At a glanceA long three-part honeymoon across southern Africa: four nights in Cape Town for the mountain, the coast and the Winelands, five in the Okavango Delta by mokoro, boat and open vehicle, then a hop through Johannesburg for five nights on an island in Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago. It suits couples who want a premium safari and a remote beach. Go from May to October, ideally September and October.
This route links three of southern Africa's most different places with short regional flights. Cape Town gives you a city with a mountain in the middle, a wine region on the doorstep and a long coastline to drive. The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a vast inland wetland where you glide through lily-covered channels in a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe, while elephants wade between islands. The Bazaruto Archipelago, off the coast of Mozambique, is a chain of islands with tall white dunes, clear water and dugongs grazing in the seagrass.
It is a premium trip. Botswana keeps visitor numbers low with high prices and small camps. The best Bazaruto lodges are among the most exclusive beach stays in Africa. In return, you get some of the most private wildlife viewing anywhere and an island finish that feels far from the rest of the world.
The pacing is simple: four nights, five nights, five nights, with one overnight in Johannesburg to make the connection painless.

Day by day
Days 1–5: Cape Town
Land at Cape Town International (CPT), usually via Johannesburg or a European hub. Stay at the Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa on the coast road below the mountains, or at Ellerman House in Bantry Bay for ocean views and a serious art collection.
Spend day 2 on Table Mountain and the V&A Waterfront. On day 3, drive Chapman's Peak to Cape Point and stop for the penguins at Boulders Beach. Day 4 is for wine: Franschhoek is about an hour away, with long lunches and tastings among mountains. From about July to November, you could instead drive to Hermanus, about an hour and a half east, to watch southern right whales from the cliffs.
The romantic moment is sunset from Table Mountain or Signal Hill, with the Atlantic turning gold and the city lights coming on below. Pack light before you leave: the delta flights limit you to soft bags of about 20 kg each.
Days 5–10: The Okavango Delta
Fly from Cape Town to Maun (MUB), nonstop on some days in about two hours or via Johannesburg. A light aircraft then takes you 20 to 60 minutes to your camp's airstrip, with the delta's channels shining below.
With five nights, consider splitting your time between two camps: one in a water area for mokoro and boat trips and one on drier land for game drives. Belmond Eagle Island Lodge sits in a lagoon area with water activities. Wilderness Vumbura Plains offers both water and land. Wilderness Mombo, on Chief's Island, is one of Africa's most famous camps for predators and rhino.
Days here follow the bush rhythm: early drives or boat trips, long lunches and siestas, then out again in the afternoon. Take a doors-off helicopter flight over the delta. The romantic moment is a night on a sleep-out deck under the stars, which many camps offer, with the calls of hippos and lions carrying across the water.
Days 10–11: Johannesburg
Fly from your camp to Maun, then on to Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International (JNB) in about an hour and a half. Flights to Vilankulo usually leave in the morning, so plan to spend the night at a hotel at or near the airport.
This is a practical night rather than a sightseeing stop. Use it to repack, wash your safari clothes and switch to beach gear. If you arrive early and have energy, the Apartheid Museum and the Maboneng district are both short drives from the city center, though most couples simply rest.
If your flights connect the same day, you can fly straight to Vilankulo and add a sixth night on the island instead. Ask your travel planner which option works for your dates, since regional schedules change by season.
Days 11–16: The Bazaruto Archipelago
Fly from Johannesburg to Vilankulo (VNX) in Mozambique in about an hour and a half, then take a helicopter of about 15 minutes or a boat of about an hour to your island.
Stay on Benguerra Island at &Beyond Benguerra Island, with beach casitas and plunge pools, or at Kisawa Sanctuary, a design-led retreat with large private residences. Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort on Bazaruto Island has beachfront villas with pools close to the dunes and freshwater lakes.
This is the slow stretch. Snorkel at Two Mile Reef, climb the dunes on Bazaruto for views over the sandbanks and take a boat out to look for dugongs, which still live in these waters. From about July to October, humpback whales pass the islands. Book a private sandbar picnic and a sunset dhow sail between the islands. On day 16, fly to Johannesburg for an evening nonstop home to Atlanta or Newark.
Getting Between Stops
Cape Town to Maun has nonstop flights on Airlink on some days, about two hours; otherwise, connect through Johannesburg. From Maun, light aircraft fly to camp airstrips in 20 to 60 minutes. Camp-to-camp transfers are also by small plane.
From Maun, fly to Johannesburg in about an hour and a half. Vilankulo flights from Johannesburg take about an hour and a half and usually leave in the morning, which is why this route includes a night at the airport.
Island lodges arrange the final transfer from Vilankulo by helicopter or boat. On the way home, fly from Vilankulo to Johannesburg and connect to Delta's nonstop to Atlanta or United's to Newark, both around 15 to 16 hours.
