternative.

Should we take the ferry or fly to Kangaroo Island?

Flying is faster, taking about 35 minutes from Adelaide. The ferry is useful if you want to bring a rental car from the mainland, which is often cheaper. The drive to Cape Jervis takes about two hours, so the ferry route adds time but offers coastal views.

What animals can we see on Kangaroo Island?

Kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, echidnas, sea lions and New Zealand fur seals are all commonly seen. Birdlife is rich, including the rare glossy black cockatoo. Whales pass in winter and dolphins are often seen in the bays. The quietest sightings usually come early in the morning on back roads and at the edges of bushland.
