Land in Nadi and rest for a night on Denarau Island, fly by seaplane to the Yasawa Islands for five nights of empty beaches, caves and manta rays, then finish with four nights at a kid-free resort in the sunny Mamanucas, close to the airport. It suits couples who want remote island time with Fijian warmth and little travel. May to October is the dry season and the best time to go.

Fiji works beautifully as a two-island honeymoon. The Yasawas, a chain of grassy volcanic islands northwest of Viti Levu, give you the remote version: empty beaches, village visits and caves to swim through. The Mamanucas, closer to Nadi, are sunnier and easier, with calm lagoons and some of Fiji's best kid-free resorts. Splitting your time gives you both.

The route starts with one night on Denarau Island, about 20 minutes from Nadi International Airport (NAN), so you can rest after the overnight flight from Los Angeles, about 10 to 11 hours. Then you fly by seaplane into the Yasawas for five nights before moving south to the Mamanucas for four. From there, the trip back to the airport is short.

Fiji's warmth is the other draw. Staff learn your names, you will hear "bula" all day and many resorts include a village visit and a kava ceremony. Pack light, since small planes and boats limit luggage.

Day by day

Day 1: Denarau Island

Fiji Airways flies nonstop from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Nadi International Airport (NAN), usually overnight, landing early in the morning. Transfer about 20 minutes to Denarau Island, a resort area with large hotels, spas, a golf course and Port Denarau Marina, where boats leave for the islands.

Ask your hotel for early check-in, or book the room from the night before so you can sleep as soon as you arrive. Spend the afternoon by the pool and book a massage to work the flight out of your back.

In the evening, walk to Port Denarau Marina for sunset drinks and dinner by the water. Denarau's beaches are not Fiji's best, with darker sand and murkier water, which is why one night is enough. If your flight lands very early and your seaplane can leave the same day, you can skip this night, but most couples are glad of the rest.

Days 2–6: Yasawa Islands

Fly by seaplane from Nadi to the Yasawa Islands, about 30 minutes over reefs and islets, or ride the catamaran from Port Denarau, which takes several hours to reach the northern islands. Turtle Island, an all-inclusive resort for a small number of couples on the lagoon made famous by The Blue Lagoon, is the splurge. Boutique resorts on other islands cost far less.

Spend day two settling in. On day three, take a boat to the Sawa-i-Lau caves, where you swim through a limestone chamber into a second, darker cave with a guide. From May to October, manta rays feed in the channel near Drawaqa Island. Resorts run snorkeling trips to see them.

On day four, visit a local village with your resort. Both of you should cover shoulders and knees and remove hats. A sulu, a wrap skirt worn by men and women, is often provided. Kava ceremonies are a warm welcome. Days five and six are for the beach: a private picnic, a kayak around the bay and early nights under a sky full of stars.

Days 7–10: Mamanuca Islands

Fly or sail south to the Mamanucas, usually by seaplane via Nadi or on the catamaran, which stops at several Mamanuca islands. Choose a kid-free resort: Likuliku Lagoon Resort on Malolo Island has Fiji's first overwater bures. Tokoriki Island Resort, in the outer Mamanucas, has beachfront bures with plunge pools and famous sunsets.

On day eight, book a private sandbar picnic, with a boat dropping you on a strip of white sand with lunch and a bottle of wine. In the afternoon, snorkel the house reef, which at most Mamanuca resorts starts a few strokes from the beach.

On day nine, take a day trip by boat to Monuriki, the uninhabited island where the film Cast Away was shot, or to Cloud 9, a floating bar and pizzeria on the reef. Divers can book a dive on one of the nearby reefs while a partner snorkels. Day ten is your slow day: a couples spa treatment, a long lunch and a final Fijian sunset.

Day 11: Flying Home

Transfer back to Nadi International Airport (NAN) by boat, seaplane or helicopter, depending on your resort. The Mamanucas are close to Nadi, so the transfer is usually under an hour. Check whether your transfer is timed around your flight, since boat schedules are fixed.

Flights to the US usually leave Nadi in the evening. If you have time to spare, book a day room on Denarau, visit the Sabeto mud pools and hot springs near Nadi or shop for handicrafts at the Nadi markets.

You cross the International Date Line on the way home, so you will land in the US on the same calendar day you leave Fiji, or even the day before. Many couples find the trip home easier than the outbound flight.

Getting Between Stops

Fiji Airways flies nonstop from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Nadi (NAN), about 10 to 11 hours. Denarau is about 20 minutes by car from the airport.

For the islands, you have two options. Seaplanes and small planes fly from Nadi to the Yasawas in about 30 minutes and to the Mamanucas in less, with views of the reefs on the way. A large catamaran runs daily from Port Denarau through the Mamanucas and up the Yasawa chain. It is cheaper but slower, with seas that can be rough.

