Three nights in Mexico City, three in San Miguel de Allende and five on the gated Punta Mita peninsula north of Puerto Vallarta. It suits couples who want culture and food in the highlands before a long, quiet luxury beach finish with whales in winter. Go November through April, when the highlands are dry and Banderas Bay is at its best.

This 12-day Mexico honeymoon pairs two highland stops with a long beach finish: three nights in Mexico City, three in San Miguel de Allende and five at Punta Mita on the Pacific. It is built for couples who want museums, rooftop dinners and cobblestone walks, followed by nearly a week of doing very little in a beautiful place.

Mexico City brings the energy: Frida Kahlo's house, Teotihuacán at sunrise and some of the best restaurants in the Americas. San Miguel de Allende slows things down, with courtyard coffee, galleries and sunsets facing the pink Parroquia. Punta Mita is the splurge and the slow stretch, a gated peninsula of casitas, golf and spa days with Sayulita's taco stands a short drive away.

Go between November and April. The highlands are dry and sunny, nights are cool and humpback whales fill Banderas Bay from roughly December to March. Expect one road transfer and one flight.

Day by day

Days 1–3: Mexico City

Land at Mexico City International Airport (MEX) and take an authorized taxi or ride-hailing car to Polanco, Roma Norte or Condesa, 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. Polanco suits this route well, with calm streets near Chapultepec Park and the big museums. Las Alcobas is an intimate luxury hotel on a quiet street there.

Take day one slowly. At 7,300 feet, alcohol hits harder, so start with a walk and an early dinner.

On day two, book a sunrise balloon flight over Teotihuacán. Floating over the pyramids at first light is the romantic moment here. Return for a seafood lunch at Contramar and an evening walk through Condesa.

On day three, visit Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul in Coyoacán, with tickets bought ahead. If you prefer architecture, book a tour of Casa Luis Barragán instead. Celebrate with a tasting menu in Polanco, the kind of dinner to reserve weeks in advance. Remember that many museums close on Mondays.

Days 4–6: San Miguel de Allende

Hire a private driver for the road north, about three and a half to four hours. Leave in the morning so you arrive in daylight. The town has no airport, so the road is the simplest link from Mexico City.

Stay within a few blocks of El Jardín, since the hills are steep and the cobblestones polished. The Rosewood San Miguel de Allende has gardens, a spa and a rooftop bar facing the Parroquia. Casa de Sierra Nevada, a collection of restored houses near the center, is a long-standing favorite. Ask for a terrace with a view of the church.

On day five, rise early for a dawn balloon flight over the valley, then spend the afternoon browsing galleries at Fábrica La Aurora. On day six, soak in the warm pools at La Gruta or have a long lunch at a highland vineyard. Each evening, take a drink to a rooftop as the Parroquia glows pink at sunset. That view is the image most couples take home. Pack layers, as nights can be chilly.

Days 7–12: Punta Mita

Fly from Querétaro (QRO), about 1 hour 15 minutes from town, or Bajío/León (BJX), about 1.5 hours, to Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR). Direct routes between these airports are limited, so many couples connect through Mexico City. From PVR, the coastal drive to Punta Mita takes about 45 minutes.

This is your splurge. Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita spreads red-tiled casitas and plunge-pool suites down to the beach, with access to two Jack Nicklaus Signature courses including the Tail of the Whale island green. Imanta Punta de Mita, outside the gates on a jungle reserve, has about a dozen stone casas and a private beach.

Give yourselves two full days with nothing booked. Then mix in a winter whale-watching trip in Banderas Bay, a snorkel day at the Marietas Islands or a surf lesson for two. One of you might golf while the other takes a spa morning, or do both together. Spend an afternoon in Sayulita and San Pancho for tacos and shops.

For the final night, book Imanta's torchlit Cliff dinner if you can. On day twelve, fly home from PVR, which has nonstops to many US cities.

Getting Between Stops

Mexico City to San Miguel de Allende is best done with a private driver, about three and a half to four hours. Leave after breakfast so the whole drive is in daylight. Some couples break it with lunch in Querétaro.

San Miguel to Punta Mita is the longest travel day. Arrange a shuttle to Querétaro (QRO) or Bajío/León (BJX), then fly to Puerto Vallarta (PVR), often via Mexico City. Book a midday flight so you arrive at the resort before dark. The alternative is to drive back to Mexico City and fly MEX to PVR, which can make sense if the connection times are better.

From PVR, arrange a private transfer through your resort. The arrivals hall can be busy with timeshare sellers, so walk straight to your driver. Inside the gated peninsula, resorts provide carts and shuttles.

Where to Stay

In Mexico City, choose Polanco for calm luxury, Roma Norte or Condesa for walkable streets and casual restaurants. The Four Seasons Mexico City on Paseo de la Reforma wraps around a garden courtyard. Ask for a room facing an inner courtyard if street noise bothers you.

