Getting Between Stops
This route uses two domestic flights. Sydney to Ayers Rock (AYQ) takes about three and a half hours, with direct flights on most days. From Ayers Rock to Cairns (CNS), check whether a direct flight runs on your dates. If not, connect through Sydney or Brisbane and expect most of a day in transit.
In Sydney, use the ferries, trains and taxis. Do not rent a car. At Uluru, the free resort shuttle covers the airport and resort, while tours and rental cars handle the national park. Rent a car at Ayers Rock Airport if you want to set your own sunrise schedule.
In Port Douglas, most lodges arrange transfers from Cairns. A rental car is useful for Mossman Gorge, the Daintree and Cape Tribulation, but reef trips include hotel pickups. Australia drives on the left.
Where to Stay
In Sydney, stay near the harbor in The Rocks or Circular Quay so you can walk to the ferries, the Opera House and the best restaurants. Park Hyatt Sydney is the famous splurge, right on the water beneath the bridge.
At Uluru, every hotel except Longitude 131° is part of Ayers Rock Resort. Sails in the Desert is the most comfortable of these, with a pool and restaurants. Longitude 131° is all inclusive and one of the most expensive hotels in Australia, but it is a once-in-a-lifetime stay.
In Port Douglas, pick the style you want for five nights. Silky Oaks Lodge is rainforest seclusion near Mossman. Thala Beach Nature Reserve is on a quiet headland south of town. Niramaya Villas & Spa is close to Four Mile Beach and Macrossan Street.
When to Go
May to October is the best window. The north is in its dry season, with lower humidity and calmer seas. Uluru has warm days and cold nights. September and early October are the sweet spot, when Sydney is warming up, the outback is still pleasant and reef visibility is often at its best.
November to April is the wet season in tropical Queensland. It brings heat, humidity, heavy rain and the chance of cyclones. It is also stinger season, when box jellyfish and Irukandji are in coastal waters. Swim inside stinger nets on patrolled beaches and wear a stinger suit on reef trips.
Uluru is very hot in summer, so plan walks for early morning. June and July bring frosty dawns, which are perfectly manageable with a warm jacket.
What It Costs
This is a pricey route because Uluru and Port Douglas have limited competition. As an approximate guide, good harbor hotels in Sydney cost about $300 to $600 a night for two, with Park Hyatt Sydney starting around $850. At Uluru, Sails in the Desert costs much less than Longitude 131°, which starts around $2,400 a night with meals and activities included.
In Port Douglas, expect about $450 to $1,000 a night for the lodges named here.
Add two domestic flights, a park pass for Uluru, a stargazing dinner, an outer reef day trip and a Daintree cruise. The BridgeClimb in Sydney is another splurge many couples happily pay for. Book Uluru early, since its hotels and dinners fill quickly.
Tips for the Two of You
Australia's sun is intense, even in winter. Pack high-SPF reef-safe sunscreen, hats and sunglasses for each of you. At Uluru, bring a fly net for your face in the warmer months, a warm jacket for dawn and dusk and comfortable walking shoes.
In tropical Queensland, never swim in rivers, creeks or estuaries unless a sign says it is safe. Saltwater crocodiles live there. On the coast, swim only between the flags or inside stinger nets.
The route works for different tastes. One of you can scuba dive on the reef while the other snorkels; one can join a sunrise camel ride at Uluru while the other sleeps in. In Sydney, one partner might do the BridgeClimb while the other explores the gallery or the botanic garden. Meet up for dinner by the water.
Make It Shorter or Longer
With nine or ten days, drop Uluru and spend four nights in Sydney and five in Port Douglas, adding one more slow day by the pool. You save a flight and a good deal of money.
With two weeks, add two or three nights at a Great Barrier Reef island. Lizard Island is a short light-aircraft flight from Cairns and one of the most exclusive stays in Australia. The Whitsunday Islands, with Whitehaven Beach, are another option, reached through Hamilton Island.
With three weeks, add Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road before Sydney, or a few nights in Tasmania for hiking and oysters. Keep at least one slow stretch of three or more nights in the same place so the trip does not become a blur of airports.
