Hotel Marqués de Riscal is the most famous place to sleep in Rioja and one of the most recognizable hotels in Europe. Frank Gehry, the architect of Bilbao's Guggenheim, wrapped it in curling ribbons of titanium in pink, gold and silver, a nod to the colors of the wine, the gold mesh on Riscal bottles and the silver of the capsule. It rises directly above the Marqués de Riscal winery in Elciego, with vineyards on all sides and the medieval villages of the Rioja Alavesa on the horizon.

For a honeymoon, it combines three things couples tend to want from wine country: a dramatic room to come back to, a wine-based Caudalie spa with an indoor pool and a Michelin-starred restaurant on the top floor of the Gehry building. Winery tours and tastings happen steps from the lobby.

It suits couples who love architecture, food and wine and are happy to spend two or three nights in a small village. It is part of Marriott's Luxury Collection, so points collectors can sometimes use them here. Couples who want a beach or a lively town at night should pair it with San Sebastián or Bilbao rather than stay longer.

Why Couples Love Marqués de Riscal

Arriving is half the fun. The road into Elciego passes through vineyards and sandstone villages before the titanium canopy suddenly appears over the rooftops, looking faintly unreal against the old church tower. Inside, rooms have tilted walls, odd-shaped windows and views framed through the metal ribbons.

The hotel also sits on a working estate with real history. Marqués de Riscal claims one of the oldest wineries in Rioja. The original 19th-century cellar buildings stand beside the hotel. That means a tour and tasting is not a day trip but a short walk. Evenings are quiet once day visitors leave. Couples tend to drift from the wine bar to dinner to a nightcap without stepping outside. Staff can also arrange bicycles to ride through the vines to Laguardia.

Rooms and Suites to Book

The hotel is small, with a few dozen rooms and suites. Rooms in the Gehry building are the ones to book for a honeymoon. Each has its own shape and view, with the titanium ribbons swooping past the windows. They are the reason most people come. They are also the most requested, so book them by name.

The neighboring wing, often called the spa wing, has calmer, more conventional rooms that connect easily to the Caudalie spa. They are comfortable and often a little cheaper, but you lose the sense of sleeping inside a sculpture.

A suite in the Gehry building is the splurge, with more space and the most dramatic views over the estate and Elciego. Ask for a room with a terrace if one is available. Light sleepers should note that a busy winery operates next door during harvest.

Food, Drink and the Spa

The fine-dining restaurant sits on the top level of the Gehry building and is Michelin-starred. Its tasting menus take Riojan and Basque traditions in a modern direction, paired with wines from the estate and well beyond. Book it for one special evening and reserve ahead, since it fills with outside guests.

For something more relaxed, the first-floor café and wine bar serves lighter food and a long list of Riscal wines by the glass. It is a good place for an afternoon tasting with a plate of Iberian ham.

The Spa Vinothérapie Caudalie uses grape-based products in its massages, baths and scrubs. There is an indoor pool, a sauna and a large fitness room. A couples massage after a morning in the cellars is the classic Rioja afternoon.

Things to Do

Start with the winery tour and tasting on site, which covers the historic cellars as well as modern production. From there, the Rioja Alavesa is small enough to explore by bike or car. Laguardia, a walled hilltop town riddled with wine cellars, is about ten minutes away. The Ysios winery, designed by Santiago Calatrava, sits below the Sierra de Cantabria nearby.

Haro, across the Ebro, has a station district packed with historic bodegas, many within walking distance of each other. Logroño, the regional capital, is about 30 minutes away and is the place for an evening of pintxos on Calle Laurel. A day trip to San Sebastián or Bilbao takes about 1.5–2 hours each way.

Whoever is driving should stick to spitting at tastings, or hire a driver for the day.

Getting There

Bilbao Airport (BIO) is the usual gateway, about 130 km or roughly 1.5 hours by car. Many US travelers connect through Madrid or another European hub. Vitoria Airport (VIT) and the small Logroño-Agoncillo Airport (RJL) are closer but have limited flights. Madrid is about four hours by road, or you can take a train to Logroño and a taxi from there.

A rental car is the easiest way to see the region. The hotel has parking. Roads are quiet and well signed, though village streets are narrow. If you would rather not drive, the hotel can arrange transfers and the concierge can book drivers for winery days. In past years the hotel has closed for a few weeks in January for maintenance, so check dates if you are traveling then.

Is It Worth It?

For architecture lovers, yes, even for a single night. There is no other room in Spain quite like a Gehry room here. The combination of a starred restaurant, a wine spa and a historic cellar in one place is rare. Expect rates very roughly from about $450–700 a night for a standard room, approximate, with suites and harvest-season weekends higher.

The trade-offs are real. Elciego is a small village with little nightlife, rooms in the spa wing feel ordinary by comparison and the hotel attracts many day visitors who come to photograph the building. Couples who want a quieter, more rustic wine estate might prefer a winery guesthouse or a small hotel in Laguardia. Book two nights, take the Gehry room and spend the second day out among the bodegas.

Insider tips

  1. Request a room in the Gehry building by name; the spa wing is calmer but less special.
  2. Book the restaurant and the spa when you book the room, since both fill with outside guests.
  3. Borrow or rent bicycles and ride the vineyard lanes to Laguardia for lunch.
  4. Pair two nights here with San Sebastián for beaches and pintxos.

FAQ

Hotel Marqués de Riscal, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Elciego questions, answered

Who designed Hotel Marqués de Riscal?

Frank Gehry, the architect behind the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, designed the hotel's main building. Its curving titanium ribbons in pink, gold and silver echo the colors of red wine, the gold mesh on Marqués de Riscal bottles and the silver capsule. The building sits over the winery's historic cellars in the village of Elciego.

Which rooms should honeymooners book?

Book a room or suite in the Gehry building. Each has a unique shape and views framed by the titanium canopy, which is the reason most couples come. The neighboring wing has more conventional rooms connected to the spa. They are comfortable and sometimes cheaper, but far less memorable for a special trip.

Does the hotel have a spa and pool?

Yes. The Spa Vinothérapie Caudalie offers grape-based treatments, including baths and scrubs. It also has an indoor pool, a sauna and a fitness room. Treatments are popular with outside guests too, so reserve when you book your room, particularly for weekends and the autumn harvest season.

How do we get to Elciego?

Fly into Bilbao (BIO), about 1.5 hours away by car, often via Madrid or another European hub. A rental car is the easiest option, since the Rioja Alavesa's villages and wineries are spread out. The hotel can also arrange transfers and drivers if neither of you wants to drive after tastings.

When is the best time to visit Rioja for a honeymoon?

September and October are the most exciting months, with the harvest underway and the vines turning gold and red. May and June bring green vineyards and mild weather. Summer afternoons can be hot, while winter is quiet and cold. The hotel has closed for a few weeks in January in some years, so check before booking.
