Reached by boat through the icebergs, with the Upsala Glacier next door

Estancia Cristina is the most remote place you can sleep near El Calafate and the most dramatic arrival in Patagonia. The lodge sits on an old sheep estancia inside Los Glaciares National Park, on a fjord-like arm of Lago Argentino near the Upsala Glacier. No road reaches it. You get there by boat from Puerto Punta Bandera, sailing up the Brazo Upsala past icebergs before turning into Canal Cristina.

There are 20 rooms in converted estancia buildings, a main restaurant, a lounge and a small heritage museum that tells the story of the family who settled this land. Stays are sold as full-board programs that include the boat, meals with wine, guided expeditions and the national park fee.

It suits couples who want wilderness more than luxury: big walks, horseback rides, glacier viewpoints and quiet evenings far from anywhere. The lodge suggests three nights. Couples who want a spa, room service or fast Wi-Fi should base themselves at EOLO or in town and visit the estancia on a day trip.

Highlights at a glance

  • Inside Los Glaciares National Park near the Upsala Glacier
  • Full board with wine and guided expeditions included
  • 20 rooms in a historic estancia
  • Heritage Museum tour included

Why Couples Choose Estancia Cristina

The journey is the first reason. The boat ride crosses milky turquoise water among blue icebergs, with mountains rising straight from the lake. By the time you step ashore, the town feels very far away.

The second reason is the place itself. Day visitors leave in the afternoon and then the estancia belongs to overnight guests. Evenings are long and quiet, with the light lingering on the peaks. The food is a highlight of reviews.

The third reason is access. Staying here lets you join guided expeditions to the Upsala Glacier lookout and into the surrounding valleys, landscapes few visitors to El Calafate ever see. For couples who like hiking, it is one of the great honeymoon experiences in Argentina.

Rooms and Programs to Book

Estancia Cristina has 20 rooms in converted estancia buildings. Expect comfortable, simple rooms with a rustic Patagonian character rather than lavish suites. The setting outside the window is the luxury.

Stays are sold as programs of one, two or three nights, with extra nights available. Book the three-night program, which the lodge itself recommends. One night barely covers the boat journey and a single walk. Three nights give you time for the Upsala Glacier expedition, a full day of trekking or riding and a slow morning to enjoy the place.

The season runs roughly from mid-October to the end of April. The quietest months are October, November, March and April. December through February is peak season with higher rates.

Food, Drink and the Spa

Stays are full board. Breakfast, lunch or a packed lunch on expedition days and dinner are included, along with non-alcoholic drinks and a selection of wine, other drinks or beer with meals. A premium wine list is available at extra cost.

Meals are served in the main restaurant, with regional Patagonian cooking. Guests regularly single out the food in reviews and after a long day outdoors, a hearty dinner with Argentine wine feels exactly right.

There is no spa here and that is part of the point. Evenings are for the lounge, a book and the view. If you want massages and a pool, add a night or two at EOLO or a lakeside hotel in town before or after, so you get both wilderness and pampering.

Things to Do

Guided expeditions are included and chosen from a menu. The highlight is the Glaciar Upsala lookout, a viewpoint above one of the largest glaciers in South America, with the ice field stretching beyond it. Trekking routes, such as the Walk the Wild Side expedition, explore the valleys and ridges around the estancia and self-guided trails start from the lodge.

Horseback riding is offered and fishing expeditions can be arranged. Private expeditions and private horseback riding or trekking cost extra and depend on availability.

Don't skip the Heritage Museum, where a guided tour explains how settlers ran a sheep farm here, cut off from the rest of the world. Save the Perito Moreno Glacier for a separate day from El Calafate.

Getting There

Fly to El Calafate Airport (FTE), about three hours from Buenos Aires and spend at least one night in town. The program includes a shared transfer from your El Calafate hotel to Puerto Punta Bandera, on Lago Argentino.

From there, the boat follows the Brazo Upsala and Canal Cristina, with a snack on board, before reaching the estancia. The return follows the same route. Boat schedules depend on the weather, since wind on Lago Argentino can be strong, so build a spare day into your itinerary in case of a delay.

Pack light and bring a small daypack, waterproof jacket, warm layers, sturdy hiking shoes, sunscreen and sunglasses. Wi-Fi is not included in the program, so plan to be largely offline.

Is It Worth It?

Estancia Cristina is expensive. The lodge's published three-night double program costs about $3,100 per person in the shoulder season, which works out to roughly $2,070 a night for the two of you, before 21 percent VAT. Peak-season programs cost a little more. Prices are approximate.

That covers transfers, the boat, the national park fee, full board with wine, guided expeditions and the museum tour, so the true comparison is with an all-inclusive safari lodge, not a hotel. For active couples who want genuine wilderness, it is worth it.

Pick elsewhere if you want luxury interiors, spa time or a short stay. A day visit to the estancia is possible and costs much less and EOLO offers seclusion with more comforts.

Good to Know

The weather rules everything in this part of Patagonia. Wind, rain and sun can come in the same afternoon and boat trips can be delayed. Bring layers and an easy attitude.

The lodge welcomes children, with reduced rates for some ages, though the remote setting and long walks mean most guests are adults. Check-in is at 2 p.m. and check-out at 10 a.m., timed around the boat.

A 30 percent deposit confirms a booking, with the balance due before arrival. Non-resident foreigners paying in foreign currency or with a foreign card are exempt from VAT on accommodation and breakfast, according to the lodge, so ask how that applies to your program. Tips are not included.

Insider tips

  1. Book the three-night program; one night is mostly travel.
  2. Leave a spare day in El Calafate in case wind delays the boat.
  3. Bring cash or a card for gratuities and premium wines, which are extra.
  4. Pair your stay with a spa night at EOLO or in town for balance.
