Passalacqua does not feel like a hotel so much as an invitation to a long, languid house party in the Italian countryside, the kind of villeggiatura that Lombard nobles once spent the summer enjoying. The villa was built at the end of the 18th century for Count Andrea Lucini-Passalacqua. In 1831 the composer Vincenzo Bellini stayed here while writing his opera La Sonnambula. Winston Churchill passed through later. In 2018 the De Santis family, Lake Como natives who own the Grand Hotel Tremezzo across the water, bought the estate, spent three years restoring it and opened it to guests in June 2022.
The reception was immediate and extraordinary. In its first full season it was named No. 1 on the inaugural World's 50 Best Hotels list and has stayed on that list ever since. With only 24 rooms, set among cypress-framed terraces that tumble toward the lake, it is about as exclusive as Lake Como gets. For honeymooners, the appeal is intimacy: you will share a magnificent villa with a few dozen other guests and staff who treat every request as a pleasure.

A Villa Made for Villeggiatura
Passalacqua sits in Moltrasio, a quiet village on the western shore a short drive north of Cernobbio and the city of Como. The villa itself was designed by the Milanese architect Carlo Felice Soave. Its gardens were first laid out in the 18th century as a series of green rooms stepping down to the water.
Today those terraces are the backbone of daily life. Ancient cypresses and cedars frame the parterres, fountains murmur along a winding central axis and a kitchen garden offers fruit and herbs for the picking. There is a pergola heavy with table grapes, a bocce court, free-range hens whose eggs you can collect and, everywhere you turn, a fresh angle on the lake and the mountains beyond.
Villa, Palazz or Casa al Lago
The 24 rooms are split among three distinct buildings, each with its own mood.
- The Villa holds 12 rooms, from elegant doubles to grand suites up to roughly 2,700 square feet, with frescoes, silk, antiques and, in most, big views of the lake. Suite names such as Bellini and Norma nod to the composer's stay.
- The Palazz, behind the Villa, has eight warm, antique-filled rooms that feel snug and sheltered, a good choice for couples who prize quiet.
- Casa al Lago, set in the gardens near the water, has four rooms with front-row lake views and can be booked as an exclusive-use enclave.
For a honeymoon, a lake-view room in the Villa or Casa al Lago is the dream. Interiors throughout are lavish and layered, with no two rooms alike.
Grand Villa Cuisine
The kitchen is led by chef Viviana Varese and built on a simple principle: you should be able to eat beautifully wherever and whenever you like. Breakfast is a generous spread of pastries, cakes, Parma ham, fresh juice and eggs cooked to order, served inside or out on the terrace.
Lunch is relaxed and al fresco, at the pool bar pavilion, on the restaurant terrace or at a table for two in the garden. Evening begins with aperitivo, a Negroni or a glass of champagne, at the old-school bar by the pool. Dinner is classic, seasonal Italian cooking served either on the candlelit terrace or in the Sala Ovale beneath frescoed ceilings. Ask for a picnic hamper to take out on the boat. Sign up for the weekly gelato-making class too.
Why guests fall for it
Pool, Spa and Gardens Below Ground
The outdoor pool sits on a garden terrace just below the Villa, edged by climbing roses and a great bay tree, with the lake glittering beyond. It is calm, never crowded and good for a whole afternoon of reading and swimming.
The spa is one of the property's surprises. It occupies the vaulted ground-floor hall of the Palazz and connects to an underground gallery dug in the 18th century beneath the gardens. There is a sauna and steam room in a stone chamber, a heated indoor pool and a rock-hewn relaxation area. Treatments use Seed to Skin, a Tuscan organic line. Some take place outdoors in the orchard. Daily yoga and meditation are held in a circle of ancient magnolias. You can also book the underground pool privately before or after regular hours.
Days on the Water
Lake Como is best experienced from a boat. Passalacqua has a small fleet of vintage and modern launches, including a restored Riva Olympic and an Aquariva. Head out with the hotel's boatman for a gentle sunset cruise, a champagne trip or a full day exploring Bellagio, Varenna and the gardens of Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta, with a chef-made picnic on board.
Back on land there is a clay tennis court, open-air classic film screenings, tours of the underground tunnels, board games in the library and even a vintage Vespa driving tour. Hiking and cycling trails start in the hills just above Moltrasio.
Why Guests Fall in Love
The overwhelming theme in guest feedback is that Passalacqua feels like staying in a friend's magnificent private home. Couples praise staff who seem to know what they want before they ask. They love that meals and drinks can appear wherever they happen to be, from the garden to the boat.
Guests also rave about the interiors, which are lavish, witty and full of character. The gardens win praise too, described as a place to wander for hours. The small number of rooms means a hushed, exclusive mood. Many say the experience lived up to its considerable reputation, which is no small thing for a hotel that topped the World's 50 Best Hotels list in its first year.
