The first time you look out from a Boulders suite, you understand the name. Great rounded granite rocks, worn smooth over millennia, rise from the bush along the Sand River. The lodge has been built among them as though it had always been there. Thatch, timber and stone blend into the riverbank; glass walls dissolve the line between bedroom and wilderness; and a heated plunge pool on your deck invites you to watch elephants wade across the river while you float.

Singita is one of Africa's most respected safari names. Its story began right here. The Bailes family has owned this land since 1926. The company's first lodge, Ebony, opened next door in 1993. Boulders followed as its more contemporary sibling. Together they share a private corner of the Sabi Sand, a region famous for some of the most reliable leopard sightings on the continent. For a honeymoon that combines thrilling wildlife with polished comfort, it sets the bar very high.

Highlights at a glance

  • Private heated plunge pool on every suite deck
  • Floor-to-ceiling glass views over the Sand River
  • Some of Africa's most reliable leopard sightings
  • Access to about 45,000 acres of private wilderness
  • Bush dinners by lantern and firelight
  • Conservation work through the Singita Lowveld Trust

Sand River Country

The Sabi Sand is a cluster of private reserves on the western edge of Kruger National Park, with no fences between them, so wildlife moves freely across the whole ecosystem. Singita's slice is roughly 45,000 acres of riverine forest, open grassland and granite outcrops. Access is limited to guests of its lodges.

The Sand River is the lifeline that ties it all together. During the dry winter months, it draws animals from across the region. From your deck you may see elephants, buffalo and antelope coming down to drink. At night, the sounds take over: hyenas whooping in the distance, a lion roaring somewhere across the water and frogs chorusing along the banks.

Suites Carved into the Riverbank

Each suite at Boulders is designed to feel like a private wilderness retreat. Generous glass-walled interiors, handmade furnishings and natural textures mirror the colors of the bush, while a private deck curves along the river like the water itself. Every suite has its own heated plunge pool, which means cool winter afternoons can still be spent soaking in the sun.

Inside, expect a large bed facing the view, a sitting area for reading between drives and a spacious bathroom that opens toward the bush. The suites are spaced along the riverbank for privacy, so you will rarely see another guest outside of meals and game drives. Because the lodge is unfenced, guides escort you between your suite and the main areas after dark, which only adds to the sense of being somewhere wild.

Dining in the Bush

Meals at Singita are as much an event as the game drives. Breakfast and lunch are often served on outdoor terraces facing the river. The kitchen is known for fresh, beautifully presented food with a focus on local produce and seasonal flavors.

The most romantic meals happen under the stars. The team can arrange bush dinners lit by lanterns and firelight, private dinners on your deck or a candlelit table for two by the river. Singita is also renowned for its wine program. The lodge offers a wine experience for couples who want to explore South Africa's finest bottles with expert guidance. Let the team know about your honeymoon when booking so they can plan a surprise or two.

Wellness Between Game Drives

Safari days start early and end late, so the hours in between are precious. Boulders offers wellness treatments, yoga and a fitness center, plus the main lodge pool for those who want a change from their plunge pool.

Many couples find that the most restorative ritual is simply an afternoon nap followed by an hour on the deck with a book and binoculars. For something special, ask about a private yoga session at sunrise or an in-suite treatment after an afternoon drive. Stargazing is also on the activity list. The skies above the Sabi Sand on a clear winter night are dazzling.

Leopards, Trackers and Walking Safaris

Game drives in open vehicles are the heart of every day, with a ranger and tracker team that reads the bush with remarkable skill. Sabi Sand is famous for leopards habituated to vehicles, so sightings here can be long, close and intimate. Lions, elephants, buffalo and rhinos round out the Big Five, alongside cheetahs, wild dogs, hyenas and more than 300 bird species across the region.

Guided bush walks offer a completely different perspective, focusing on tracks, plants and smaller creatures. Singita also supports an anti-poaching canine unit. Guests can sometimes learn about its work. Conservation is central to Singita's philosophy. The Singita Lowveld Trust funds biodiversity research and community projects in the region.

Why Guests Fall in Love

Guests consistently describe their wildlife sightings at Singita as the best of their lives, often naming a leopard encounter as the moment that stopped their breath. Rangers and trackers come in for constant praise for their knowledge, patience and humor. Many travelers say they felt like friends by the end of the stay.

The suites earn equal admiration, particularly the glass walls and private pools that make it possible to watch wildlife from bed. Reviewers also love the food, the thoughtful surprises arranged for special occasions and the deep sense of calm the lodge creates between drives. Many say they started planning a return trip before leaving.

Good to Know

  • Safari rates at Singita are typically inclusive of meals, most drinks and game activities; confirm the details with Singita when booking.
  • Wake-up calls come early, often before dawn, especially in summer. Plan to nap in the afternoon.
  • Light, small luggage is recommended for the small planes that serve the Sabi Sand airstrips.
  • The dry winter months, roughly May to September, offer the easiest wildlife viewing; summer brings lush scenery, baby animals and migratory birds.
  • The Sabi Sand is in a malaria area. Speak to your doctor about precautions before you travel. Mention it if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, since that changes the advice.
  • Families are welcome, so ask about suite placement if you want the quietest location.

Insider tips

  1. Mention your honeymoon when booking so the team can plan a private bush dinner or deck setup.
  2. Stay at least three nights to give your guide time to find the animals on your wish list.
  3. Pack neutral-colored layers; winter mornings on an open vehicle can be surprisingly cold.
  4. Pair Boulders with a few nights in the Cape Winelands for a classic South African safari-and-wine honeymoon.

FAQ

Singita Boulders Lodge questions, answered

How do we get to Singita Boulders Lodge?

Most travelers fly from Johannesburg (OR Tambo, JNB) to Skukuza Airport or a private airstrip in the Sabi Sand, a flight of roughly an hour, followed by a short transfer to the lodge. US travelers usually arrive in Johannesburg on an overnight nonstop flight. Singita's in-house travel team can coordinate flights and connections.

What is the difference between Singita Boulders and Singita Ebony?

Both lodges sit on the Sand River in Singita Sabi Sand and share the same private reserve, rangers' territory and wildlife. Ebony, opened in 1993, was Singita's very first lodge. Boulders is its neighbor, designed around thatch, timber, glass and the ancient granite rocks it is named after. Choose based on the style and suite layout that appeal to you most.

When is the best time for a safari at Singita Boulders?

The dry winter season, roughly May to September, offers excellent game viewing as vegetation thins and animals gather near water. Summer, from about November to March, brings green landscapes, newborn animals, migratory birds and dramatic afternoon storms. Wildlife viewing in the Sabi Sand is rewarding throughout the year.

Are rates at Singita Boulders all-inclusive?

Like most top safari lodges, Singita's rates are generally inclusive of accommodation, meals, most beverages and twice-daily game activities. Flights, spa treatments and some premium wines may be charged separately. Rates and inclusions can change, so confirm the details with Singita or your travel advisor when you book.

Is Singita Boulders good for a honeymoon?

It is one of the most romantic safari lodges in Africa. Every suite has a private heated pool and panoramic river views. The team can arrange bush dinners, deck dinners and other surprises. The combination of close wildlife encounters and refined comfort makes it ideal for couples.
