Little Kulala is the lodge to book if you want luxury and the fastest access to the Sossusvlei dunes. It sits in the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve, about 27,000 hectares bordering Namib-Naukluft National Park and has its own exclusive gate into the park. That means you can reach the dunes early without queuing at Sesriem with the day visitors.

There are just 11 chalets, each with a private plunge pool and a star bed on an elevated deck, where you can sleep under the sky on clear nights. The design is clean and light, with soft colors that echo the desert. The lodge is run by Wilderness, one of the most respected safari companies in Africa and rates are fully inclusive.

It suits couples who want to see the dunes at their best, at sunrise and then come back to a beautiful room and a pool. It suits less well couples on a budget, since rates are high, or those who want a more remote, stargazing-focused stay away from the park. Two or three nights is ideal.

Highlights at a glance

  • Private gate into the Sossusvlei area
  • 11 chalets with private plunge pools
  • Star beds on elevated decks
  • Fully inclusive rates
  • Own airstrip on the Kulala reserve

Why Couples Love Little Kulala

Access is the first reason. The exclusive gate into the park lets you reach Sossusvlei and Deadvlei ahead of the crowds, when the light is soft and the dunes are almost empty. Climbing a dune at sunrise and walking among the dead camelthorn trees of Deadvlei without crowds is a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

The star beds are the second. Each chalet has an elevated deck with a bed you can sleep on under the open sky. With almost no light pollution, the Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon. If the wind picks up, the bed rolls under cover.

The third is the setting. The reserve is open, with views across gravel plains to the dunes and mountains. Oryx and springbok wander past and sunsets turn the whole landscape orange and pink.

Chalets to Book

Little Kulala has 11 chalets, with a maximum of 22 guests. All are similar in style and comfort, so the choice is mostly about position.

Each chalet has a private plunge pool, a shaded deck and access to a sleep-out or star bed on the elevated sala. Interiors are bright and calm, with natural textures and large windows facing the desert.

For a honeymoon, ask for a chalet at the edge of the camp for more privacy and an uninterrupted view. Mention the honeymoon when you book; the team can arrange a private dinner on your deck or a special sundowner. Nights are cold in winter, from about June to August, so if you plan to use the star bed, bring a warm layer even though bedding is provided.

Food, Drink and Camp Life

Rates are fully inclusive, so meals, drinks and activities are covered. Meals are served in the main area, which has a pool, a bar and views over the plains. You can also arrange private sundowners or suppers on the rooftop of the main area, which is a lovely way to watch the sky change.

The food is fresh and generous, with Namibian and southern African dishes alongside lighter options. Picnic breakfasts are often packed for early trips to the dunes, so you can eat in the shade of a camelthorn tree.

The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with small groups and attentive guides. After a busy morning, most couples spend the afternoon in their plunge pool or napping before the evening drive.

Things to Do

Activities are included, with a few extras.

  • Guided trips to Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and Sesriem Canyon via the private gate.
  • Nature drives and guided walks on the Kulala reserve, looking for oryx, springbok, ostrich and small desert creatures.
  • Night walks with UV torches to find scorpions.
  • E-biking and quad biking.
  • Stargazing from camp or the star beds.

Hot-air balloon flights launch near Sesriem and cost extra, but floating over the dunes at sunrise is worth the splurge. Book early in peak months. Bring sunscreen, a hat and sturdy shoes for the dunes. The sand gets very hot by midday, so plan dune climbs for early morning.

Getting There

The reserve has its own airstrip, which makes flying in the easiest option. Light-aircraft flights from Windhoek take about an hour and Wilderness Air connects Little Kulala with other Wilderness camps in Namibia. Luggage limits are strict, so pack soft bags.

By road, the drive from Windhoek takes five to six hours on a mix of tar and gravel. Many couples self-drive as part of a Namibia itinerary. Leave early, fill up with fuel when you can and drive slowly on gravel.

Little Kulala pairs well with Swakopmund, Damaraland and Etosha on a classic route. Two or three nights here lets you do a dune morning, a quieter day on the reserve and a night on the star bed.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want the best access to the dunes with luxury, yes. The private gate is a real advantage, the chalets are lovely and the star beds are a highlight. The fully inclusive rate removes most extra costs.

The trade-off is price. Rates are high, particularly in peak season. Couples on a tighter budget can choose a lodge near the Sesriem gate for a fraction of the cost and still reach the dunes early. Those who prioritize stargazing and design might prefer &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, which has an observatory but is further from the park. If you want to see Deadvlei almost alone and then fall asleep under the stars, Little Kulala is the one.
