Auberge du Père Bise is the classic romantic splurge on Lake Annecy: a historic lakeside inn in Talloires with 22 rooms and suites, a spa with a panoramic pool and the two-Michelin-star restaurant of Savoyard chef Jean Sulpice. If your idea of a honeymoon involves a long tasting dinner followed by a short walk upstairs, this is the place.
The inn sits right on the water at the little Talloires harbor, on the sunset side of the lake. Mornings bring boats and swimmers setting off from the docks and evenings bring the light fading over the mountains across the water. Jean Sulpice took over the house in 2016 and has held two stars here since 2018, along with a Michelin green star for sustainable practice.
It suits couples who care about food and setting and want a slow few days rather than a busy itinerary. Swimming, cycling the lake path and boat trips fill the days. Note that the inn closes for a long winter break, roughly from early November to early February, so plan a spring, summer or early autumn visit.

Why Couples Love Père Bise
It combines the two things Lake Annecy does best: water and food. The lake here is clear enough to swim in from wooden docks and the inn's terrace looks straight over it. Talloires is quieter than Annecy town, a village of stone houses and a former abbey rather than crowds and souvenir shops.
Then there is dinner. Jean Sulpice cooks with a strong sense of place, drawing on mountain herbs, lake fish and alpine produce. A tasting menu here is the kind of meal couples talk about years later. Staying overnight means you can take your time with the wine pairing and not worry about the drive home.
Rooms and Suites to Book
The 22 rooms and suites are split between the main house and a garden house. Decor mixes classic French comfort with lighter, modern touches.
For a honeymoon, pay for a lake view. The whole point of Talloires is the water and the mountains opposite and a room that faces the parking area or the village is a different experience. Suites with a balcony or terrace over the lake are worth the extra for sunset drinks. Ask when booking which rooms face west over the water. Because the inn is small and the restaurant draws diners from far away, summer weekends sell out early.
Food, Drink and the Spa
The two-Michelin-star Restaurant Jean Sulpice is the heart of the house. Menus change with the seasons and lean on Savoyard ingredients and service is formal but warm. Book your dinner when you book the room; tables are limited.
The spa is compact but well designed. It has three treatment cabins, a 13-meter panoramic pool looking over the lake, a hammam, a sauna, a sensory shower, a cold bath and an outdoor Nordic bath with lake views. A couples treatment followed by an evening soak in the Nordic bath is a lovely way to recover from a day of cycling or hiking. Breakfast on the terrace by the water is a daily highlight.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do
The lake sets the agenda.
- Swim from the Talloires docks or the nearby public beach.
- Rent an electric boat or paddleboards and explore the shoreline.
- Cycle the flat lakeside path from the western shore toward Annecy.
- Take the lake ferry into Annecy's old town for canals and markets.
- Hike up to the Col de la Forclaz for views over the whole lake, where paragliders launch.
One of you can try a tandem paraglide while the other watches from the terrace. Mountain weather changes quickly, so carry a layer on hikes even in summer.
Getting There
Geneva Airport (GVA) is about an hour away by car and has nonstop flights from several US cities. You can also take the train from Paris to Annecy, about three and a half to four hours, then a taxi to Talloires, around 25 minutes along the lake.
A rental car helps for day trips to Chamonix or the Aravis villages, but you can manage without one by using lake boats, buses and bikes. Book a taxi back after dinner in Annecy, as buses thin out in the evening. The inn closes for its annual winter break, roughly from early November to early February.
Is It Worth It?
For food-loving couples, yes. A lake-view room plus a dinner at Jean Sulpice is one of the great romantic evenings in the French Alps and the spa adds a reason to stay more than one night.
It is expensive, especially once you add the tasting menu and wine. Couples who are less interested in fine dining might get better value at a lakeside hotel in Annecy town or Les Trésoms on the hillside. Light sleepers should know that the harbor can be lively on summer days. But for a celebration with an exceptional meal on the water, few places in France compete.
Insider tips
- Book dinner at the restaurant when you book your room.
- Ask for a west-facing lake-view room for sunsets.
- Take the lake boat into Annecy so neither of you has to drive.
- Visit in June or September for warm water and fewer crowds.
