At a glance

Three nights in Newport, three on Martha's Vineyard and four on Nantucket, traveling by car, ferry and bike. It suits couples who want a classic New England summer of sailing, seafood and walkable harbor towns without a long-haul flight. June and September are the sweet spots, with July and August busiest.

This 11-day New England honeymoon strings together three of the prettiest summer places on the Atlantic coast. You start with three nights in Newport, Rhode Island, walking the Cliff Walk past Gilded Age mansions and sailing Narragansett Bay. Then you drive about an hour and a half to Woods Hole and take the ferry to Martha's Vineyard for three nights of clay cliffs, harbor sunsets and bike paths. The trip ends with four nights on Nantucket, the most polished and remote of the three, where you can park the bikes outside a rose-covered cottage and stay put.

The route suits couples who would rather ride a ferry than board a long-haul flight. Once you reach the islands, you do not need a car, since buses, bikes and your feet cover everything.

Go in June or September. The weather is mild, the crowds are thinner than in high summer and September's ocean is often warmer than June's. July and August are lively and expensive. From November to April, many inns and restaurants on both islands close.

Day by day

Days 1–3: Newport

Fly into Providence (PVD), about 40 minutes from Newport, or Boston (BOS), about an hour and a half. Rent a car for the first leg. Castle Hill Inn, on a private point at the mouth of the harbor, is the special-occasion choice, with Adirondack chairs facing the sunset. The Chanler at Cliff Walk and The Vanderbilt are elegant alternatives in town.

On day two, walk the Cliff Walk at sunrise, before the day-trippers, then tour The Breakers and Marble House. In the afternoon, sail Narragansett Bay on a classic schooner.

On day three, bike or drive Ocean Drive and stop at Brenton Point for the views. Eat oysters and chowder on Bowen's Wharf. Drinks on the Castle Hill lawn as the sun sets over the bay is the romantic moment of Newport. Have dinner on Thames Street and turn in early for the ferry.

Days 4–6: Martha's Vineyard

Drive about an hour and a half to Woods Hole on day four. Return the rental car at an agency in nearby Falmouth and take the 45-minute ferry to Vineyard Haven as foot passengers. Walk-on tickets do not need reservations. A car would need one, booked far ahead.

Base yourselves in Edgartown, where white clapboard streets lead to the harbor. The Charlotte Inn is a small, antique-filled inn on a quiet side street. The Harbor View Hotel overlooks the lighthouse.

On day five, rent bikes and ride to Oak Bluffs to see the gingerbread cottages, then take the tiny ferry to Chappaquiddick for a quiet beach. On day six, take the bus or a taxi up-island to the clay cliffs at Aquinnah, buy a picnic at a farm stand and end the day in Menemsha. Watching the sun drop into the water from the fishing harbor, with a lobster dinner from the docks, is the romantic moment of the Vineyard.

Days 7–11: Nantucket

Cross to Nantucket on day seven. In summer, check for a seasonal inter-island ferry from Oak Bluffs. Otherwise, take the ferry back to Woods Hole, a taxi of about 40 minutes to Hyannis and a fast ferry of about an hour to Nantucket. It takes most of a day, so travel light. As your boat rounds Brant Point, toss a penny overboard. Local tradition says you will return.

This is the splurge. White Elephant sits on the harbor in town. The Wauwinet, a Relais & Châteaux inn eight miles out between the harbor and the Atlantic, is the quiet romantic choice and open seasonally.

On day eight, walk the 'Sconset Bluff Walk past rose-covered cottages. On day nine, join an over-sand trip to Great Point to see the lighthouse and seals. Keep day ten slow, then bike to Madaket Beach for sunset. On day eleven, fly home from Nantucket (ACK) or take the ferry to Hyannis and a bus to Boston.

Getting Between Stops

Fly into Providence (PVD) or Boston (BOS) and home from Nantucket (ACK) or Boston. You need a car only for Newport and the drive to the ferry.

Newport to Woods Hole is about an hour and a half by car. The Steamship Authority ferry from Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven takes about 45 minutes and runs year-round. Walk-on passengers do not need reservations.

Getting from the Vineyard to Nantucket is the tricky leg. A seasonal inter-island passenger ferry has run between Oak Bluffs and Nantucket in summer, so check schedules for your dates. Outside that season, take the ferry back to Woods Hole, take a taxi about 40 minutes to Hyannis and take the high-speed ferry, about an hour, to Nantucket. Small planes also connect the islands with Boston, though fog can delay them. Arrange a one-way rental that you can return in Falmouth, near Woods Hole, before you board.

