Why Honeymoon on Sea Lion Island
It is rare to have a whole island of wildlife almost to yourselves. With only a couple of dozen guests at most, you can walk for hours and meet no one but penguins. The island is compact enough to explore on foot, so there are no long drives or crowded boats.
The variety is extraordinary for such a small place. In one day you can watch gentoos waddle to the surf, see rockhoppers hop up the rocks, sit near a beach of elephant seals and scan the kelp for orcas. Caracaras, known locally as Johnny rooks, are bold and curious and may inspect your bag.
The lodge gives you warmth, good meals and a bar at the end of the day. Picture long summer evenings with soft light over the tussac grass. Couples who love photography and quiet tend to call it the highlight of a Falklands trip.
When to Go
The visitor season runs from about October to March. The lodge typically opens only during that window.
October and November are excellent for elephant seals. Bulls guard harems and pups are born on the beaches. Orcas often hunt close to shore during this period. Penguins arrive and settle on nests.
December and January are peak months, with penguin chicks, long daylight and the warmest weather. Expect temperatures roughly between 8°C and 20°C (46°F and 68°F), with strong wind on many days.
February and March bring growing chicks and molting penguins, which stay ashore for weeks. Lodges are often quieter as the season winds down.
From April to September, the island is cold and most visitor services close. Book early for December and January, since rooms are limited and fill up quickly.
Where to Stay
Sea Lion Lodge is the only accommodation on the island. It was built in 1986 and now operates under lease to Wild Falkland Ltd. The lodge holds about 20 guests in simple, comfortable rooms. Meals are served in a shared dining room and there is a lounge with views across the grassland.
Most stays are full board, with breakfast, lunch and dinner included. It is a good idea to ask for a room with a view toward the sea or the penguin colony.
Rooms are basic compared with luxury safari lodges, so expect comfort rather than glamour. Facilities like Wi-Fi can be limited.
Plan at least two nights and preferably three. Weather and FIGAS schedules can shorten your time. The best wildlife moments come with patience. Many couples pair Sea Lion Island with another outer island such as Saunders, Carcass or Bleaker for contrast.
Romantic Things to Do
Walk to the gentoo colonies in the early morning, when penguins are heading out to sea. Sit at a respectful distance and let them come to you.
Follow the coast to the rockhopper colony on the cliffs. These small crested penguins leap up the rocks with astonishing determination.
Visit the beaches where elephant seals rest. In spring, watch bulls battle and pups nurse, keeping at least 6 meters away and never blocking their route to the sea.
Spend time scanning the shore for orcas, especially from October to December.
Climb gentle Bull Hill to the HMS Sheffield memorial, which honors the sailors lost when the ship was struck in 1982.
Finish with an evening walk through the tussac grass at golden hour, followed by dinner and a drink at the lodge.
Getting There and Around
First, reach the Falklands. From the US, fly to Santiago, then take the LATAM service via Punta Arenas to Mount Pleasant. It runs on a limited schedule, so plan everything around it. Mount Pleasant is about 53 kilometers from Stanley by road.
To reach Sea Lion Island, take a FIGAS flight in a small aircraft from Stanley. Flights are scheduled daily according to demand and passengers are told their times the evening before, so stay flexible. The island has its own airstrip close to the lodge.
Baggage on FIGAS is limited to 20 kg per person. Excess weight costs extra and needs advance notice, so pack carefully.
On the island, everything is reached on foot. Distances are short, but the ground can be uneven and boggy. Lodge staff can advise on routes and wildlife locations.
Food and Drink
Meals at the lodge are home-style and hearty. Think roast lamb, fish, soups and fresh bread, often with local mutton. Falkland lamb is a point of pride, raised on open grassland. Desserts lean British, so expect crumbles and puddings.
Ask about dietary needs before arrival, since supplies come in by air or sea and options are limited.
The lodge bar is a social hub after a day outside. Wine, beer and spirits are imported, so prices reflect that.
In Stanley, look for fish and chips, local squid and seafood on pub menus. Falkland toothfish is a prized catch in these waters.
Tea is taken seriously in the islands, often served with cake and biscuits. Take advantage of afternoon tea at the lodge after a windy walk.
Stanley tap water is safe to drink. On outer islands, ask your host.
Honeymoon Tips
Book the lodge, FIGAS flights and your LATAM tickets together, ideally through a local agency. That saves headaches if weather changes plans.
Pack layers, a windproof and waterproof jacket with a hood and sturdy walking boots. The sun is strong, so add sunscreen and sunglasses.
Bring binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens. Even phones capture superb penguin shots, but orcas are often farther out.
Follow the Countryside Code. Keep at least 6 meters from wildlife and stay on the paths when asked. Do not touch or remove bones, eggs or plants.
Carry some cash in pounds for drinks and small purchases outside Stanley.
Let the lodge know you are on honeymoon. They may arrange a special dinner or a table with a view.
Allow a spare day at the end of your trip, in case weather delays your flights.
