Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort is the romantic classic of Bel Ombre: an all-suite hotel styled like a 19th-century sugar planter's house, with white verandas, a river winding through tropical gardens and a lagoon beach out front. It is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and sits on the edge of the old Bel Ombre estate, which also holds two golf courses, a nature reserve and the restored Château de Bel Ombre.
It suits couples who want a proper resort honeymoon with things to do beyond the beach. You can swim under waterfalls in the reserve in the morning, play La Réserve Golf Links in the afternoon and eat at the château at night, all without leaving the estate.
Two details matter for honeymooners. First, the resort welcomes families, but it has a kid-free wing with its own suite categories, so you can choose quiet. Second, the meal plans are flexible, from half board to a Gourmet Bliss plan that covers most of the estate's restaurants. Official rates start at roughly €476 a night for a garden-view Deluxe Suite and climb steeply for beachfront positions.

Why Couples Love Heritage Le Telfair
The south coast is the least developed shore of Mauritius. Bel Ombre shows why that is an advantage. Green hills from the Black River Gorges come almost down to the sea. There is no nightlife strip, just the lagoon, the estate and a handful of resorts.
Le Telfair leans into that setting. Its low buildings sit among lawns and old trees, with the river crossing the grounds and suites opening onto shaded terraces. The look is polished colonial rather than modern minimalist, with dark wood, louvered shutters and soft colors. The feel is calm and grown-up, especially in the kid-free wing. Evenings are for a cocktail on the veranda of The Cavendish Bar and Lounge, then a slow dinner, which is exactly what most couples want after the long flight to the Indian Ocean.
Suites to Book
Every room is a suite. The resort sells them in two groups. Standard categories start with the 62 m² Deluxe Suite in the gardens and climb through Junior and Senior Suites to the 104 m² Ocean Beachfront Suite. The kid-free wing has four of its own categories: Deluxe Seaview, Deluxe Beachfront, Junior Beachfront and Senior Sea View.
For a honeymoon, book in the kid-free wing. A Deluxe Beachfront Suite, about 62 m², puts you a few steps from the sand with quieter neighbors. Official rates start around €690 a night. If the budget stretches, the Junior Beachfront Suite in the same wing adds space for long lazy afternoons indoors when rain passes through.
Garden-view suites are the value play and still generous in size, but you will walk a few minutes to the beach. Rates vary with dates, so compare a few weeks if you are flexible.
Food, Drink and the Spa
The estate's restaurants are a real strength. At Le Telfair itself, Annabella's, Gin'Ja and Le Palmier give you three different moods without leaving the resort. C Beach Club sits on the sand nearby. Le Château de Bel Ombre, a restored colonial mansion in formal gardens, is the dress-up dinner of the stay. The golf clubhouses add casual lunches.
The Gourmet Bliss plan covers almost every restaurant on the Bel Ombre estate, with lobster and foie gras excluded. It is worth pricing against half board, which is limited to a few venues.
The spa is large: six treatment rooms, two outdoor suites, a honeymoon suite, a vitality pool, two hammams and two saunas, plus a relaxation zone. Book the couples' honeymoon suite for a treatment together and ask about a hammam session first.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do
Bel Ombre has more variety than most beach resorts in Mauritius because so much of it happens on land.
- Explore the Bel Ombre Nature Reserve on foot, by quad or by e-bike, with natural pools and waterfalls for a swim.
- Play golf on Le Château Golf Course or the clifftop La Réserve Golf Links.
- Drive west to the Gris Gris cliffs, where waves break hard against black rock.
- Head inland to Chamarel for the Seven Colored Earths, a waterfall viewpoint and rum tasting.
- Take a catamaran or snorkel trip on calm days inside the reef.
The ocean along the south coast is wilder than in the north, so swim only inside the lagoon, follow the resort's flag system and ask about currents before snorkeling near any break in the reef.
Getting There
Fly into Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) in the southeast of the island. Bel Ombre is about 50 to 60 minutes away by car along the south coast and through cane fields. The resort can arrange private transfers, which is the easiest choice after a long-haul flight.
From the US there are no nonstop flights, so most couples connect through Dubai, Doha, Paris, Johannesburg or another hub. Building in a night of rest on the way, or booking a later check-out on departure, helps a lot.
On the estate, shuttles and short walks connect the hotels, restaurants and golf courses. To see more of the island, hire a driver for a day rather than renting a car. Roads are narrow, driving is on the left and the drive up to Chamarel and the gorges is steep and winding.
Is It Worth It?
For couples who want a resort with real landscape around it, yes. Le Telfair's combination of large suites, a kid-free wing, a serious spa and an estate full of restaurants and activities is hard to match on the south coast. The Gourmet Bliss plan can make it good value if you like to eat well and try different places.
It is not the place for a beach-bar scene or easy access to shops and restaurants outside the resort. Bel Ombre is remote by Mauritian standards, so most evenings stay on the estate. Couples who want the softest, calmest swimming beaches and sunrise views should look at the east coast around Belle Mare. Those who want ultra-modern design or a private pool villa will find better fits elsewhere on the island.
For a classic, elegant honeymoon base, it is one of the strongest choices in Mauritius.
