The short answer

Choose Flic en Flac if you want sunsets over the sea, calmer water in the southern winter and a village where you can walk out for cheap, tasty dinners. Choose Belle Mare if you want the longer, softer beach, the grandest resorts on the island and a shorter airport transfer, provided you are happy to stay in most evenings. Flic en Flac is livelier and better value. Belle Mare is quieter and more polished.

This is the classic Mauritius question in its simplest form: west coast or east coast. Flic en Flac and Belle Mare are the main resort areas on each side, about 90 minutes apart by car.

Flic en Flac sits on the west coast in Black River district. It has one of the longest public beaches on the island and a reef-protected lagoon. Most of the larger resorts gather at the southern end, known as Wolmar. Behind them is a real village with snack stalls, small restaurants and weekend crowds of Mauritian families on the sand.

Belle Mare is on the east coast, where a strip of fine white sand runs for miles past casuarina trees between Pointe de Flacq and Trou d'Eau Douce. Some of the best-known resorts in the Indian Ocean line this shore. There is little nightlife beyond the hotels, which suits couples who want long dinners and early nights.

The sun sets in front of one and rises in front of the other. That turns out to sum up a lot of the differences.

Sunsets, Sunrises and the Beach Itself

Flic en Flac's headline is the evening. Only the west coast gets the sun dropping into the Indian Ocean. Most resort beaches at Wolmar face the right way for it. Taking drinks down to the sand to watch the light change over the lagoon becomes a nightly ritual. The water is shallow and gentle behind the reef, with easy snorkeling from the beach on calm days.

Belle Mare's headline is the beach. The sand is soft and runs long enough that you can walk for half an hour and pass only a few people, even with several big resorts sharing it. The water deepens gently, so swimming is easy at most tides. The show here comes at dawn, when the sky lightens over the reef.

Both beaches are public along the shore. Flic en Flac's central public stretch is busy on weekends with local families and music, while the resort sections stay calmer.

Which Side for Which Season

Season tips the balance more than many couples expect. From June to August, the southeast trade winds blow steadily across the east coast. Belle Mare's lagoon can be choppy for days at a time and late afternoons on the beach feel cool. The west coast is sheltered from that wind, so Flic en Flac stays sunnier and flatter. If you are traveling in the southern winter, the west is the safer bet.

From September to December the east comes into its own as the wind eases and the sea warms. That is Belle Mare's strongest window. Flic en Flac is also excellent from September to November, plus May and June.

January to March is hot and wet everywhere, with cyclone risk. The east coast catches more rain than the west, which again favors Flic en Flac for a summer honeymoon. Travel insurance and some flexibility are wise in those months. Prices peak on both coasts over the holidays.

Resort Styles and Prices

Belle Mare is where Mauritius keeps its most famous resorts. One&Only Le Saint Géran sits on its own peninsula. Constance Prince Maurice, with thatched suites on stilts over a mangrove inlet and very few neighbors, usually starts around $900 a night. Constance Belle Mare Plage, LUX* Belle Mare and Long Beach line the main beach. Shangri-La Le Touessrok has a private island for guests. Villas and small hotels in Palmar and Belle Mare village cost far less.

Flic en Flac has a broader spread. At Wolmar, Sugar Beach has a colonial-style manor house, La Pirogue has thatched cottages shaped like fishing boats and Maradiva gives each villa its own plunge pool. Closer to the village are smaller hotels, guesthouses and apartments for tighter budgets. Upscale resorts on the west coast run from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars a night.

All prices are approximate and change with season and room type.

Life Beyond the Resort Gates

Flic en Flac has the edge for couples who like to wander. The village has a supermarket, souvenir stalls and casual restaurants within walking distance of several hotels. Roadside stalls sell dholl puri and gateaux piments, while local menus offer grilled fish, octopus curry and Creole rougaille. You can spend the day at your resort and walk to a beach shack for dinner without booking a driver.

