Montpelier Nevis, long known as Montpelier Plantation & Beach, is the plantation inn to choose on Nevis if you want history, good food and a private beach without the size of a resort. It sits on the lower slopes of Nevis Peak on the grounds of one of the island's original 18th-century sugar estates, with about 60 acres of gardens and just 18 rooms and villas, each with its own veranda.

The estate has a romantic footnote: Horatio Nelson married Frances Nisbet here in 1787. Today the old stone sugar mill is set for private candlelit dinners at Mill Privée, while The Terrace looks out toward St. Kitts and Indigo serves lunch by the pool. A shuttle runs guests down to Montpelier Beach, a quiet three-acre cove with cabanas, hammocks and a beach bar.

Rates include a full English breakfast, turndown and beach transfers. Montpelier suits couples who want an intimate, well-run inn with real character. It is not on the sand and children from age 5 are welcome, so couples who want a beachfront resort or a strictly kid-free stay should compare other options on the island.

Why Couples Love Montpelier

Montpelier gets the balance right between an old estate and a comfortable hotel. The gardens are the setting for everything: paths wind between stone walls, tropical trees and lawns. The views stretch over the sea to St. Kitts. With so few rooms, it feels more like staying at a country house than at a hotel.

The Hoffman family has owned and guided Montpelier since 2002. The inn has the personal touch that comes with that. Evenings unfold at a relaxed pace over cocktails and dinner.

The private beach solves the classic plantation-inn problem. Many of Nevis's historic inns sit inland, but here a regular shuttle takes you to your own stretch of sand, with lunch brought to your lounger.

Rooms and Villas to Book

The Premier Rooms are the entry category, comfortable and individually styled with a private veranda. For a honeymoon, the Signature Rooms are worth the step up for extra space and polish.

The Garden Suite is the honeymoon pick if the budget allows. It is the room featured in the hotel's Honeymoon Bliss package, which bundles seven nights. It gives you more room to spread out among the gardens.

The Villa Collection includes the Tamarind Villa and the Saddle Hill View Villa, the most private and most expensive options on the estate. They suit couples who want a house of their own or are celebrating with family.

Every room is styled differently, so ask the hotel about views and layout when you book.

Food, Drink and the Old Mill

Dining is one of Montpelier's strengths. The Terrace is the main open-air restaurant, with views toward St. Kitts that are at their best as the sun goes down. Indigo, beside the pool, is the relaxed choice for lunch and hosts a lively burger night with live music on Mondays.

The highlight for honeymooners is Mill Privée, set inside the estate's historic stone sugar mill. It is used for private dinners. A candlelit meal for two among the old stone walls is the evening most couples remember.

Two bars serve cocktails, wine and rum. Breakfast, included in your rate, is a full English affair. Book Mill Privée when you reserve the room, since there is only one mill.

Things to Do

Spend at least one full day at Montpelier Beach, about 15 minutes from the hotel. It is a three-acre stretch in a quiet cove, with cabanas, loungers and hammocks along the shore, a beach bar, picnic lunches delivered to your lounger and occasional barbecues. The hotel runs a regular shuttle.

Around the estate, there is a tennis court and a library room for rainy afternoons. Nearby, Charlestown has stone Georgian streets and the museum at Alexander Hamilton's birthplace. Soak in the volcanic hot springs at Bath, hike the rainforest slopes of Nevis Peak with a guide or take a rum punch on Pinney's Beach.

Watch for vervet monkeys in the gardens. Mosquitoes can bite at dusk, so pack repellent. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before you go.

Getting There

Most US travelers fly into Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (SKB) on St. Kitts, which has seasonal and some year-round nonstop flights from US hubs. From there, a water taxi or ferry crosses to Nevis in 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the boat and the route. The hotel can help arrange the crossing and the drive to Montpelier.

Nevis has its own small airport, Vance W. Amory International (NEV), which handles regional flights from nearby islands.

A car is useful for exploring but not essential, since the hotel runs beach transfers and taxis are easy to book. Driving is on the left. Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website before you book.

Is It Worth It?

Yes, especially outside peak season. Premier Rooms run about $335 a night from April to mid-December and about $525 from late December through March. Signature Rooms run about $525 to $745 and the Garden Suite about $745 to $965. The villas cost about $1,120 to $1,700. Add about 25% for tax and service. Treat all prices as approximate.

Breakfast, turndown, Wi-Fi and beach transfers are included, which helps the value. You give up beachfront rooms, a big spa and resort-style facilities.

Couples who want to step from their room onto the sand should look at the Four Seasons on Pinney's Beach or Nisbet Plantation. Couples who want a romantic estate with history and excellent dinners will find Montpelier hard to beat.

Insider tips

  1. Reserve Mill Privée for your celebration dinner when you book the room.
  2. Look at the Honeymoon Bliss package if you are staying seven nights in the Garden Suite.
  3. Travel between April and mid-December for much lower room rates.
  4. Spend at least one full day at Montpelier Beach and order the picnic lunch.

Is Montpelier Nevis kid-free?

Not strictly. Montpelier welcomes children aged 5 and over. With only 18 rooms and a calm, grown-up atmosphere, it still feels quiet and couple-focused most of the year, especially outside school holidays.

What is included in the room rate at Montpelier Nevis?

Rates include a full English breakfast, nightly turndown, use of the private beach with transfers, the tennis court, a TV and library room, concierge services and Wi-Fi. Tax and service, currently about 25%, are added on top. Lunch, dinner and drinks are extra.

What is Mill Privée at Montpelier?
