At a glanceOne night near Delhi's airport, one in Agra for sunrise at the Taj Mahal, three in Jaipur for Amber Fort and palace hotels, then four in Udaipur, where the hotels look across Lake Pichola to the City Palace. A train, a private car and a short flight link the stops. It suits couples who want India's romance with palace-level comfort. Go from October to March.
This is the classic India honeymoon, built for couples who want the Taj Mahal at sunrise and palace hotels without a punishing pace. It uses Rajasthan's greatest hits, the Golden Triangle cities of Agra and Jaipur, then slows down for four nights in Udaipur.
You land in Delhi and spend one night near the airport, then take an express train of under two hours to Agra. One night there is enough. You watch the Taj Mahal turn pink at first light, then continue west to Jaipur, stopping at the abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri.
Jaipur, the Pink City, gets three nights. Amber Fort, a sunrise balloon flight over the Aravalli hills and sunset drinks at Nahargarh Fort fill the days. At night you sleep in a former maharaja's palace.
Udaipur is the finale. Its lakes, white palaces and hotel boats make it the most romantic city in India. Four nights there let you take sunset boat rides on Lake Pichola, explore the City Palace and do nothing at all by a lakeside pool.

Day by day
Days 1–3: Delhi Arrival and Agra
Land at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (DEL). Many flights from the US arrive at night, so sleep at an airport hotel. On day 2, take an express train such as the Gatimaan Express from Hazrat Nizamuddin, under two hours, or drive about three and a half to four hours on the Yamuna Expressway.
In Agra, visit the red sandstone halls of Agra Fort in the afternoon. At sunset, watch the Taj Mahal from Mehtab Bagh across the river. Stay as close to the East Gate as possible. The Oberoi Amarvilas sits about a third of a mile from the Taj and every room looks toward it.
On day 3, enter the Taj Mahal at first light, when the marble turns from gray to pink and the gardens are quiet. Standing together in front of the world's most famous love letter in marble is the romantic moment of the trip. The Taj is closed to general visitors every Friday, so do not plan your Agra night for a Thursday. Drive on to Jaipur afterward, about four to five hours, stopping at Fatehpur Sikri on the way.
Days 3–5: Jaipur
Arrive in Jaipur by late afternoon on day 3. Check into a palace hotel such as Rambagh Palace, the former home of the Maharaja of Jaipur. Take a drink at the bar before dinner.
On day 4, reach Amber Fort right at opening time, before the heat and the crowds. In the afternoon, browse the block-print shops in the old bazaars. If one of you would rather rest, split up for an hour and meet for tea on the lawn. At sunset, drive up to Nahargarh Fort for drinks above the city. Watching Jaipur's lights come on from the old walls is the romantic moment of the Pink City.
On day 5, take a sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the Aravalli hills, landing among villages and fields. Spend the afternoon by the pool. A car and driver is the easiest way around, since sights are spread out and the old city is congested. Uber and Ola work well for short trips.
Days 6–9: Udaipur
Travel to Udaipur on day 6. The drive takes roughly six to seven hours with stops. Some couples prefer to fly, sometimes connecting through Delhi. Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR) is about 35 minutes from the old city. Your hotel boat will meet you at the jetty if you are staying on the lake.
On day 7, explore the City Palace courtyards in the morning. In the evening, take a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola. Gliding past the white palace walls as the sky turns orange is the romantic moment of Udaipur.
Day 8 is your splurge. Spend the night at Taj Lake Palace, an 18th-century summer palace in the middle of the lake reached only by the hotel's boat. Watch a folk dance evening at Bagore Ki Haveli beforehand. On day 9, take a day trip to Kumbhalgarh's great walls and the marble temple at Ranakpur, or drive up to the Monsoon Palace for the view and spend the rest of the day by the pool.
Day 10: Home via Delhi
Fly from Udaipur to Delhi, about an hour and a half. Connect home from there. Delhi has nonstop flights to several US cities. Many departures leave late at night, which suits a domestic connection in the afternoon. Leave plenty of time between flights, since domestic delays and security lines at Delhi can be long.
If your long-haul flight leaves in the early morning, book a room at an airport hotel for the evening rather than waiting in the terminal.
Pack textiles, block prints and jewelry from Jaipur in your checked bag. Keep receipts for larger purchases. If you bought anything shipped home from a shop, ask for written confirmation of the delivery details.
If you have a free afternoon in Delhi before a late flight, a driver can take you to Humayun's Tomb or the Lodhi Garden for a last walk. Both are calm by Delhi standards and far easier than the crowded old city on a travel day.
Getting Between Stops
Delhi to Agra is fastest by express train, under two hours from Hazrat Nizamuddin. Book well ahead through the official railway site or an agent. By car, the Yamuna Expressway makes the drive about three and a half to four hours.
Agra to Jaipur takes roughly four to five hours by road, including a stop at Fatehpur Sikri. Jaipur to Udaipur takes roughly six to seven hours by road with stops. Flights are faster when a schedule suits. Udaipur to Delhi is about an hour and a half by air.