Where to Stay

In Newport, Castle Hill Inn is the waterfront classic on its own point. The Chanler at Cliff Walk is a mansion hotel at the start of the Cliff Walk. The Vanderbilt, part of Auberge Resorts, is steps from Thames Street restaurants.

On Martha's Vineyard, Edgartown is the honeymoon base. The Charlotte Inn is small, quiet and full of antiques. The Harbor View Hotel overlooks the lighthouse and the Chappaquiddick channel. Oak Bluffs is livelier and less formal.

On Nantucket, White Elephant puts you on the harbor a short walk from Main Street. The Wauwinet is secluded, with two beaches and a free shuttle into town. Historic inns in former captains' houses are often cheaper and still walkable.

In July and August, expect top hotels on Nantucket to run about $800 to well over $1,500 a night (approximate). Newport and Edgartown run a little less.

When to Go

June and September are the best months for most couples. Days are mild, crowds are thinner and rates are lower than in midsummer. September is often the local favorite, since the water holds its summer warmth after Labor Day.

July and August are peak season, with warm days in the 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit, swimmable water and everything open. Ferries fill, rates jump and the towns get busy, especially on weekends and around July 4.

Late May and early October are pretty but cool, with some seasonal businesses not yet open or starting to close. From November to April, much of both islands shuts and Newport turns quiet and windy. Fog can roll in at any time of year, delaying small planes, so leave a buffer before flights home.

Budget and Booking

Book Nantucket first, since its best inns sell out early for summer. Then book Edgartown, Newport and your flights. Reserve a car on the ferry only if you truly need it, since it is expensive and spaces sell out months ahead.

As an approximate guide, expect $400 to $1,200 a night for good inns and harbor hotels, with Nantucket's top hotels higher in July and August. Weekdays are cheaper than weekends, especially in Newport. Ferries, bikes and island buses are inexpensive compared with the rooms.

Many inns have minimum stays of two or three nights in summer, which this route already allows for. Mention your honeymoon when you book. Small inns often leave a bottle or a treat in the room and may help with dinner reservations.

Staying Comfortable and Safe

Atlantic water is cool even in summer and south-facing beaches can have strong surf and rip currents. Swim at lifeguarded beaches and watch the flags.

On the islands, ticks are common in tall grass and on trails. Use repellent, wear long pants on walks through brush and check each other at night. Tick-borne illnesses, including Lyme disease, are present.

Wear helmets when you bike and use lights at dusk, since island roads can be narrow and busy in summer. Bring a warm layer each for evenings and boat rides, which can be chilly even in July. On the Cliff Walk, some southern sections are rough and rocky, so wear proper shoes. Dress is relaxed, though Newport and Nantucket's best dining rooms lean smart casual for both of you.

Make It Shorter or Longer

For an 8-day trip, drop Newport and fly into Boston. Spend three nights on Martha's Vineyard and four on Nantucket.

For 13 to 14 days, add two nights in Boston at the start, or add three nights in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park after Nantucket, flying from Boston to Bangor. Maine brings granite, pine forests and lobster pounds.

Couples who want a single base can spend the whole trip on Nantucket, with a day trip to the Vineyard if the inter-island ferry is running. Another option is splitting Nantucket between town and 'Sconset or The Wauwinet, which gives you walkable dinners and quiet nights in one stay.

FAQ

Planning this trip

Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket for a honeymoon?

Both, if you have time. Martha's Vineyard is bigger and more varied, with six towns, farms and clay cliffs. Nantucket is smaller, more polished and more remote, with one main town and cobbled streets. This route uses the Vineyard first and Nantucket as the splurge finale.

Do we need a car on Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket?

No. Both islands have buses, bike paths, taxis and walkable towns. Bringing a car on the ferry is expensive and spaces sell out. Rent bikes or an electric bike for a few days instead. Use a car only for Newport and the drive to the ferry.

How do you get from Martha's Vineyard to Nantucket?

In summer, check for a seasonal inter-island passenger ferry. Otherwise, take the ferry back to Woods Hole, go to Hyannis on Cape Cod and catch a ferry to Nantucket. Small planes also connect via Boston. Plan most of a day for the trip.

When is the best time for a New England islands honeymoon?

June and September. Both have mild weather and fewer crowds than July and August. September is often the best month for swimming, since the ocean holds its summer warmth. From November to April, many inns, restaurants and ferries close or cut back.

Is Newport worth adding to a Cape and islands trip?

Yes. It is only an hour and a half from the Woods Hole ferry and adds something the islands lack: Gilded Age mansions, the Cliff Walk and sailing on Narragansett Bay. It also has a good choice of airports, from Providence to Boston.
