Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel is Cape Town's grand old dame and the city's best choice for couples who want history, gardens and good restaurants within walking distance. The pink-walled hotel opened in 1899 and still sits in about nine acres of lawns, flower beds and old trees at the foot of Table Mountain, in the leafy Gardens neighborhood just above the city center.

Locals call it the Nellie. Afternoon tea in the Lounge is a Cape Town ritual and Planet Bar is one of the city's favorite places for a Champagne cocktail. The hotel has 196 rooms and suites, seven places to eat and drink, the Librisa Spa and two outdoor pools.

It suits couples who want to explore the city on foot by day and come back to a green, quiet retreat. Kloof Street's restaurants and bars are a short walk away and the hotel runs shared transfers to the V&A Waterfront. It is not a beach hotel and it welcomes families, with a kids' club and tennis courts. If you want waves under your balcony, stay on the Atlantic seaboard and come here for tea.

Highlights at a glance

  • A pink grand hotel from 1899
  • About nine acres of gardens below Table Mountain
  • Afternoon tea in the Lounge
  • Seven restaurants and bars, including Planet Bar
  • Librisa Spa and two outdoor pools

Why Couples Love the Mount Nelson

The gardens make the hotel. Step through the gates on Orange Street and the traffic fades behind old trees, lawns and flower beds, with the flat top of Table Mountain filling the sky behind the main building. Breakfast on the veranda or a drink by the pool feels a world away from the city, even though the center is a short walk away.

The hotel also has a sense of occasion that suits a honeymoon. The pink facade, the polished lounges and the long history of famous guests give it a storybook quality without feeling stuffy.

Its location is the other big draw. You can walk to the Company's Garden, the museums and the cafes of Kloof Street. That makes it easy to mix sightseeing with long lunches, then retreat to the garden for a nap before dinner. Few Cape Town hotels balance city access and calm this well.

Rooms and Suites to Book

With 196 rooms and suites, the choice is wide.

  • Rooms: from about 32 to 63 square meters, the entry point. Fine for couples who will be out most of the day.
  • Suites: from about 44 square meters upward, with separate seating areas. Many have garden or mountain views.
  • Specialty Suites: 48 to 89 square meters, with more distinctive layouts and decor.
  • Signature Suites: three larger suites of 88 to 180 square meters for a splurge.

Some rooms and suites sit in historic cottages around the grounds, which feel more private than the main building. For a honeymoon, a suite with a Table Mountain view is worth the step up, since the mountain is the backdrop you came for. When you book, ask for a quiet location away from the main pool and event spaces, especially on weekends when weddings use the gardens.

Food, Drink and the Spa

The Mount Nelson has seven venues. Afternoon tea is served in the Lounge and is worth booking for your first or last day. The Verandah focuses on seasonal South African food, Amura on seafood and The Red Room by Chefs Warehouse on Pan-Asian small plates. Oasis offers farm-to-table dining, The Fountain by Planet Bar serves meals outdoors and Planet Bar itself is the place for cocktails and Champagne.

That range means you could eat well here for several nights without leaving. Still, the Kloof Street dining scene is so close that most couples split their evenings.

The Librisa Spa offers treatments alongside a beauty salon and fitness center. Book a couples massage for the afternoon after you hike Lion's Head or Table Mountain. Two outdoor pools give you choices when the sun is out; ask staff which is quieter that day.

Things to Do

The hotel makes Cape Town's center easy. Walk through the Company's Garden to the South African Museum and the National Gallery, then on to the colorful houses of the Bo-Kaap. Kloof Street, a few minutes away, has cafes, wine bars and some of the city's best casual restaurants.

The lower Table Mountain cableway station is a short drive. Go early on the first clear day, or hike up via Platteklip Gorge if you are both fit and start in the cool of the morning. The hotel's shared transfers take you to the V&A Waterfront for boat trips and Robben Island tours.

For beach days, Camps Bay and Clifton are 15 to 20 minutes by car over Kloof Nek. The Constantia wine valley is about 30 minutes away. After dark, take a ride-hailing car between neighborhoods rather than walking long distances, which is standard advice across the city.

Getting There

Cape Town International Airport (CPT) is about 30 minutes from the hotel by car. Belmond can arrange transfers, or you can take a ride-hailing car from the arrivals area. Nonstop flights connect the US with Cape Town, which makes this an easy first stop on a South Africa honeymoon.

You don't need a car while staying here. The location is walkable for the city center and Kloof Street, the hotel runs complimentary shared transfers to the V&A Waterfront and ride-hailing apps cover everything else. Hire a car only for the day you drive to Cape Point or the Winelands, or book a private driver through the concierge.

A popular sequence is three or four nights here, then two or three in Franschhoek or Stellenbosch before flying north for a safari.

Is It Worth It?

Yes, if you value character and location over sea views. The Mount Nelson gives you a famous grand hotel, a large garden, a spa and a city on your doorstep at approximate rates that usually start around $600 a night for two outside the December to February peak, with suites much higher.

Couples who dream of ocean sunsets from bed will be happier on the Atlantic seaboard at Ellerman House or The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa. Those who want a small, intimate property may find nearly 200 rooms too many and the family-friendly facilities mean you will share the pools with children in holiday periods.

For a classic, gracious base with excellent food and the easiest access to central Cape Town, the Nellie remains a strong honeymoon choice.

Insider tips

  1. Book afternoon tea in the Lounge for your arrival day; it is the gentlest cure for a long flight.
  2. Ask for a mountain-view suite or a garden cottage away from the event lawns.
  3. Use the shared transfer to the V&A Waterfront in the morning, then walk back through the Company's Garden.
  4. Keep one dinner for The Red Room by Chefs Warehouse, which feels different from the rest of the hotel.

FAQ

Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel questions, answered

Why is the Mount Nelson pink?

The pink facade has been the hotel's signature for generations and it is now one of Cape Town's most photographed buildings. The hotel opened in 1899 and its locals' nickname is the Nellie. Ask staff about the stories behind the color and the hotel's famous guests during afternoon tea.

Is the Mount Nelson near the beach?

No. The hotel is in the Gardens neighborhood at the foot of Table Mountain, close to the city center. Camps Bay and Clifton are about 15 to 20 minutes by car. If beaches matter most, pair a few nights here with a stay on the Atlantic seaboard or plan beach days by car.

Which room should honeymooners book at the Mount Nelson?

A suite with a Table Mountain view is the best balance of space and setting. Suites start at about 44 square meters, compared with 32 for the smallest rooms. If privacy matters, ask about the historic cottages in the grounds. Request a spot away from the event lawns on weekends, when weddings can be busy.

Is the Mount Nelson kid-free?

No, it welcomes families and has a kids' club, tennis courts and two outdoor pools. The grounds are large enough that it rarely feels crowded and the lounges and bars have a grown-up atmosphere in the evening. Couples wanting a quieter pool should ask staff which one is calmer that day.

How much does the Mount Nelson cost?

As an approximate guide, entry rooms usually start around $600 a night for two outside the December to February peak, with suites and signature suites rising well above $1,000. Rates depend heavily on season and the rand exchange rate. Check Belmond's site for current prices.
