970 Lonely Bay is the best small lodge for a honeymoon on the Coromandel Peninsula: four suites in a house set in native bush above Cooks Beach, with cooked breakfasts, deep baths and a short drive to Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach. It suits couples who want the peninsula's beaches and walks by day and a quiet, grown-up house to come back to at night, without the work of renting a beach home.
The Coromandel has no big resorts. That is part of its appeal. Most visitors rent holiday homes, which is lovely until someone has to shop, cook and clean. Here the lodge looks after breakfast and the rooms while you keep the freedom of a self-drive trip. The house sits next to the Shakespeare Scenic Reserve, Lonely Bay is a 10-minute walk away and the passenger ferry to Whitianga's restaurants leaves from a landing about 2 km down the road.
The lodge does not cater for children under 15, so the mood stays calm. With only four suites, you share the sitting room, library and garden with a handful of other guests at most.
Highlights at a glance
- Only four suites in a bush setting above Cooks Beach
- Cooked breakfasts and daily housekeeping
- Baths in every suite, one beneath bi-fold windows to the bush
- Ten-minute walk to Lonely Bay
- About 10 minutes by car to Hahei for Cathedral Cove
Why Couples Love 970 Lonely Bay
The setting does most of the work. The lodge sits among native trees on the headland between Cooks Beach and the Purangi Estuary, so mornings start with birdsong and evenings end with a glass of New Zealand wine on a balcony. Lonely Bay itself, a small cove below the Shakespeare Scenic Reserve, is one of the prettiest swimming spots on Mercury Bay and is a 10-minute walk from your door.
It also fixes the main problem with a Coromandel honeymoon. The peninsula is built around holiday rentals with minimum stays and self-catering. At 970 Lonely Bay you get the same privacy and space, but with a cooked breakfast, daily housekeeping and hosts who can point you to the right beach for the tide and weather.
Shared spaces feel like a well-furnished private home: a sitting and dining room, a library, several fireplaces, a Bang & Olufsen sound system and a deck that steps down to the lawn and garden.
Which Suite to Book
All four lodge suites have king or super king beds, an ensuite with a bath and separate shower, a minibar with a bottle of New Zealand wine plus a two-night minimum stay.
- Shakespeare Suite (about NZ$795): the most romantic pick for two. The bath sits beneath bi-fold windows that open to the bush. A private balcony faces the trees.
- Purangi Suite (about NZ$795): a super king bed, glimpses of the ocean and an east-facing balcony that catches morning light.
- Atrium Suite (about NZ$755): ground floor with its own entrance, a private solarium with an opening roof and a verandah. It is the easiest suite to reach and the best value.
- Estuary Terrace Suite (about NZ$1,395): two bedrooms with 270-degree views over the Purangi Estuary and Mercury Bay, a gas fireplace and a large terrace. Book it if you want the view at any price.
The Barn is a separate self-catering cottage, better for two couples.
Breakfast, Dinners and Eating Nearby
A cooked breakfast is listed for every lodge suite. The Estuary Terrace Suite rate states that it is included. Confirm what your rate covers when you book. Breakfast is the meal to linger over here, with coffee on the deck before you head out to the beaches.
The lodge has offered in-house extras such as picnic hampers and dinners in the past. Ask ahead rather than assume they are available on your dates. For most evenings, the better plan is the two-minute passenger ferry from Ferry Landing to Whitianga, where the waterfront has seafood restaurants, pubs and wine bars. Hahei, about 10 minutes away by car, has a café, a general store and a small brewery for a casual lunch after Cathedral Cove.
There is no spa on site. If you want a massage, ask your hosts about local therapists in Whitianga. Pack a bottle from a Coromandel or Waikato winery for sunset on your balcony instead.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do From the Lodge
You are well placed for the best of Mercury Bay.
- Cathedral Cove: drive about 10 minutes to Hahei, then walk the coastal track or take a boat or kayak tour. Track access has changed in recent years after storm damage, so check the Department of Conservation page before you go.
- Hot Water Beach: about 5 minutes beyond Cathedral Cove. Dig your own hot pool within two hours either side of low tide. The surf here has strong rips, so do not swim at this beach.
- Kayaking and boat trips: sea kayak tours from Hahei and boat trips to the sea caves and marine reserve.
- Walks: the Shakespeare Cliff lookout and Lonely Bay are on your doorstep, with longer bush walks inland.
- Whitianga: take the ferry over for dinner, fishing charters or a stroll along the marina.
It is easy to split the days: one of you snorkels the marine reserve while the other reads on Cooks Beach.
Getting There
Most couples arrive from Auckland Airport (AKL). The drive takes about 2.5 to 3 hours via the Kopu Bridge and the winding roads over the peninsula, so plan to arrive in daylight, especially after a long-haul flight. Overnighting in Auckland first is sensible if you land in the morning tired.
The lodge is at 970 Purangi Road, Cooks Beach. You need a car on the Coromandel: public transport is thin and the beaches are spread out. Roads are narrow and twisty. Some sections have been repaired after storms, so check the New Zealand Transport Agency site for closures before you set off. Drive on the left.
If you would rather not drive back to Auckland, many couples continue south to Rotorua or the Bay of Plenty, both within a few hours. Two to four nights at the lodge is the right length for the beaches, a boat trip and a couple of lazy days.
Is It Worth It?
Yes, if you want the Coromandel's beaches with someone else handling breakfast and the housekeeping. At roughly NZ$755 to NZ$795 a night for most suites (approximate; rates change), it costs more than a mid-range beach rental but far less than New Zealand's famous luxury lodges. The location near Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach is hard to beat.
Pick elsewhere if you want a full-service resort with a spa, a restaurant every night and a pool. This is a small house with four suites, not a hotel. Couples who prefer complete privacy and their own kitchen may be happier in a rented beach house at Kūaotunu or Ōpito Bay. Families with young children cannot stay, which is good news for honeymooners.
Book early for the New Zealand summer, from December to February, when both the lodge and The Barn can be reserved for exclusive use and suites become scarce. Shoulder months like March and November are quieter and often lovely.
Insider tips

- Check the tide tables and go to Hot Water Beach about two hours before low tide, ideally early in the morning.
- Leave the car at the lodge for dinner and take the two-minute ferry from Ferry Landing to Whitianga.
