The Cotton House

Seventeen rooms, thirteen acres and the island everyone whispers about

The Cotton House is the only hotel on Mustique, which makes it the way to experience this famously private island without renting a villa. It has 17 suites and cottages set in 13 acres of tropical gardens above Endeavour Bay. Each has a private veranda and many have their own plunge pool. The clubhouse at its center was designed by Oliver Messel in 1968, the stage and set designer whose work shaped the look of early Mustique.

For a honeymoon, it offers something no villa can: hotel service with a restaurant, a bar and a spa on site, plus the full freedom of the island. You can spend the morning on the hotel's beach, ride an open-air mule to Macaroni Beach for a picnic, play tennis under floodlights and finish at Basil's Bar over the water. Mustique has no crowds, no cruise ships and very little traffic and the homeowners who control it like it that way.

The Cotton House suits couples who want discreet luxury with some history behind it and a short, well-run stay. Villas make more sense for a week or longer. Rates are high and getting here takes planning, but few Caribbean islands feel this calm.

Highlights at a glance

  • The only hotel on Mustique
  • 17 suites and cottages in 13 acres of gardens
  • Oliver Messel clubhouse from 1968
  • Rebuilt spa with nine treatment rooms
  • Beach on Endeavour Bay and Basil's Bar nearby

Why Couples Choose The Cotton House

Mustique's appeal has always been privacy. The island is owned by the Mustique Company, which is controlled by its homeowners and there are only around 120 private villas alongside this one hotel. That keeps the island quiet in a way that larger Caribbean destinations cannot match. Staying at The Cotton House gives you access to all of it without the cost or commitment of a villa.

The hotel itself feels more like a well-kept country house than a resort. The Messel clubhouse, with its wide verandas and cooling fans, sets the tone and the gardens are full of birdlife. The Great Room Bar is the island's original bar and still a good place to start an evening. With only 17 rooms, staff learn your names quickly and the pace stays unhurried. Couples who like a hotel with personality, rather than a brand, tend to fall for it.

Rooms and Suites to Book

All 17 rooms have private verandas and the categories are split mainly by view.

  • Garden View rooms and cottages look over the tropical grounds and their wildlife. They are the gentler price point and feel very private.
  • Sea View suites look across the Caribbean toward St. Vincent. For a honeymoon, these are the ones to ask for, since the view from the veranda at sunset is a large part of the stay.
  • The Residence is the hotel's largest option, with its own private pool, for couples who want villa-style space with hotel service.

Many rooms include a plunge pool, but not all, so confirm when you book if that matters to you. Cottages are spread through the gardens and feel more secluded than rooms near the clubhouse. With so few rooms, peak dates around Christmas and New Year fill very early.

Food, Drink and the Spa

The Veranda Restaurant wraps around the clubhouse and focuses on Vincentian ingredients and flavors, with dishes smoked and grilled over flame. It works for both long dinners and a relaxed breakfast. Down on the sand, the Beach Café is the hotel's social spot for long lunches under the palms and occasional evening meals. The Great Room Bar handles cocktails before dinner.

Basil's Bar, about a five-minute mule ride away, sits on stilts over the water at Britannia Bay. It is the classic place for sunset drinks and the island's weekly jump-up.

The Spa at the Cotton House reopened in November 2025 after a full rebuild in an Oliver Messel style villa. It has nine treatment rooms, each with a private outdoor rainfall shower and treatments can also be given in your room. Book a couples treatment early in the week, since slots fill quickly.

Things to Do on Mustique

Mustique is small enough to explore in a day, but most couples spread it over several. Rent a mule, the island's open-air buggy and drive to Macaroni Beach on the Atlantic side, a wide crescent of powder-white sand shaded by palms where you can book a gazebo for a picnic. Swim and snorkel closer to the hotel at Endeavour Bay, where the Watersports Centre lends masks and fins for the nearby reefs and supports a coral restoration project.

The Mustique Tennis Club has floodlit courts, including pickleball and padel, open from early morning to evening and free for guests. The Equestrian Centre runs trail rides and lets you swim with horses, which is a memorable shared experience for riders and beginners alike.

The Atlantic beaches can have strong surf, so swim where it is calm. Bring repellent for dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.

Getting There

Mustique Airport (MQS) is served by Air Adelphi, owned by the Mustique Company, flying 18-seat Twin Otter aircraft. The flight from Barbados (BGI) takes about 50 minutes and from St. Vincent (SVD) about 10 minutes. There are also connections from St. Lucia (UVF), roughly 25 minutes.

Timing matters. Planes cannot land on Mustique after sunset and the island's travel team advises that your international flight should reach the hub by mid-afternoon or a same-day connection is not guaranteed. Many couples overnight in Barbados on the way in.

Each passenger is allowed one checked bag of up to 20 kg (44 lb) plus soft-sided hand luggage. Pack overnight essentials and any medication in your hand luggage in case bags arrive on a later flight. The hotel is a few minutes from the airstrip and the island's travel desk can help arrange connections.

Is It Worth It?

For a short honeymoon or the first few nights of a Grenadines trip, yes. The Cotton House is the simplest way to experience Mustique and the combination of a small historic hotel, a rebuilt spa and the island's privacy is rare anywhere.

It is still expensive for what is a small, classic hotel rather than a full resort and rooms are quoted without meals. Flights add a meaningful cost on top. Couples staying a week or more often find a Mustique villa better value, especially if they want a private pool and staff. Couples who want nonstop service, multiple restaurants and a big pool scene will be happier at Mandarin Oriental, Canouan. On a tighter budget, base yourselves at Bequia Beach Hotel and visit Mustique for the day by boat, with lunch at Basil's.

Insider tips

  1. Ask for a Sea View suite with a plunge pool and confirm the pool in writing.
  2. Plan to overnight in Barbados if your international flight lands after early afternoon.
  3. Book a gazebo at Macaroni Beach for a picnic lunch on a weekday.
  4. Go to Basil's for the weekly jump-up at least once; ask the hotel which night it runs.

FAQ

The Cotton House questions, answered

Is The Cotton House the only hotel on Mustique?

Yes. The island has around 120 private villas, many available to rent through the Mustique Company, but The Cotton House is described as its only hotel. That makes it the choice for couples who want hotel service, a restaurant and a spa on site without committing to a villa. Book well ahead for peak dates.

Do rooms have private pools?

Many of the 17 suites and cottages have plunge pools and all have private verandas. The Residence, the largest option, has its own private pool. Not every room has a pool, so confirm with the hotel when booking if it is important to you. Sea View rooms look across the water toward St. Vincent.

How do we get to Mustique?

Air Adelphi flies small Twin Otter planes to Mustique Airport (MQS) from Barbados in about 50 minutes and from St. Vincent in about 10 minutes, with connections from St. Lucia too. Planes cannot land after sunset, so plan for your international flight to arrive by mid-afternoon or stay a night in Barbados first.

What is there to do on Mustique?

Swim at Endeavour Bay and Macaroni Beach, snorkel the nearby reefs, play tennis or padel at the floodlit tennis club, ride or swim with horses at the Equestrian Centre and drive around in an open-air mule. Evenings center on the hotel bar and Basil's, which hosts the island's jump-up.

Is The Cotton House better than renting a villa?

It depends on how long you stay. For a few nights, the hotel is simpler, with a restaurant, bar, spa and staff on hand. For a week or more, a villa often offers better value and more privacy, with a private pool and your own staff. Some couples combine the two, starting at the hotel and moving to a villa.
