Gecko Hotel & Beach Club is the classic Formentera choice for couples who want to wake up on the sand. It sits right on Migjorn, the island's long south-coast beach, at Ca Marí, with 30 rooms over two floors, a garden and a pool at the edge of the sea. It is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and its relaxed style fits the island well.
Days here are simple. Swim from the beach in clear turquoise water, eat at Orilla, the hotel's seafront restaurant, spend the afternoon at the beach club and watch the light change over the Mediterranean. Massages and wellness treatments can be arranged and the hotel's garden hosts weddings and celebrations.
It suits couples who want barefoot luxury rather than a formal resort. The rooms are stylish rather than enormous and the atmosphere is laid-back, with families welcome. The beach club draws outside visitors in high summer, so the hotel is livelier in July and August. The season is short: Gecko closes from November to April, so plan your honeymoon between May and October.

Why Couples Love Gecko
The location is the reason to book. Migjorn is one of Formentera's longest beaches, a sweep of white sand and clear water on the island's south coast and the hotel opens straight onto it. You can be in the sea within a minute of leaving your room.
The style suits the island: relaxed, unpretentious and stylish, with a beach club atmosphere rather than formal service. It feels more like a well-run house by the sea than a big hotel.
The scale helps too. With just 30 rooms, the hotel rarely feels crowded, even when the restaurant and beach club are busy. In the evenings, the beach quiets down and the hotel becomes a peaceful place for dinner and a drink under the stars. Couples who want to do very little in a beautiful place will find Gecko an easy fit.
Rooms to Book
Gecko's 30 rooms are spread over two floors and most sleep two with a queen bed. The categories include:
- Doble Gecko: the entry-level double, a comfortable base for beach days.
- Sunset Gecko and Sunrise Gecko: doubles whose names hint at evening or morning light.
- Pool Patio and Pool Garden: rooms close to the pool and gardens.
- Pool Corner and Gran Pool Garden: larger rooms that sleep up to three.
- Loft Gecko: a loft-style room.
For a honeymoon, the Sunset Gecko rooms are a romantic choice, while the Pool Garden rooms give you easy access to the pool and gardens. Ask the hotel which rooms have the best sea views during your dates and request a quieter location if you plan to rest in the afternoons, as the beach club can be lively.
Food, Drink and the Beach Club
Orilla, the hotel's restaurant, looks over Migjorn beach and serves Mediterranean food made with fresh, local ingredients and some international influences. Lunch here, with your feet almost in the sand, is a highlight. Dinner on the terrace as the beach empties is quieter and more romantic.
The beach club is the social heart of the hotel, with loungers, drinks and a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. In high summer, it attracts visitors from around the island, so book loungers and lunch tables ahead.
Massages and wellness treatments can be arranged, which is a nice way to fill a hot afternoon. Formentera also has excellent restaurants scattered along its beaches and villages. Try a long lunch at one of the Migjorn beach restaurants, then dinner in Sant Francesc or Es Pujols and finish with a sunset drink at Cap de Barbaria on a clear evening.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do
Formentera is small and flat, so it is easy to explore by scooter, bicycle or electric car. Ses Illetes, the famous sand spit in the north, has some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean; arrive early in summer, since parking is limited and an access fee applies to vehicles in the natural park. From there you can wade or take a boat across to the Espalmador islet.
Cycle the green routes through the island's interior, visit the lighthouse at Cap de Barbaria for sunset and drive up to La Mola, the plateau at the island's eastern end, for its lighthouse and craft market.
The sun is very strong, so bring a high-SPF sunscreen, hats and plenty of water. Swim cautiously on windy days on Migjorn, when waves and currents can build. Jellyfish appear at times; ask staff about conditions before you swim.
Getting There
Formentera has no airport. Fly to Ibiza Airport (IBZ), which has connections from many European hubs, then take a taxi of about 20 minutes to Ibiza port. Fast ferries run to La Savina in about 30 minutes. From La Savina, Gecko is roughly 15 minutes by taxi.
There are no nonstop flights from the US to Ibiza in most seasons, so most couples connect through Barcelona, Madrid or another European city. Many combine a few nights in Barcelona with Formentera.
On the island, rent a scooter, an electric car or bicycles in La Savina. Distances are short and roads are quiet outside July and August. Gecko is closed from November to April. June and September are the best months for warm water, long days and smaller crowds, with May and early October quieter still.
Is It Worth It?
For a beach-focused honeymoon on Formentera, yes. Approximate rates often start around $450 a night for two in the shoulder season, rising significantly in July and August. That is in line with the island's limited supply of good hotels and the beachfront location justifies the price.
It is not for everyone. Couples who want a large spa or a kid-free hotel should look elsewhere; Es Marès Hotel & Spa in Sant Francesc has a spa and a more urban setting. Those who want a view of the sunset over the sea from their hotel might prefer Hotel Cala Saona & Spa on the west coast.
For couples who want barefoot luxury, a beautiful beach and the slow pace of Formentera, Gecko is one of the island's best honeymoon bases. Book early; rooms sell out for summer months well ahead.