In San Miguel de Allende, the town's specialty is boutique hotels in colonial mansions, with courtyards, fireplaces and rooftop terraces. The Rosewood is the larger luxury choice. Pick a room with heating or a fireplace for December and January nights.

At Punta Mita, lodging is small and very high-end. Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita is the classic, family-friendly but deeply romantic in the right suite. Imanta Punta de Mita is smaller and more secluded. For lower prices, look at boutique hotels in nearby Sayulita or villas within the Punta Mita development.

When to Go

November through April is the best window for all three stops. Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende are dry and sunny, with highs in the 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit. Nights in December and January can drop close to freezing in San Miguel. Pack a warm layer.

Punta Mita is sunny and dry in the same months, with low humidity. Humpback whales fill Banderas Bay from roughly December through March, which makes those months the most rewarding and most popular. Book resorts and whale tours well ahead.

May is warm and still mostly dry, a good value month. From June through October, the rainy season brings afternoon storms to the highlands and heat, humidity and hurricane risk to the coast, typically peaking from August to October. Day of the Dead in early November is popular in both cities and books up early.

Budget and Booking

This is a luxury itinerary with a heavy final chapter. As an approximate guide, a good boutique or luxury hotel in Mexico City and San Miguel runs from about $350 to $700 a night for two. Punta Mita's resorts typically cost well over $1,000 a night in high season. Food in the cities is excellent value even at the top end.

Book early for the Teotihuacán and San Miguel balloon flights, Casa Azul tickets and tasting menus. At Punta Mita, reserve whale tours, golf tee times and special dinners when you book the room, since capacity is limited in high season.

US dollars are widely accepted at Punta Mita, but carry pesos for village restaurants, taxis and tips. Ask your resort about honeymoon touches when you book.

Staying Comfortable and Safe

Plan for altitude. Mexico City is at 7,300 feet and San Miguel de Allende at 6,200, so drink water and go light on alcohol for the first day or two.

In Mexico City, use ride-hailing apps or authorized taxis rather than street cabs, especially at night. Guanajuato state, where San Miguel sits, carries a Level 3 advisory from the State Department. Travel to and from town only in daylight, use arranged drivers and recheck the advisory the week you fly. The town itself is easy to walk.

Bring shoes with grip for San Miguel's steep cobblestones for both of you. At Punta Mita, pack reef-safe sunscreen for snorkeling and the Marietas. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Mexico, since mosquitoes on the coast can carry dengue. Consider travel insurance for summer and early fall trips.

Make It Shorter or Longer

For a 9-day trip, keep two nights in Mexico City, two in San Miguel and four at Punta Mita. The rhythm still works, though the travel days will feel closer together.

Couples with a week should pick two stops. Mexico City and Punta Mita make a clean pair, linked by a flight of about an hour and a half. San Miguel and Punta Mita work too, but the connecting flight takes more planning.

With 14 days, add a night in the city of Guanajuato near San Miguel for its colorful hillside streets, or stretch Punta Mita to six or seven nights. Many couples also add a night in Puerto Vallarta's old town at the end, about an hour from Punta Mita, for its malecón and hillside restaurants. Hacienda San Angel, on the hill behind the cathedral, is a romantic choice there.

FAQ

Planning this trip

How do we get from San Miguel de Allende to Punta Mita?

Take a shuttle to Querétaro (QRO) or Bajío/León (BJX), then fly to Puerto Vallarta (PVR), usually connecting in Mexico City. From PVR, Punta Mita is about 45 minutes by car. Alternatively, drive back to Mexico City and fly from there. Plan the full day for this leg and arrive before dark.

Is San Miguel de Allende safe for a honeymoon?

The town itself is popular and walkable, but Guanajuato state carries a Level 3 State Department advisory. Most couples arrange private transfers, travel only in daylight and stay in the historic center. Read the latest advisory before booking and again the week you travel.

When can we see whales at Punta Mita?

Humpback whales usually fill Banderas Bay from roughly December through March. Boat trips leave from the Punta Mita area and resorts can book them for you. January and February are often the most reliable months. Book early, since high-season capacity is limited.

Which Punta Mita resort suits honeymooners best?

Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita offers casitas and plunge-pool suites with golf and a full spa, though it welcomes families. Imanta Punta de Mita is smaller and more secluded, with about a dozen stone casas on a jungle reserve. Couples who want privacy above all lean toward Imanta.

Can we do this route in reverse?

You can, but we recommend ending at the beach. Arriving at Punta Mita after the highlands lets you rest before flying home. The beach finish is when most couples finally slow down. Reversing it works best if your flight times force a Puerto Vallarta arrival.
