Why Honeymoon in Byron Bay
Byron has a laid-back confidence that is easy to like. Mornings start with a walk up to the lighthouse or a swim at The Pass. Afternoons are for long lunches in the hinterland or a nap on the beach. Evenings bring cocktails at sunset and dinner in town.
The nature is close at hand. Dolphins surf the waves off Main Beach, humpback whales pass the cape from around June to November and Julian Rocks, just offshore, is a protected marine reserve with turtles, rays and seasonal leopard sharks.
The hinterland adds another dimension. Rolling green hills lead to villages such as Bangalow, Newrybar and Federal, where you can browse markets, sample local produce and swim in waterfall pools.
Byron also offers a good range of romantic accommodation, from beachfront boutique hotels to rainforest retreats with spas.
When to Go
The best time is autumn and spring. From April to May and September to November, days are warm and mostly dry, with temperatures in the 70s. The town is also less crowded than in summer.
Winter, June to August, is mild with sunny days in the mid-60s to low 70s and cool nights. It is whale season. The water is clear, though cooler for swimming.
Summer, December to February, is hot and humid, with frequent storms. It is the busiest season, especially during school holidays from mid-December to late January, when prices peak and the town fills up.
Easter can also be busy, with school holidays and, in some years, a big music festival just outside town. Check event dates before booking.
Where to Stay
Wategos Beach, a small, sheltered beach below the cape, is the most romantic location. Raes on Wategos is a boutique hotel on the sand with Mediterranean-style suites and a well-regarded restaurant. It is intimate and books out well ahead.
In town, you can walk to restaurants and Main Beach. Options include boutique hotels and apartments, some with pools and ocean views.
For a rainforest retreat, Crystalbrook Byron sits among native rainforest a few minutes south of town, with a spa and a pool surrounded by trees.
In the hinterland, farm stays, villas and cottages around Bangalow and Newrybar offer peace and views over the hills, a 15 to 20-minute drive from the beach. Many couples combine a few nights in town with a few in the hinterland.
Romantic Things to Do
Walk the Cape Byron Walking Track, a loop of about two and a half miles that passes the lighthouse and the easternmost point of the mainland. Go at sunrise for the best light and fewer people.
Kayak with dolphins. Guided tours paddle out from Main Beach to look for dolphins, turtles and, in season, whales.
Snorkel or dive at Julian Rocks, a short boat ride offshore, with turtles, rays and many fish.
Drive into the hinterland for lunch in Bangalow or Newrybar, then swim at a waterfall in Nightcap National Park.
Watch whales from the lighthouse or Wategos between June and November. A whale-watching cruise brings you closer.
Take a couples massage at one of Byron's many spas and wellness centers.
Getting There and Around
Fly into Ballina Byron Gateway Airport, about 30 minutes south, or Gold Coast Airport, about 50 minutes north. Both have direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne. From the US, fly into Brisbane, which has nonstops from Los Angeles and Dallas–Fort Worth among others, then drive about two hours south or connect to a domestic flight.
A rental car is useful for exploring the hinterland and beaches beyond town. In town, walking and cycling are easy, as most places are close together.
Parking in central Byron is limited and paid, particularly in summer. Some hotels offer parking, so check before booking.
Shuttle buses connect the airports with Byron Bay if you prefer not to drive.
Food and Drink
Byron's food scene is relaxed but serious, with an emphasis on local produce. Cafés serve excellent coffee and healthy breakfasts.
The Farm, just outside town, is a working farm with a restaurant, bakery and produce store, a good stop for lunch. In the hinterland, Harvest in Newrybar and cafés in Bangalow are popular with couples.
Seafood is fresh, with local prawns, fish and oysters. Raes on Wategos serves Mediterranean-influenced dishes with ocean views.
The region is known for macadamias, coffee and avocados. Local breweries and distilleries offer tastings.
For sunset drinks, head to a rooftop or beach bar. Book ahead for dinner in summer.
Honeymoon Tips
Visit outside summer school holidays if you can. Prices drop and the town is calmer.
Start early. The lighthouse walk and beaches are quieter at sunrise.
Swim at patrolled beaches between the flags. Rips can be strong at some beaches.
Book Raes on Wategos and popular restaurants well ahead.
Combine Byron with the Gold Coast hinterland or Brisbane, or pair it with the Whitsundays for a contrast between the surf coast and the tropical islands.
Bring a light jacket for winter evenings and insect repellent for the hinterland.
Finally, give yourselves one unplanned day. Byron rewards wandering, whether that means a second swim, a nap in the shade or an afternoon you spend entirely at the beach.
