Mezzatorre Hotel & Thermal Spa is the most romantic hotel on Ischia and the best pick for couples who want the Bay of Naples with a thermal spa attached. It sits on a rocky headland on the island's northwest coast, near Lacco Ameno, inside a seven-hectare park of pines and Mediterranean scrub. At its center is a 16th-century watchtower that was never finished, which is where the name, meaning half-tower, comes from.

There are 48 rooms and suites, some in the tower and others in cottages spread through the park. The spa uses thermal water from the hotel's own spring, which emerges at 45°C and feeds three hydrotherapy pools. Down at sea level, a beach club with a saltwater pool, daybeds and striped umbrellas faces the water. Since 2019 the hotel has been managed by Pellicano Hotels, the group behind Il Pellicano in Tuscany and the Michelin Guide awards it one Key.

It suits couples who want long, slow days split between warm pools, sea swims and seafood lunches, with sunsets over San Montano Bay. It suits less well if you want to walk to restaurants and bars, since the hotel is secluded and most outings need a taxi.

Highlights at a glance

  • 16th-century watchtower at the heart of the hotel
  • Three thermal pools fed by a private 45°C spring
  • Sea-level beach club with saltwater pool
  • Seven-hectare park above San Montano Bay
  • One Michelin Key

Why Couples Love Mezzatorre

The setting feels like a private estate. You arrive through woods, the tower appears above the trees and the sea opens out on every side. Most rooms and all suites have a terrace or balcony facing the water and the west-facing position delivers long sunsets over San Montano Bay.

The history adds character. An Aragonese family began the tower between the 16th and 17th centuries, the dukes of Rancidello enlarged it and in the 1930s it became a pension. Later the poet and politician Luigi Patalano made it a gathering place for writers and the villa he built in the park was owned in the 1950s by the film director Luchino Visconti.

Today the style is relaxed Italian glamour shaped by Marie-Louise Sciò of Pellicano Hotels: striped umbrellas, crisp linen, good music and an easy, unhurried mood.

Rooms and Suites to Book

Rooms are split between the old tower and cottages across the park. Classic Rooms have a partial sea or garden view, Superior Rooms add sea views and small terraces or balconies and Deluxe Rooms look over San Montano Bay. Junior Suites in the tower overlook the private bay and pool, while Deluxe Suites add a separate living room.

For a honeymoon, book a tower room. The Bellevue Suite sits on one of the upper floors with a terrace, sun loungers and views across the bay and gulf. The Grand Suite, about 80 square meters with a large terrace, is the showpiece of the property.

If you prefer a little more independence, a cottage room surrounded by pines can feel more private, though views vary. Ask the hotel which cottage rooms face the sea before you commit.

Food, Drink and the Thermal Spa

Ristorante La Torre serves a seasonal tasting menu by chef Giuseppe D'Abundo, an Ischia native who has cooked here since the hotel opened. His dishes reinterpret island classics, including local snapper, rockfish and Ischia-style rabbit. Ristorante & Bar La Baia, under a giant palm-frond canopy by the sea, is the casual option for raw fish and pasta with mussels and zucchini flowers. Bar La Torre serves the house spritz at sunset.

The spa is the reason many couples choose Ischia. Three hydrotherapy pools use thermal water from the hotel's private spring at 45°C and treatments include thermal mud made from that water and volcanic clay. There are treatment cabins, massage rooms and medical staff for wellness programs. Book a couples' massage early, since slots fill in July and August.

Things to Do

Spend at least one afternoon at a big thermal park. Poseidon Gardens, near Forio, has more than a dozen pools at different temperatures stepping down to the sea. Negombo, on San Montano Bay itself, is set in gardens next to the beach. On the south coast, Sorgeto is a rocky cove where hot water bubbles into the sea, best at night with a bottle of wine.

The Aragonese Castle near Ischia Ponte is worth a morning and the hike up Monte Epomeo, the island's highest point, rewards you with views over the whole gulf. Sant'Angelo, a car-free fishing village, is lovely for dinner.

The hotel can arrange boat trips to Procida, a pastel-colored island next door and to Capri for the day. On site you can rent paddleboards and snorkeling gear or play tennis.

Getting There

Fly into Naples International (NAP) and take a taxi of about 20 minutes to the port. Fast ferries from Naples reach Ischia in about 45 to 60 minutes, docking at Ischia Porto, Casamicciola or Forio depending on the operator. A private boat transfer from Naples or Capri is a more relaxed alternative.

From the port, the hotel is a short drive along the north coast. The hotel offers a shuttle from the ferry, with a fee each way, so book it in advance.

You do not need a car. Taxis and micro-taxis are easy to find and the hotel can book drivers for outings. Ischia's roads are narrow and busy in August, so a driver usually beats renting. Ferries can be affected by rough seas, so leave a buffer before onward flights.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want a spa honeymoon on the Italian coast, it is one of the best options in the country. You get a historic tower, a private thermal spring, sea swimming and a strong kitchen, usually for less than comparable hotels on Capri or the Amalfi Coast. Pellicano's style keeps it feeling like an Italian summer rather than a medical spa.

It is less suited to couples who want to walk out to bars or a lively town at night. Forio and Lacco Ameno are a short taxi ride away, but the hotel is designed for staying put.

Mezzatorre is open seasonally, from roughly April through October. May, June and September bring warm water, open thermal parks and fewer crowds than August.

Where is Mezzatorre on Ischia?

Mezzatorre is at Via Mezzatorre 23 in the comune of Forio, on a rocky headland near Lacco Ameno on Ischia's northwest coast. It overlooks San Montano Bay. The Negombo thermal park is nearby and the village centers of Lacco Ameno and Forio are a short taxi ride away.

Does Mezzatorre have its own thermal pools?

Yes. The spa has three hydrotherapy pools fed by the hotel's own spring, with thermal water emerging at 45°C. Treatments use the mineral-rich water and a mud made from thermal water and volcanic clay. There is also a saltwater pool at the beach club by the sea.

Which rooms are best for a honeymoon at Mezzatorre?

Choose a room in the 16th-century tower. The Bellevue Suite on an upper floor has a terrace and gulf views and the Grand Suite, around 80 square meters, is the most impressive. Junior Suites in the tower also overlook the private bay and pool.

When is Mezzatorre open?

The hotel is seasonal and generally opens from April through October. Late spring and September are the best months for a honeymoon, with warm sea, thermal parks open and fewer visitors than in August. Check the official site for the exact dates in your year.

How do we get from Naples to Mezzatorre?

Take a taxi from Naples International (NAP) to the port, about 20 minutes, then a fast ferry to Ischia, around 45 to 60 minutes. The hotel runs a paid shuttle from the ferry. A private boat transfer is more expensive but avoids busy summer ferries.
