Rambagh Palace is the Jaipur hotel to book if you want to sleep in a real royal palace rather than a palace-themed resort. First built in 1835, it grew over the following century into the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur and has been a hotel since 1957, now run by Taj. The gardens are big enough that the traffic of India's busiest tourist city fades to nothing once you are through the gates.

There are 78 rooms and suites, five places to eat and drink and a spa. Peacocks wander the lawns, a band sometimes plays on the terrace and afternoon tea on the verandah is a ritual in its own right. Dinner at Suvarna Mahal, in the former banquet hall, is one of the grandest dining rooms in the country.

Booking sites list entry rooms from roughly $840 a night in shoulder season, approximate and higher from November to February. It suits couples who want one or two nights of real old-world grandeur in the middle of a Rajasthan trip. Couples on a tighter budget can get a taste of it with dinner or a drink at the Polo Bar while staying somewhere cheaper.

Highlights at a glance

  • A former residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur, built from 1835
  • 78 rooms and suites, including historical royal suites
  • Suvarna Mahal dining in the gilded former banquet hall
  • Steam, a bar inside a restored train carriage
  • Mughal gardens, peacocks and indoor and outdoor pools

Why Couples Love Rambagh Palace

Rambagh works because it still feels lived in. The corridors are lined with portraits and polo trophies, the marble floors are cool underfoot and the staff move with the quiet ease of people who have done this for generations. Arriving is part of the show: the drive curves through the gardens to a porch where you are greeted with flower garlands.

The grounds matter as much as the rooms. There are Mughal gardens with fountains, a jogging track and plenty of shaded benches. After a morning in the crowds at Amber Fort or the City Palace, coming back here for a swim and a long lunch on the verandah feels like stepping out of the city entirely. Ask for the complimentary heritage walk on your first afternoon to learn the palace's story.

Rooms and Suites to Book

Rambagh has 45 rooms and 33 suites. The entry Palace Rooms are elegant and generously sized, with period furniture, but many face inward or over smaller courtyards. For a honeymoon, the step up to a suite is where the palace experience really lands: higher ceilings, separate sitting rooms and, in the best ones, views over the gardens.

The historical and royal suites were once used by the royal family and their guests and each is decorated differently. They are expensive, but for one special night they deliver the sense of occasion most couples come for.

Whatever you book, ask for a garden-facing room in writing and mention that you are on honeymoon. The Taj team often marks the occasion with flowers or a cake. Suite offers sometimes appear on the official site, so check there before booking elsewhere.

Food, Drink and the Spa

Suvarna Mahal is the set piece: Indian royal cuisine served under gilded ceilings and chandeliers in the palace's 18th-century-style banquet hall. Book it for one dinner and dress up a little.

For something lighter, the Verandah Cafe is the place for breakfast and afternoon tea overlooking the lawns, while the Rajput Room serves an international menu. Steam is a lounge bar set in a restored steam train carriage, with Mediterranean food and cocktails. The Polo Bar, with its trophies and old photographs, is the classic spot for a drink before dinner.

The J Wellness Circle spa offers traditional Indian therapies and there are indoor, outdoor and heated pools, a fitness center and yoga sessions. A morning yoga class on the lawn followed by a long spa treatment is a good antidote to sightseeing.

Things to Do in Jaipur

Jaipur rewards an early start. Go to Amber Fort at opening time, before the heat and the tour buses, then continue to the City Palace and the Jantar Mantar observatory. Hawa Mahal is best photographed in the morning light from the cafes opposite.

The concierge can arrange guided excursions and the hotel offers a blue pottery workshop itinerary in Sanganer for couples who like making something together. Shopping for block-printed textiles, jewelry and carpets is a serious pastime here; agree on a budget first and ask the hotel to recommend reputable shops.

For something quieter, a sunset at Nahargarh Fort gives you the whole city spread out below. If one of you loves history and the other loves design, Jaipur keeps both busy. Plan two full days at minimum and three to slow down.

Getting There

Jaipur International Airport (JAI) is about 30 minutes from Rambagh Palace by car, depending on traffic. Domestic flights connect with Delhi, Mumbai and other Indian cities and the hotel can arrange a car to meet you.

Many couples arrive by road or rail as part of the Golden Triangle with Delhi and Agra. The drive from Delhi takes roughly five to six hours on the expressway and fast trains also link the two cities. From Jaipur, Udaipur is about an hour's flight or a long day's drive, which makes Rambagh a natural stop on a Rajasthan honeymoon.

Taxis and app-based rides are easy to find in Jaipur, but having the hotel book a car for sightseeing days saves haggling and lets you keep shopping in the trunk.

Good to Know

The best months are roughly October to March, when days are warm and evenings cool enough for the terrace. December and January nights can be chilly, so pack a layer. April to June is very hot and the monsoon follows from about July to September.

At temples and religious sites, both partners should cover shoulders and knees and you will remove shoes. A light scarf is handy for either of you.

Mosquitoes are present, particularly after the rains and dengue occurs in Rajasthan. Use repellent in the evenings; if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.

Street food is tempting, but stick to busy stalls with high turnover and drink bottled or filtered water. The hotel's own kitchens are a safe way to try Rajasthani dishes such as laal maas and dal baati churma.

Is It Worth It?

If you want one night of real palace grandeur in India, Rambagh is among the best places to spend it. The history is genuine, the gardens are lovely and the service has the polish you expect from Taj's flagship palaces. Compared with a top palace hotel in Europe, the price is reasonable for what you get.

It is still expensive by Indian standards and the entry rooms do not always deliver the views or scale the name suggests. Couples who want privacy and a private pool may prefer The Oberoi Rajvilas, a low-rise resort on the edge of town. Couples who want intimacy inside the old city might like Samode Haveli instead.

The best compromise is two nights in a suite rather than four in an entry room. You will remember the suite.

Insider tips

  1. Ask for a garden-facing room or suite in writing when you book.
  2. Reserve Suvarna Mahal for your first night so you can return if you love it.
  3. Join the heritage walk on arrival; it makes the rest of the stay richer.
  4. Book a hotel car for Amber Fort at opening time to beat the crowds and heat.

FAQ

Rambagh Palace questions, answered

How much does Rambagh Palace cost per night?

Booking sites show entry rooms from roughly $840 a night for two in shoulder season, before taxes. Suites cost considerably more and peak months from November to February push rates higher. Prices are approximate and change by date, so compare the official Taj site, which sometimes runs suite and breakfast-inclusive offers, with booking sites.

Is Rambagh Palace a real palace?

Yes. It was first built in 1835 and later became the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur before opening as a hotel in 1957. Taj now runs it. The building, gardens, portraits and polo memorabilia are original to its royal past, which is what sets it apart from newer palace-style resorts.

How far is Rambagh Palace from the airport and the Pink City?

Jaipur International Airport (JAI) is about 30 minutes away by car depending on traffic. The walled Pink City and Hawa Mahal are a short drive north and Amber Fort is around 30 to 45 minutes away. The hotel can arrange cars for transfers and sightseeing.

What should we wear at Rambagh Palace?

Smart casual works for most of the hotel. For dinner at Suvarna Mahal, both partners will feel more comfortable dressed up a little: trousers or a dress rather than shorts. When sightseeing at temples, cover shoulders and knees and expect to remove your shoes. A light scarf is useful for either partner.

How many nights should we spend at Rambagh Palace?

Two nights suits most couples. That gives you one full day for Amber Fort, the City Palace and the bazaars, plus time to enjoy the gardens, spa and Suvarna Mahal. Add a third night if you want a slower pace or plan a day trip, such as Samode or a pottery workshop in Sanganer.