Belle Mare is a stay-in coast. The big resorts have enough restaurants, from beach grills to Japanese and fine dining, that half board often makes sense. Still, get out at least twice. The fishing villages of Trou d'Eau Douce, Palmar and Poste de Flacq have small family restaurants serving the day's catch at a fraction of resort prices. The morning market at Centre de Flacq is worth a visit for pineapple, lychee in season and street snacks.

Things to Do on Each Coast

From Flic en Flac, the west coast's diving is the standout. The Cathedral, a rocky reef with arches and swim-throughs, is the local favorite. Dive centers in the village take both beginners and certified divers. Black River Gorges National Park has forest trails, gorge viewpoints and endemic birds. Catamarans sail the coast with snorkel stops. Le Morne Brabant and Chamarel are only 30 to 45 minutes south.

From Belle Mare, the signature outing is an early boat from Trou d'Eau Douce to Île aux Cerfs, ideally before the day-trippers arrive around late morning. Many trips add the Grand River South East waterfall, where the river drops into a narrow gorge near the sea. Private catamarans serve grilled seafood lunches on board. Golfers have the Constance courses and the course on Île aux Cerfs. The spas here are among the largest on the island, good for breezy afternoons.

Getting There From the US

Mauritius has no nonstop flights from the US. Most couples connect through Dubai, Paris, London, Istanbul or Johannesburg into Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport (MRU), with total travel time often 20 hours or more.

The airport is in the southeast, which helps Belle Mare. The transfer runs about 45 to 60 minutes along the eastern road, one of the shortest on the island. Flic en Flac is about an hour away, sometimes longer with traffic around the central plateau. Book private transfers to either before you fly.

For exploring, a hired driver or rental car works on both coasts. Mauritians drive on the left. Flic en Flac is easier without wheels, since taxis wait in the village and some restaurants are walkable. Belle Mare's resorts are more spread out along the coastal road. Agree on taxi fares before setting off.

One Island, Two Coasts

Our guides to both coasts suggest the same thing: many couples split their stay. It works especially well with this pair, because the contrast is real. Spend the first part of the trip at Flic en Flac for sunsets and village dinners, then cross to Belle Mare for the final nights. The drive takes about 90 minutes. Finishing in the east puts you close to the airport for a final morning swim before the flight home.

If you are traveling in July or August, weight the trip toward the west and keep the east short. From September to December, both coasts are at their best and an even split makes sense.

FAQ

Flic en Flac vs Belle Mare: your questions

Is Flic en Flac or Belle Mare better for a honeymoon?

Flic en Flac is better for sunsets, calm winter water and a lively village with cheap local food. Belle Mare is better for a long white beach, grand resorts and a short airport transfer. Choose by season and style: the west from June to August, the east from September to December, or split your stay between both.

Which coast of Mauritius has better weather?

The west coast around Flic en Flac is drier and sunnier. It is also sheltered from the southeast trade winds that blow across the east from June to August. The east coast around Belle Mare catches more wind and rain but is excellent from September to December, when the breeze eases and the sea warms up.

Is Flic en Flac too busy for a honeymoon?

The central public beach gets lively on weekends with local families and music, which some couples enjoy. The resorts at the Wolmar end are much quieter, with loungers reserved for guests and calm lagoon swimming in front. Weekdays are calmer everywhere. If you want near-total quiet, Belle Mare's resorts feel more secluded.

How far apart are Flic en Flac and Belle Mare?

About 90 minutes by car, crossing the island on the motorway. That is easy to manage with a private transfer or a hired driver, so splitting a honeymoon between the two coasts is common. Most couples start in the west and finish in the east, which is closer to the airport.

Can we snorkel from the beach at Flic en Flac and Belle Mare?

At Flic en Flac, yes, in calm conditions. The reef-protected lagoon has coral patches and fish close to shore, especially toward the reef edge. At Belle Mare the water is lovely for swimming but better snorkeling usually means a boat trip toward the reef or around Île aux Cerfs. Pack reef shoes for urchins.