Most couples book seaplane transfers through their resort, which handles timing and luggage. Seaplanes have strict baggage weight limits, so pack light, use soft bags and leave extra luggage at your Denarau hotel. Transfers depend on weather, so build in a buffer before your flight home.

Where to Stay

On Denarau, choose any of the large resorts with a pool and a spa. You are only there for one night, so convenience matters most.

In the Yasawas, Turtle Island is the top splurge, all inclusive and only for couples, on the Blue Lagoon. It costs well into four figures a night. Smaller boutique resorts on other Yasawa islands cost a few hundred dollars a night and still offer beautiful beaches and village visits.

In the Mamanucas, both of the kid-free resorts named here are excellent. Likuliku Lagoon Resort on Malolo Island has overwater bures, a rare thing in Fiji, along with a strong focus on Fijian culture. Tokoriki Island Resort has beachfront bures with plunge pools and sits in the outer Mamanucas, where sunsets over the ocean are famous.

When to Go

May to October is Fiji's dry season, with lower humidity, cooler nights, calm seas and sunny days. June to September is the busiest time, as Australians and New Zealanders escape their winter, so book resorts early. Manta rays feed in the Yasawas from about May to October.

April and November are good shoulder months, with warm weather and lower prices.

November to April is the wet season, with heavy rain, high humidity and the risk of cyclones, especially from January to March. Many couples still travel then for lower prices, but buy travel insurance and keep plans flexible. Dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses are present in Fiji, so use insect repellent. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before you book.

What It Costs

Fiji ranges from good value to very expensive. As an approximate guide, Denarau resorts cost about $200 to $450 a night for two. In the Yasawas, boutique resorts cost a few hundred dollars a night, while Turtle Island runs well into four figures with meals and activities included. In the Mamanucas, kid-free resorts like Tokoriki and Likuliku cost about $800 to $2,000 or more a night.

Meal plans are common because there are no restaurants outside the resorts on most islands. Check what is included before you book.

Add seaplane transfers, which are a big cost on their own, a cave trip, manta snorkeling, a sandbar picnic and a day trip to Cloud 9. The catamaran is cheaper than seaplanes if your budget is tight.

Tips for the Two of You

Fiji is relaxed but respectful. In villages, both of you should cover shoulders and knees, remove hats and avoid touching people's heads. Bring a small gift of kava root, called sevusevu, if you visit a village on your own. Your resort can help.

The tropical sun is strong, so use reef-safe sunscreen and wear rash shirts for snorkeling. Reef shoes protect your feet. Currents in reef channels can be strong, so snorkel with a guide outside the resort lagoon.

Both of you can follow your own interests. One partner might dive or surf at Cloudbreak, a famous reef break near Tavarua, while the other snorkels, reads or books a spa treatment. Many resorts offer cooking classes, weaving and kava ceremonies, so join one together.

Make It Shorter or Longer

With a week, skip one island group. Spend one night on Denarau and five or six in either the Yasawas or the Mamanucas. The Mamanucas are easier and sunnier; the Yasawas are more remote.

With two weeks, add three or four nights on the Coral Coast on Viti Levu for Sigatoka Sand Dunes, horseback rides on Natadola Beach and river trips to villages. Another option is Pacific Harbour and Beqa Lagoon for shark diving and rainforest.

For a bigger splurge, add Northern Fiji. Laucala Island, near Taveuni, is one of the most exclusive private-island resorts in the South Pacific. Kadavu, south of Viti Levu, is a quieter option known for diving on the Great Astrolabe Reef.

FAQ

Planning this trip

Is Fiji good for a honeymoon?

Yes. Fiji has clear lagoons, kid-free island resorts, excellent snorkeling and some of the warmest hospitality in the South Pacific. It is easier to reach from the West Coast than many couples expect, with nonstop flights of about 10 to 11 hours from Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Should we choose the Yasawas or the Mamanucas?

On a short trip, pick one: the Mamanucas are sunnier, closer to Nadi and easier to reach, while the Yasawas are more remote and dramatic. With 10 days or more, do both. Start with the Yasawas and finish in the Mamanucas, which makes the trip back to the airport short.

How do we get to the Yasawa Islands?

Most couples fly by seaplane from Nadi, about 30 minutes, which your resort can arrange. A daily catamaran from Port Denarau is cheaper but takes several hours. Seaplanes have strict baggage limits, so pack light and leave extra luggage at your Denarau hotel.

Are there overwater bungalows in Fiji?

A few. Likuliku Lagoon Resort in the Mamanucas has Fiji's first overwater bures. A small number of other resorts have added them. Most Fijian resorts focus on beachfront bures instead, often with plunge pools. For a wide choice of overwater stays, French Polynesia has more options.

What is the best time for a Fiji honeymoon?

May to October is best, with dry, sunny weather and calm seas. June to September is busiest. April and November are good shoulder months. The wet season, November to April, brings heat, rain and cyclone risk but lower prices, so buy travel insurance if you go then.
