Scale and Scenery
Bled is compact. The loop around the lake is about 3.7 miles and almost flat, so you can row to the island, climb to the castle and swim before lunch. The view everyone photographs, from Ojstrica or the higher Mala Osojnica, takes in the island, castle and peaks in one frame. Thirty minutes away, Lake Bohinj is bigger, wilder and better for swimming, with the Savica waterfall and a cable car up Vogel.
Como is sprawling. Its arms stretch for miles between mountains, with the Alps visible beyond. Scenery changes as you travel, from the elegant southern shore near Cernobbio to the central lake around Bellagio, where views are most dramatic. You explore by ferry, hydrofoil or private boat rather than on foot.
Bled feels like a single, perfect scene. Como feels like a landscape of many scenes. Both are lovely at dawn and after dinner, when day-trippers leave.
Hotels and Villas
Lake Como is home to some of the most celebrated hotels in Europe. Villa d'Este in Cernobbio is a 16th-century cardinal's villa with about 25 acres of gardens and a pool that floats on the lake. Passalacqua in Moltrasio is an intimate 24-room villa from the late 18th century, where Bellini composed, with terraced gardens and a house-party feel. The central lake adds Belle Epoque hotels in Bellagio and Tremezzo and small boutique stays in Varenna.
Bled's hotels are smaller and more personal. Hotel Triglav Bled is a historic hillside house with the island framed in its windows. Garden Village Bled has units built in the trees and over a stream, three minutes from the lake. Grand Hotel Toplice, over the lake's warm springs, is currently closed for renovation, so check before booking. Farm stays and chalets toward Bohinj offer meadows and dark skies.
Como wins on grandeur. Bled wins on charm per dollar.
Budget Difference
This is the biggest practical gap. Lake Como's grand hotels charge rates in high season that match the Amalfi Coast, often four figures a night for a lake-view room at the top addresses. Private boat tours, villa entries and long dinners add up. Smaller hotels in Varenna and Menaggio cost much less. The public ferries are inexpensive. Mixing a few nights of splurge with a few in a smaller hotel is a common approach.
Bled costs noticeably less. Our featured hotels start from roughly $260 to $280 a night. Good mid-range hotels and guesthouses in Slovenia often run about $130 to $250. Lake-view balconies cost more but are worth it. Dinner with a bottle of Slovenian wine runs about $90 to $150, though prices near the promenade are higher than elsewhere in the country. Pletna rides and kiosks often want cash.
All of these are approximate and rise in July and August.
Ways to Spend a Day
At Bled, take a pletna to the island. These flat wooden boats are rowed by a standing oarsman, a job passed down through local families since the 18th century. Climb the 99 steps, where custom says the groom carries the bride, then ring the bell and make a wish. Hike to a lookout at sunrise, rent a rowboat for an evening paddle and share kremšnita cream cake at Hotel Park. Spend a day at Bohinj, walk Vintgar Gorge with advance tickets or take a dawn balloon flight in calm weather.
On Como, book a private tour on a vintage wooden motorboat for the late-afternoon light. Visit Villa del Balbianello on its wooded promontory near Lenno, Villa Carlotta's spring gardens and the lakeside paths at Villa Melzi in Bellagio. Ride the funicular from Como to Brunate. Hike the trails above Varenna or Tremezzo or swim from a wooden dock.
Bled suits active couples. Como suits couples who want beauty at a slower pace.
Seasons and Crowds
Both lakes are at their best in May, June and September. At Bled, the water is pleasant for swimming by June and mountain trails open, though serious high hikes are best from July. At Como, gardens are lush, evenings are warm enough for terrace dinners and swimming is comfortable from late June. April is lovely at Como for azaleas and camellias.
July and August are busy at both. Day-trippers from Ljubljana fill Bled's shoreline from late morning. Bled Days in late July ends with fireworks. Como's ferries and Bellagio get crowded and afternoon thunderstorms can roll off the mountains.
The off-season differs. From about November to March, many Como hotels, restaurants and ferry routes close or reduce service and the lake can be misty. Bled stays open, with a small Christmas market and snowy views in December, though outdoor activities pause. Visit both early or late in the day to see them at their quietest.
Flights and Transfers
Lake Como is easier to reach from the US. Milan Malpensa (MXP) has nonstop service from several US cities. A private transfer to Cernobbio or Moltrasio takes about an hour and to Bellagio or Tremezzo closer to an hour and a half. Trains run from Milan to Como and along the eastern shore to Varenna. On the lake, Navigazione Laghi ferries and hydrofoils link the main towns. Most couples skip the car.
Lake Bled usually needs one connection through a European hub into Ljubljana (LJU), about 35 minutes away by taxi or transfer. Buses from Ljubljana take about 75 minutes. Some couples fly into Venice or Trieste and drive. Once there, you walk or rent bikes. A car helps for Bohinj, Vintgar Gorge and the Vršič Pass into the Soča Valley, though parking is limited and paid in summer.
For a short honeymoon, Como's simpler journey counts for a lot.
Linking the Two Lakes
Bled and Como are about five to six hours apart by car through northern Italy, so they can share a trip with a stop along the way. A two-week route could start with three nights at Bled and two in the Soča Valley, drive through Goriška Brda's vineyards toward Venice for two nights and then take the high-speed train to Milan for four or five nights on Lake Como. Venice is about two and a half hours from Milan by train.
For a week, choose one lake and add a neighbor. Bled pairs well with Ljubljana and Piran on the Adriatic. Como pairs well with Venice or Milan itself.
If you cannot decide, think about what you want to do on an ordinary afternoon. If the answer is a hike and a swim, go to Bled. If it is a long lunch, a boat and a nap by a pool, go to Como.
