Pink granite peaks, oysters in waders and every meal taken care of

Saffire Freycinet is Tasmania's most celebrated honeymoon lodge and one of the best in Australia. It sits above Great Oyster Bay on the island's east coast, facing the Hazards, a range of pink granite peaks that glow at sunrise and sunset. Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay are on the doorstep.

The stay is all-inclusive. Breakfast, lunch and dinner at Palate restaurant are covered, along with a selection of drinks including Tasmanian wines, evening canapés and a daily replenished minibar. Complimentary experiences of one to three hours are part of the rate too, such as a guided visit to the Freycinet Marine Oyster Farm or an evening of stargazing. The lodge has been awarded MICHELIN Keys.

Saffire suits couples who love food, wine and wild landscapes and want everything handled in a calm, design-led setting. Days are for walking, kayaking and eating well; evenings for a fire and a glass of pinot noir. It suits less well if you want tropical beaches, nightlife or value. This is one of the most expensive stays in the country. Tasmania's weather can be cool at any time of year.

Highlights at a glance

  • Direct views of the Hazards across Great Oyster Bay
  • All meals, drinks and minibar included
  • Oyster farm visit in waders
  • Palate restaurant for in-house guests only
  • Plunge pools in the Private Pavilions

Why Couples Love Saffire

The view is what you remember. Every suite faces across the bay to the Hazards, so you wake to granite turning pink and finish the day watching the same peaks fade to grey. The lodge's curved, wave-like roof and glass walls frame the scene without competing with it.

The experiences make it more than a pretty room. On the oyster farm visit, you pull on waders and stand in the bay while a farmer shucks oysters straight from the water. The Connection to Country walk, led by Palawa artist Mick Quillam, shares the Aboriginal story of the land. Saffire After Dark is an hour of guided stargazing under very dark skies.

Service is warm and personal, never stiff. Staff learn what you like quickly and plan your days around the weather, which can change several times in an afternoon.

Suites and Pavilions to Book

All suites face Great Oyster Bay and the Hazards. Choose by space and private features.

  • Luxury Suites, about 80 square meters, are finished in Tasmanian timbers with a private deck and bay views. Official rates start from about AUD 3,300 a night for two (approximate).
  • Signature Suites, about 96 square meters, add an indoor fireplace and a deep bath with a view across the water to the Hazards. From about AUD 3,800 (approximate), this is the best honeymoon choice for most couples.
  • Private Pavilions, about 140 square meters, have separate living and dining areas, a kitchenette and a plunge pool in a private courtyard. From about AUD 4,000 (approximate), they are the most private option.

The Saffire Jewel, an 800 square meter three-bedroom villa with its own pool, chef and host, is for families and groups.

Palate, The Lounge and The Spa

Palate is reserved for in-house guests and looks straight out at the Hazards. Breakfast showcases local fruit, berries, eggs and baked goods. Lunch is à la carte, with seafood, meats and garden vegetables. At dinner you choose a daily changing degustation or an à la carte menu. Seasonal produce is selected daily. The wine list leans on cool-climate bottles from nearby vineyards.

The Lounge is where evenings begin, with cocktails from 5:30pm and fresh canapés. Ask for a Madame Baudin, the house signature drink. The included selection features small-batch gins and single malt whiskies.

The Spa uses native botanicals and warm stones from the Hazards' pink granite. Treatments cost extra, from about AUD 190 for 30 minutes (approximate). The Decadent Milk Bath can be shared by two. A studio gym with views is part of the stay.

Things to Do

Freycinet National Park is right next door. The walk to the Wineglass Bay Lookout is the classic, with a steeper descent to the beach itself if you want a swim in very fresh water. Longer hikes over the Hazards suit fit couples who want a full day.

The included experiences fill gaps between walks. Visit the oyster farm, try beekeeping, join the Connection to Country walk or book the stargazing session. Signature Experiences, such as longer guided excursions, cost extra and should be booked before you arrive.

On calmer days, kayak on Great Oyster Bay or take a boat cruise to Wineglass Bay from Coles Bay. Wildlife is part of daily life here: wallabies graze around the lodge, while sea eagles, dolphins and seals are often seen on the water. Pack layers and a rain jacket for every outing.

Getting There

Launceston Airport (LST) is about two hours away by car. Hobart Airport (HBA) is about two and a half hours by road along the east coast. Both have direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne, which connect to US gateways.

The lodge can arrange a chauffeured car from either airport. From Hobart, a Freycinet Air helicopter flies to the coast in under 45 minutes and can route over Wineglass Bay and the Hazards. Above & Beyond runs seaplane transfers from Hobart that land on the water near the lodge. Saffire guests arriving in Hobart can use a private lounge while transfers are arranged.

If you prefer to drive, the coast road is beautiful but slow, with wildlife on the road at dusk. Plan to arrive in daylight. Ask the lodge for transfer prices, since they are not published.

Is It Worth It?

For a once-in-a-lifetime splurge, yes. Saffire combines a dramatic setting, outstanding food and genuinely interesting included experiences. With meals, drinks and activities covered, the real daily cost is closer to the headline rate than at many luxury hotels.

It is still very expensive. Rates start around AUD 3,300 a night for two in a Luxury Suite (approximate). Spa treatments, Signature Experiences and transfers are extra. Two nights is the sensible minimum; three lets you fit in Wineglass Bay, the oyster farm and a slow day.

Book a Signature Suite for the fireplace and bath with a view. Couples on a smaller budget can stay at Freycinet Lodge inside the national park and come for the same walks. Pair Saffire with a couple of nights in Hobart at MACq 01 or The Henry Jones Art Hotel.

Insider tips

  1. Book a Signature Suite for the fireplace and the deep bath facing the Hazards.
  2. Schedule the oyster farm visit early in your stay in case weather forces a change.
  3. Take the helicopter from Hobart in at least one direction for the view over Wineglass Bay.
  4. Reserve Signature Experiences before arrival; they book out and are not included.
