The short answer

Guanacaste is Costa Rica's sunny beach chapter: golden coves, dry forest full of howler monkeys and Pacific sunsets on cue, with nonstop flights to Liberia from many US cities. Go December through April for near-constant sun, or late November and May for good weather at lower rates. Our pick is Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo, about 40 minutes from the airport. Spend three to five nights, ideally after a few in Arenal. Don't miss a sunset catamaran along the Papagayo coast.

Best for
  • Couples who want reliable sunshine
  • Luxury resorts close to the airport
  • Pairing with Arenal's rainforest
Maybe skip it if
  • You want deep jungle more than beach
  • Your dates fall in rainy September or October

If Arenal is Costa Rica's green, misty heart, Guanacaste is its sun-soaked smile. This northwestern province is the driest corner of the country, a landscape of golden pastures, flat-topped guanacaste trees and dry tropical forest that tumbles down to the Pacific in a long run of coves and crescent beaches. Days are bright, sunsets reliably put on a show and the pace slows to the rhythm of the tides.

For honeymooners, Guanacaste does two things brilliantly. First, it delivers beach luxury on par with anywhere in the Americas, especially on the Papagayo Peninsula, where a handful of exceptional resorts share a protected coastline. Second, it is wonderfully easy to reach. Guanacaste Airport in Liberia has nonstop flights from many US cities. The best resorts are under an hour away. That makes the region an easy standalone escape for a long weekend or the relaxing final chapter of a longer trip that starts in the rainforest. Expect howler monkeys at breakfast, catamarans at dusk and plenty of time to do absolutely nothing together.

Why Honeymoon in Guanacaste

The draw is sunshine. In the dry season, Guanacaste can go weeks without meaningful rain, which is exactly what you want when the plan is beach, pool, repeat. The coastline is varied, too: calm bays for swimming and paddleboarding, secluded coves you can reach only by boat or trail and wilder beaches for surfing.

Yet this is still Costa Rica, so nature is never far away. Monkeys and iguanas roam resort grounds and sea turtles nest on certain beaches. Inland, volcanoes such as Rincón de la Vieja offer bubbling mud pots and hot springs. You can mix a spa day with a surf lesson and a horseback ride on the sand, then end every evening with a front-row seat to the Pacific sunset.

When to Go

The dry season runs roughly from December through April, with near-constant sunshine and warm, breezy days. It is the most popular and priciest time, especially around the holidays and spring break, so book well ahead.

The green season, from May through November, brings afternoon showers and a dramatic transformation as the brown hills turn emerald. Mornings are often sunny, rates usually drop and the beaches feel pleasantly uncrowded. September and October tend to be the wettest months. For a balance of good weather and value, consider late November or May. Ocean conditions also shift seasonally, with clearer water for snorkeling generally in the drier months.

Where to Stay

The Papagayo Peninsula, about 40 minutes from Liberia's airport, is Guanacaste's luxury enclave, a protected stretch of dry forest and coastline with dozens of small beaches and only a few resorts.

Our pick for honeymooners is Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo, a Forbes Five-Star resort. It sits on an isthmus between two beaches, with a kid-free pool, Canopy Suites with private plunge pools, an Arnold Palmer golf course and a superb spa. It welcomes families, but it is large enough that couples can find calm.

Elsewhere on the peninsula, newer luxury resorts and a marina add choice. South along the coast, surf towns such as Tamarindo and beach villages near Playas del Coco offer boutique hotels and vacation rentals at friendlier prices.

Romantic Things to Do

  • Sail into the sunset on a catamaran along the Papagayo coast, with snorkeling stops and drinks on deck.
  • Take a surf lesson together in Tamarindo, where the beach break is forgiving for beginners.
  • Ride horses along the beach or through dry forest at golden hour.
  • Visit Rincón de la Vieja National Park for volcanic mud pots, waterfalls and a soak in natural hot springs.
  • Dive or snorkel the Catalina Islands, known for rays, turtles and schools of tropical fish.
  • Watch for nesting sea turtles on a guided night tour in season.
  • Book a couples massage with a Pacific view and do nothing else for the rest of the day.

Getting There & Around

Guanacaste Airport (LIR) in Liberia is the gateway, with nonstop service from a number of US hubs. The Papagayo Peninsula resorts are roughly 30 to 60 minutes away by car; beaches farther south take longer.

Most luxury resorts arrange private transfers, which is the easiest choice if you plan to stay put. To explore, renting a car gives the most freedom; roads between the main beach towns are generally good, but a 4x4 helps on rougher routes and during the rainy season. If you are coming from Arenal, the drive takes about three hours. Private shuttles connect the two regions daily.

Food & Drink

Guanacaste has a proud culinary identity rooted in corn and cattle country. Look for traditional dishes such as arroz de maíz, a hearty corn-based stew, along with sweet corn treats sold at roadside stands. Along the coast, the star is seafood: ceviche bright with lime and cilantro, whole fried snapper and grilled mahi-mahi caught that morning.

The luxury resorts bring plenty of polish, with steakhouses, Mediterranean beach clubs and rum bars. In the beach towns, casual spots serve fish tacos, poke bowls and cold local beer with your toes in the sand. A sunset cocktail on the beach is practically mandatory; order a guaro sour or a fresh fruit margarita and toast to the first night of married life.

Honeymoon Tips

Fly into San José and out of Liberia, or vice versa, to avoid backtracking if you are combining Arenal and Guanacaste. Three to five nights on the coast is the sweet spot after a few days in the rainforest.

Pack high-SPF, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and light layers; the dry-season breeze can be strong, especially in the early months of the year. Reserve sunset catamarans, spa treatments and special dinners in advance during peak season.

If you want maximum seclusion, book a suite with a private plunge pool and use the resort's kid-free spaces.

The Papagayo bays are usually calm, but open beaches farther south, Tamarindo included, can have strong rip currents. Swim near lifeguards or where your hotel recommends. Never leave anything in a parked car at beaches or trailheads, where break-ins are common.

FAQ

Guanacaste honeymoon FAQ

Is Guanacaste good for a honeymoon?

Yes. Guanacaste combines Costa Rica's sunniest weather with golden beaches, top-tier resorts and easy access from the US via Liberia's airport. It is ideal for couples who want a relaxing beach stay with optional adventures like surfing, diving and volcano hikes. It also pairs well with a few nights in the Arenal rainforest.

What is the best month to honeymoon in Guanacaste?

December through April offers the driest, sunniest weather but the highest demand and prices. For good weather with fewer crowds, consider late November or May. The green season from June to October brings afternoon showers and lush scenery, with September and October typically the rainiest months.

How far is the Papagayo Peninsula from Liberia airport?

The Papagayo Peninsula resorts are roughly 30 to 60 minutes by car from Guanacaste Airport (LIR) in Liberia, depending on where you are staying. Four Seasons, for example, is about 40 minutes away. Most luxury resorts offer private transfers, so you can be on the beach within a couple of hours of landing.

Can we combine Guanacaste with Arenal?

Definitely. It is the classic Costa Rica honeymoon route. The drive between Arenal and the Guanacaste coast takes about three hours. Many couples start with three or four nights in Arenal for hot springs and adventure, then finish with several beach nights before flying home from Liberia.

Do we need a car in Guanacaste?

Not necessarily. If you plan to stay mainly at a resort, private transfers and resort-arranged tours are easy and stress-free. If you want to explore beach towns, national parks and restaurants on your own, a rental car offers more flexibility; choose a 4x4 for rougher roads or the rainy season.
