The short answer

Roatán suits couples who want reef time without much fuss. The Mesoamerican Reef runs close to shore, so you can snorkel straight off West Bay beach, dive the north-side walls and be in the water the afternoon you land on a nonstop from Atlanta, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth or Miami. February to June brings the clearest, calmest water. Prices generally run below better-known Caribbean islands. Honduras carries a Level 3 advisory, mostly reflecting the mainland. Don't miss a sunset catamaran sail.

Best for
  • Snorkelers and couples learning to dive
  • Value-minded Caribbean beach lovers
  • Short nonstop flights from the South
Maybe skip it if
  • You want glossy, polished luxury
  • Cruise ship crowds would bother you

Roatán is the largest of Honduras's Bay Islands, a thin green ridge about 48 miles long sitting on the southern end of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The reef runs close to shore here, so on much of the island you can wade in from the sand and be over coral within minutes. Off the north side, walls drop toward the deep Cayman Trench, which is why divers have been coming for decades.

For couples, the island has a bit of everything: the soft beach at West Bay, the bars and dive shops of West End, quiet villas on the east end and a Caribbean culture shaped by British, Cayman Islands and Garífuna roots. It also has nonstop flights from Atlanta, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami.

Honduras is under a Level 3 State Department advisory for crime and terrorism, which mainly reflects gang violence on the mainland. Roatán sees mostly theft and occasional robberies. Flying straight in, staying in established areas and using hotel-arranged transport keeps most risk low.

Why Honeymoon on Roatán

Roatán is one of the most accessible reef islands in the western Caribbean. The flight is short. You can be snorkeling over coral the same afternoon you land. The Roatán Marine Park has worked since 2005 to protect the reef. You can see turtles, eagle rays and schools of reef fish without a long boat ride.

It also works on land. West Bay has a long stretch of pale sand with calm, clear water. West End offers casual restaurants and sunset bars along a sandy main road. The east end is quieter, with mangrove channels, small fishing villages and boutique lodges.

Prices are generally lower than better-known Caribbean islands. The island is not glossy and roads can be rough. Still, the mix of reef, beach and easygoing island life suits couples who want water time without much fuss.

When to Go

Roatán is warm all year, with sea temperatures suited to swimming in every month. The best weather usually runs from February to June, when skies are mostly clear, rain is light and the water is calm and clear for snorkeling. March through May is peak season for divers.

July to September is hot and humid but often still good, with occasional storms. Hurricane season runs June to November. The risk is highest around September and October.

The rainiest period is usually October to January, when northerly winds called nortes can bring several days of rain and rough seas, especially on the north side. Some dive sites close temporarily when it is windy.

Cruise ships call at the island on many days, especially in winter. On those days West Bay and popular attractions get crowded, so check the cruise calendar and plan quiet beach time for other days.

Where to Stay

West Bay is the island's best beach and has the largest concentration of resorts and condo hotels, all within walking distance of the sand. The Kimpton Grand Roatán and Infinity Bay are well-known options here. It is the easiest choice for first-time visitors, though it gets busy on cruise ship days.

West End, a short water taxi ride away, is more village than resort. Small hotels, dive lodges and guesthouses sit along the main road and waterfront, with restaurants and bars within a few minutes' walk. It suits couples who want evening atmosphere.

For privacy, look at boutique resorts and villas on the north shore and the east end, around areas such as Camp Bay, Paya Bay or Milton Bight. These are more remote and quiet, often with private docks and kayaks. You will need a car or a driver to get around, so factor in transfer times.

Romantic Things to Do

Snorkel straight off the beach at West Bay, where the reef starts close to shore and the water is usually calm. For more variety, take a boat trip to sites along the north side.

If you dive, Roatán has walls, wrecks and coral gardens for all levels. Learn together with an introductory dive or complete a full certification course over a few days.

Take a boat through the mangrove channels at Oak Ridge on the south coast, where wooden houses on stilts line the water. Further east, the small Pigeon Cays make an easy picnic and swim stop.

Visit Punta Gorda, the oldest Garífuna community on the island, to hear drumming and see punta dancing. In the evening, book a sunset sail or catamaran cruise and end with dinner at a beachfront restaurant in West End.

Getting There and Around

Fly nonstop to Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB) from Atlanta, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth or Miami, with seasonal service from some other cities. Flights take about two to three hours. The airport is 15 to 25 minutes by car from West End and West Bay and farther from the east end.

Ferries connect Roatán with La Ceiba on the mainland and Utila. Small planes fly between the Bay Islands.

On the island, taxis are available, but agree on the fare before getting in. Some are shared colectivos that pick up other passengers, so request a private ride if you prefer. Water taxis run between West End and West Bay in a few minutes and are the most pleasant way to travel.

Renting a car gives you freedom to explore the east end, but roads can be narrow and potholed. Avoid driving at night.

Food and Drink

Seafood dominates. Look for grilled or fried fish, shrimp, conch and lobster in season. Ordering lionfish, an invasive species that harms the reef, helps local conservation efforts. Coconut bread is a Bay Islands specialty and goes well with breakfast.

Try a baleada, the classic Honduran snack of a thick flour tortilla folded around beans, cheese and cream, often with eggs or meat. For something richer, Garífuna tapado is a seafood stew made with coconut milk and plantains.

West End and West Bay have a wide range of restaurants, from beach shacks to fine dining. Many offer sunset happy hours. Local beers like Salva Vida and Port Royal are everywhere, along with rum cocktails.

Water in many hotels is filtered, but most visitors drink bottled water to be safe. Ask your hotel.

Honeymoon Tips

Check the cruise ship schedule before planning beach days. West Bay gets crowded when several ships are in port, while the east end stays quiet.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen and never stand on or touch coral. The marine park charges a small fee or encourages donations, which help protect the reef.

Sandflies can be a nuisance on some beaches, especially at dawn and dusk. Use repellent and cover ankles. Mosquitoes can carry dengue; if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Honduras.

US dollars are widely accepted, but you may get change in lempiras. Cards work at most hotels and larger restaurants. Keep some small bills for taxis and tips.

For safety, use taxis arranged by your hotel or restaurant at night, keep valuables out of sight and avoid walking on dark, isolated roads. If you plan to visit the mainland, travel by day with a private transfer.

FAQ

Roatán honeymoon FAQ

Is Roatán safe for a honeymoon?

Honduras is rated Level 3 by the US State Department, but most of the serious crime is on the mainland. Roatán has petty theft and occasional robberies, so use hotel-arranged taxis at night, keep valuables out of sight and avoid isolated roads after dark. Flying nonstop to Roatán means you do not need to travel through mainland cities.

Is West Bay or West End better for couples?

West Bay has the best beach and most resorts, with calm water and snorkeling off the sand, but it gets busy on cruise ship days. West End is more of a village, with small hotels, dive shops and restaurants. Many couples stay in West Bay and take a water taxi to West End for dinner.

Do we need to dive to enjoy Roatán?

No. The reef starts close to shore in many places, so snorkeling is easy and rewarding, especially at West Bay. Boat trips to snorkeling sites, kayaking, beach days and island tours fill the time well. That said, Roatán is a great place to try diving or get certified together.

When is hurricane season on Roatán?

Hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk in September and October. Direct hits are not common, but storms can bring heavy rain and rough seas. The rainiest months overall are usually October to January. Travel insurance is a good idea if you travel in these months.

What currency should we use on Roatán?

US dollars are widely accepted on Roatán. Many prices are listed in dollars. You may receive change in lempiras, the Honduran currency. Credit cards work at most hotels and larger restaurants, but carry small bills for taxis, tips and small shops. ATMs are available in main towns.