Luggage limits on light aircraft in Botswana are strict, usually around 20 kg each in soft bags including hand luggage. Leave extra bags at your Cape Town hotel if you can.
Where to Stay
Cape Town: The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa sits between the mountains and the sea. Ellerman House in Bantry Bay has ocean views and an art collection. The Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, is the classic in the Gardens.
Okavango Delta: Wilderness Mombo is the famous splurge on Chief's Island, with excellent predator and rhino viewing. Wilderness Vumbura Plains offers both land and water activities. Belmond Eagle Island Lodge focuses on the water, with mokoro and boat trips from its lagoon.
Bazaruto Archipelago: &Beyond Benguerra Island has beach casitas with plunge pools. Kisawa Sanctuary on Benguerra is a design-led retreat with very few large residences and prices to match. Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort has beachfront villas with pools on Bazaruto Island.

When to Go
The Okavango's floodwaters arrive from Angola in the dry winter and peak from about June to August, which is when mokoro trips are best and animals gather on the islands. The dry season runs from about May to October; September and October are hot, with excellent game viewing as water dries up.
Cape Town is best from about September to April. June to August is cool and rainy, though whale season starts in July. The Bazaruto Archipelago is driest and calmest from May to November, with humpback whales from about July to October.
September and October line up best: spring in Cape Town, peak dry season in the delta and calm water on the islands. From June to August, the delta is wettest and most scenic, but expect rain in Cape Town and cold nights on safari.
Budget and Booking
This is one of the most expensive routes on our site. Okavango camps run roughly $2,000–6,000 a night for two in high season, usually including meals, drinks, activities and park fees. Bazaruto lodges run about $1,200–2,500 a night for two at &Beyond and Anantara, with Kisawa much higher. Cape Town is good value at about $450–1,300 a night for two. All figures are approximate.
Light aircraft transfers in Botswana and helicopter transfers on Bazaruto are significant extras unless included.
Book delta camps nine to twelve months ahead for June to October, since they have very few tents. A specialist can coordinate the Botswana, South Africa and Mozambique legs. Mention your honeymoon; many camps add a private dinner or sleep-out night.
Make It Shorter or Longer
For 12 or 13 days, cut Cape Town to three nights and spend four nights each in the delta and on Bazaruto. Keep at least four nights in the delta, split between two camps if you can.
With 18 to 21 days, add three nights in Chobe National Park or at Victoria Falls after the delta for elephants on the river and the falls. Or add three nights in the Cape Winelands between Cape Town and the delta for Franschhoek's restaurants and a slower pace.
Couples who want a less expensive safari can swap one delta camp for two nights in the Makgadikgadi Pans for meerkats and salt flats, or choose Sabi Sand in South Africa instead of Botswana and save on light aircraft.
Honeymoon Tips
- The Okavango Delta and Mozambique are malaria areas. See a travel doctor well ahead. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
- Wear neutral colors on safari and pack a warm layer; winter mornings in Botswana can be close to freezing.
- Use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps after dark in Cape Town.
- On Bazaruto, swim with a guide on reefs with currents and respect marine park rules.
- Mozambique's far north has a separate security situation and is far from Bazaruto, but read the State Department advisories for South Africa, Botswana and Mozambique before you book.
FAQPlanning this trip
How do we get from Botswana to the Bazaruto Archipelago?
Fly from Maun to Johannesburg in about an hour and a half, then from Johannesburg to Vilankulo in about an hour and a half. Vilankulo flights usually leave in the morning, so most couples spend a night near Johannesburg airport. From Vilankulo, island lodges arrange a helicopter or boat transfer.
Is the Okavango Delta worth the price?
For many couples, yes. Botswana's high-cost, low-volume model means small camps, very few vehicles and access to mokoro trips, boat safaris and walks. Sharing a sighting with no one else is common. If the budget is tight, Sabi Sand in South Africa offers excellent game viewing at lower cost.
Which Bazaruto island should we choose?
Benguerra Island has the most exclusive lodges, including &Beyond Benguerra Island and Kisawa Sanctuary. Bazaruto Island has Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort, with tall dunes and freshwater lakes nearby. Both give access to the same reefs, sandbanks and dhow trips.
When is the best time for this honeymoon?
September and October are best overall: warm spring days in Cape Town, excellent dry-season game viewing in the delta and calm water on Bazaruto. June to August has the highest floods and most dramatic delta scenery, but Cape Town can be rainy.
How much does this honeymoon cost?
For 16 days at good camps and lodges, many couples spend roughly $20,000 to $50,000 for two including light aircraft, regional flights and island transfers, before international airfare. These are approximate figures. Choosing less famous delta camps and Anantara on Bazaruto keeps the total near the lower end.
