Rosewood Kauri Cliffs is the grandest honeymoon lodge in Northland and one of the most complete luxury stays in New Zealand. It sits on a 6,000-acre estate above Matauri Bay, north of the Bay of Islands, with suites facing the Pacific and the Cavalli Islands. The property has three private beaches, including the rare Pink Beach, a championship golf course and a spa set in native forest.
The lodge has 22 guest suites in cottages spread along the hillside, plus an Owners Cottage and private villas with their own pools. The main lodge has the feel of a plantation-style country house, with verandas, fireplaces and a formal dining room. It became part of Rosewood Hotels after many years as The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs.
It suits couples who want a slow, polished stay with plenty to do: golf for one or both of you, beach picnics, forest walks and long dinners. Plan at least three nights. In summer a two-night minimum applies. The drive or short flight from Auckland makes a quick visit hard to justify.

Why Couples Love Kauri Cliffs
The estate is enormous, which gives it real privacy. You can spend a morning walking through native forest to a waterfall, an afternoon alone on a beach and an evening watching the light change over the Cavalli Islands without meeting more than a few other guests.
The golf course gets the headlines. It is a par-72 championship course designed by David Harman, with many holes running along the cliffs, so even non-golfers enjoy riding along for the views.
For couples who do not play, the three private beaches are the real treasure. Pink Beach gets its color from crushed shells and is used for private picnics and seafood feasts cooked by a chef. The farm setting adds texture too, with cattle on the hills and ATV tours across the estate. Formal dinners finish the day. Men need a jacket in the dining room.
Suites and Villas to Book
Most guests stay in the Grand Ocean View Junior Suites, about 70 square meters each, set in cottages with large private balconies over the golf course and the ocean. They have room to spread out and an outdoor space for sunset drinks. These are the right choice for most honeymoons, offering the view and privacy without villa prices.
For a bigger splurge, the Kauri Cliffs Two Bedroom Villa has about 200 square meters, a private infinity pool, a hot tub and its own courtyard. It is designed for families but works well for a couple who want their own pool. The Owners Cottage and the Four Bedroom Villa are aimed at groups.
Ask for a suite toward the end of a cottage row with an uninterrupted ocean view. Mention your honeymoon when booking. Summer stays from mid December to March have a two-night minimum.
Food, Drink and the Spa
The Dining Room serves a menu that changes daily, built around Northland seafood, lamb and beef from the region and vegetables from the gardens. Dinner is formal by New Zealand standards: men wear a jacket and both partners dress up a little. Private dining can also be arranged on request.
The best meal of the stay is often outside. The lodge's beach feasts on Pink Beach have a personal chef grilling seafood or lamb for you on the sand. Book one early in your stay so you can move it if the weather turns.
The Spa sits in native forest away from the main lodge. It has a sauna, a hot tub and a heated pool for long, slow afternoons. The lodge also has an outdoor infinity pool with views down to the sea.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do
There is enough on the estate to fill several days:
- Play the championship golf course, with clifftop holes over the Pacific
- Picnic or swim on the three private beaches, including Pink Beach
- Walk through native forest to waterfalls and lookouts
- Take an ATV tour across the farm and coastline
- Book a couples' treatment at the spa
Beyond the estate, the Bay of Islands is about 45 minutes south. You can sail among the islands, cruise to the Hole in the Rock or visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. Kerikeri, closer by, has orchards, cafes and New Zealand's oldest stone building. Matauri Bay itself is good for a swim. The lodge can arrange fishing and diving trips to the Cavalli Islands.
Getting There
Fly from Auckland (AKL) to Bay of Islands (Kerikeri) Airport (KKE), about 45 minutes. The lodge is about 25 minutes by car from the airport. Transfers can be arranged when you book. Light aircraft and helicopters can also fly directly from Auckland to the estate, which is popular with couples on a tight schedule.
Driving from Auckland takes about three and a half to four hours via State Highway 1. The road is scenic but slow in places, so break the journey with a stop in Whangarei or on the coast.
If you are combining Kauri Cliffs with Russell or Paihia, drive south after your stay and spend a night or two on the water. Many couples start a New Zealand honeymoon here after arriving in Auckland, then fly south to Queenstown for the mountains.
Is It Worth It?
For couples who want a full luxury experience in Northland, yes. Kauri Cliffs offers a combination you will not find elsewhere in the region: private beaches, a major golf course, a spa in the forest and a dining room that takes itself seriously. The scale of the estate means you rarely feel crowded.
It is expensive. Rates are quoted per person, which adds up quickly over several nights. Check exactly what your rate includes, since inclusions can differ between offers.
Couples who prefer a casual, sea-level stay with easy walks to restaurants will be happier in Russell, where the Duke of Marlborough Hotel sits on the waterfront. Those who want a private villa may prefer Eagles Nest above Russell. For a classic, polished lodge with a farm, cliffs and beaches all to itself, Kauri Cliffs is the one.
