Getting Between Stops
Guatemala City airport to Antigua is about an hour by private transfer, more at rush hour. Book through your hotel before you land.
Antigua to Lake Atitlán is roughly two and a half hours by private car on mountain roads with sharp curves. Leave in the morning so you arrive well before dark. At the lake, boats do the work. Ask your lodge for a private boat with luggage.
The lake to Flores means driving about three hours back to Guatemala City, then flying about an hour on TAG or Avianca. Flying is far better than the long road north.
Flores back to Guatemala City is another flight of about an hour, followed by the drive to Antigua. Never travel by road at night here. All transfers should be private and arranged by your hotels.
Where to Stay
In Antigua, stay within six or eight blocks of the Parque Central. Casa Santo Domingo is the luxury choice. Hotel Convento Santa Catalina sits beside the famous arch. Small boutique hotels with ten to twenty rooms, a courtyard and a roof terrace are often more romantic than bigger properties.
At Lake Atitlán, avoid busy Panajachel and backpacker San Pedro. Casa Palopó in Santa Catarina Palopó is the small luxury pick, reachable by road. Laguna Lodge near Santa Cruz La Laguna is a boat-access eco-lodge with a nature reserve. Lodges in tiny Jaibalito are similar.
For Tikal, Flores has the most choice and the best sunsets. El Remate is quieter and closer to the park. Simple lodges at the park entrance, such as Jungle Lodge, give you the earliest start.
When to Go
November to April is the dry season and the time to go. December to March brings the clearest skies over Antigua and the lake, which matters since the volcano views are half the point. Tikal is most comfortable from December to March, when mornings can be pleasantly cool.
March and April are warmer and hazier, especially at the lake when farmers burn fields before planting. Tikal is driest but hottest in April and May.
Semana Santa, the week before Easter, turns Antigua into one of the most celebrated Holy Week settings in the Americas, with flower carpets and processions. Hotels fill a year ahead and prices soar.
May to October brings afternoon rain, green hills and lower prices. September and October are the wettest months.
Budget and Booking
Guatemala is good value. As an approximate guide, boutique hotels in Antigua run about $150 to $350 a night for two, with Casa Santo Domingo and the top properties higher. Lake lodges vary widely, roughly $150 to $500. Hotels in Flores are usually simpler and cheaper. All prices are approximate and climb sharply during Semana Santa and Christmas.
Book Antigua and your lake lodge first, then the domestic flights to Flores, which have limited daily departures. Ask each hotel to arrange the private transfer to the next stop.
Cash is essential at the lake, where boats and village shops rarely take cards. Withdraw quetzales from ATMs inside banks or hotels in Antigua during the day. Carry small notes for boats, guides and tips.
Staying Comfortable and Safe
The US State Department rates Guatemala at Level 3, reconsider travel, mainly for crime. Read the advisory, enroll in STEP and buy insurance with evacuation cover. Follow the basics: no road travel at night, private drivers arranged by your hotels, no solo hikes on volcanoes or lakeside trails and phones out of sight on the street.
Antigua and the lake sit at altitude, so evenings are cool. Pack a fleece for both of you. At Tikal, bring a hat, sunscreen, repellent and at least two liters of water each.
Mosquitoes in the Petén can carry dengue and Zika. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Guatemala.
The lake villages are traditional, so dress modestly away from your lodge and ask before photographing people.
Make It Shorter or Longer
For a 7-day trip, skip Tikal. Spend three nights in Antigua and three at the lake, then return to Antigua or straight to the airport for a midday flight.
For 13 to 14 days, continue from Tikal into Belize for a beach finale. The border at Melchor de Mencos is about two hours east of Flores. From there, Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker add three or four nights of reef and sea. Travel with a reputable agency and cross during the day.
Another option is to split the lake between two lodges on different shores for four or five nights, or to add Copán Ruinas in Honduras for a second Maya site. Keep the overland legs in daylight whatever you add.