Hire a private car and driver for the Agra to Jaipur leg and for sightseeing in Jaipur. Many couples keep the same driver all the way to Udaipur. In Udaipur, the old city is walkable but hilly. Lakeside hotels run their own boats to the city jetties. Auto rickshaws handle short trips; agree on the fare first.
Where to Stay
In Agra, The Oberoi Amarvilas is the hotel to book if your budget allows, with Taj views from every room. ITC Mughal is a large resort with gardens and a well-known spa.
In Jaipur, Rambagh Palace, the former home of the Maharaja of Jaipur and now run by Taj, sits in large gardens south of the old city. Samode Haveli is a smaller option inside the walled city with painted rooms and a courtyard pool. The Oberoi Rajvilas is a low-rise resort with private villas on the eastern edge of town.
In Udaipur, Taj Lake Palace floats in the middle of Lake Pichola. The Oberoi Udaivilas and The Leela Palace Udaipur sit on the western shore with gardens, pools and views back to the City Palace. Heritage havelis along Lal Ghat and Gangaur Ghat are cheaper, with the same rooftop views.

When to Go
October to March is the season. February, March and October usually give the clearest views of the Taj. December and January mornings in Agra are often foggy, which can hide the Taj until mid-morning. Pollution can be bad around Delhi and Agra in November. November to February brings clear skies and highs in the 70s Fahrenheit in Jaipur and Udaipur, with cool mornings.
Diwali in October or November lights up the bazaars and lakes, but rooms book out fast. Holi in early spring is celebrated with color everywhere.
April to June is extremely hot, often above 100°F. July to September brings monsoon rain. Udaipur is green and romantic then, but Agra and Jaipur are humid. The Jaipur Literature Festival in late January fills hotels, so book early if your dates overlap.
Budget and Booking
Plan on roughly $300–900 a night for two in good heritage and palace hotels. Rambagh Palace, The Oberoi Amarvilas, Taj Lake Palace and the big Udaipur lakeside hotels sit at the top and climb around Diwali and the winter holidays. Heritage havelis cost far less. All figures are approximate.
Book your Udaipur lake-view room first and ask for the view in writing. Then book Agra, choosing a night that is not Thursday. Book the train tickets as soon as they open.
Other costs include a car and driver, Taj Mahal and fort tickets, a balloon flight, guides, boat rides and the domestic flight home. Food is excellent value, from street snacks to long palace dinners.
Make It Shorter or Longer
For a week, skip the Delhi night if you arrive in the morning and go straight to Agra. Then spend two nights in Jaipur and three in Udaipur.
With two weeks, add Jodhpur between Jaipur and Udaipur, with its blue old town below a vast hilltop fort. Many couples drive from Jodhpur to Udaipur by way of Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh. Or add two nights at Ranthambore, about three to three and a half hours from Jaipur, for a tiger safari.
Couples who want a beach finale can fly south to Goa or to Kerala. Kerala's backwaters, with a night on a houseboat, make a slow, green contrast with Rajasthan's deserts and palaces.
Honeymoon Tips
Dress modestly for both of you, with shoulders and knees covered, especially at temples, mosques and the Taj Mahal. A light scarf is useful. Remove shoes where asked.
The Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors on Fridays. The marble burns bare feet in the hot months, so visit at dawn.
Drink bottled or filtered water and choose busy food stalls with high turnover. Carry hand sanitizer.
Traffic is heavy. Use a private driver rather than driving yourselves. Agree on rickshaw fares first. Dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses occur in India, so use repellent. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for India before booking. Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website before you book.
FAQPlanning this trip
Is one night in Agra enough?
Yes. One night gives you sunset from Mehtab Bagh, a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal and time for Agra Fort. Agra itself is busy and not especially romantic beyond the Taj, so most couples move on to Jaipur after breakfast. Avoid a Thursday night, since the Taj closes on Fridays.
Which Udaipur hotel is best for a honeymoon?
Taj Lake Palace is the most romantic, floating in Lake Pichola and reached only by boat. The Oberoi Udaivilas and The Leela Palace Udaipur offer more space, gardens and pools with views of the City Palace. Many couples stay at one of the shore hotels and splurge on a single night at the Lake Palace.
Should we take the train to Agra?
Yes, if you can get tickets. Express trains such as the Gatimaan Express take under two hours from Hazrat Nizamuddin, faster than the three and a half to four hour drive. Book well in advance through the official railway site or an agent. Use a car and driver after Agra.
Is India safe for a honeymoon?
Most couples have a smooth trip on this route, especially with a private driver and good hotels. Expect crowds, touts and heavy traffic. Use registered drivers, agree on fares in advance and keep valuables close in markets. Check the State Department advisory for India before you travel.
When is the best time to see the Taj Mahal?
At sunrise on a weekday from October to March. February, March and October usually have the clearest skies. December and January bring morning fog that can hide the dome until mid-morning. Weekends and Indian public holidays draw huge domestic crowds.
