At a glance

Two nights in Kuala Lumpur for food and skyline, five in Sabah on Borneo split between a river lodge on the Kinabatangan and an island resort off Kota Kinabalu, then four slow nights on Langkawi's rainforest coast. It suits couples who want real wildlife and real beach time in one trip. Go from February to April, when Sabah and Langkawi are both at their best.

Malaysia gives you two honeymoons in one country. On the peninsula and its islands, you get food, cities and long beaches. On Borneo, a short flight east, you get some of the oldest rainforest on earth and animals you will not see anywhere else in the wild.

This route starts with two nights in Kuala Lumpur, which is the right amount to recover from the flight, eat well and see the Petronas Towers lit up at night.

Next comes Sabah, the Malaysian state on the northern tip of Borneo. You fly to Sandakan for two nights at a lodge on the Kinabatangan River, where boat trips at dawn and dusk turn up proboscis monkeys, hornbills and, with luck, wild orangutans. Then you stop at Sepilok to see rescued orangutans before flying to Kota Kinabalu for three nights on an island in a marine park.

The last four nights are on Langkawi, where resorts sit among old rainforest on quiet bays. It is your slow stretch.

Day by day

Days 1–2: Kuala Lumpur

Land at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). The KLIA Ekspres train reaches KL Sentral in about 28 minutes, or a car takes about an hour to the KLCC area. Check in, swim and eat something simple.

On day 2, go to Batu Caves before the heat and climb the 272 rainbow-painted steps to the limestone cave temple. Rest at your hotel through the afternoon. In the evening, walk through KLCC Park as the Petronas Towers light up, then take a taxi to Jalan Alor in Bukit Bintang for a street food dinner of satay, grilled fish and fresh fruit. Watching the towers glow from the park with the fountains running is the romantic moment of KL.

If you have energy, end with a drink at a rooftop bar facing the towers. Pack a small bag for Borneo and leave anything you will not need with your hotel if you are returning through KL.

Days 3–4: Kinabatangan River, Sabah

Fly from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan (SDK) on day 3, roughly two and a half to three hours. Carry your passports, since they are checked again on arrival in Sabah. Your lodge driver takes you to the Kinabatangan River, about two to three hours by road, through oil palm country that gives way to forest.

At dusk, take your first boat trip. Proboscis monkeys gather in the riverside trees to sleep, hornbills fly overhead and the light turns gold on the water. That first river cruise, with the jungle going quiet around you, is the romantic moment of Borneo.

On day 4, go out again at dawn, when birds are most active. Rest at midday, then take a guided forest walk or a second evening cruise. Some lodges run night walks for frogs, tarsiers and sleeping birds. Wild orangutans and Bornean elephants are seen here at times, though nothing is guaranteed. A good guide makes all the difference.

Days 5–7: Sepilok and Gaya Island

Take a final dawn cruise on day 5, then drive back toward Sandakan. Stop at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre for one of the daily feedings, when young orangutans swing in from the forest. The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre is next door. Then fly from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu (BKI), under an hour. Take a short boat to Gaya Island in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park.

Day 6 is for doing very little. Swim, snorkel the reef in front of your resort and nap through the afternoon. At sunset, watch the sky turn orange behind the islands of the marine park.

On day 7, take a boat to the smaller islands nearby for snorkeling, or join a guided mangrove walk on Gaya itself. If the sky is clear in the early morning, look east for the outline of Mount Kinabalu. Make tonight a long dinner by the water.

Days 8–11: Langkawi

Fly from Kota Kinabalu to Langkawi (LGK) on day 8, usually connecting in Kuala Lumpur. It is a long travel day, so book a morning departure. Langkawi's airport is about 40 minutes from Datai Bay.

On day 9, walk the rainforest trails around your resort with a naturalist in the early morning, when dusky leaf monkeys and hornbills are out. Spend the afternoon on the beach.

On day 10, take a boat through the mangroves of the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, among limestone cliffs and eagles. Or ride the SkyCab up Gunung Mat Cincang and walk the curved Sky Bridge above the forest. In the evening, drive to Pantai Cenang to watch the sunset over the Andaman Sea with dinner on the sand.

Keep day 11 free and make it your splurge. Book a couples spa treatment and a private dinner on the beach. A table under the trees at Datai Bay, with the sea in front and the forest behind, is the romantic moment of Langkawi.

Getting Between Stops

Kuala Lumpur is the hub for every flight on this route. KL to Sandakan takes roughly two and a half to three hours. Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu takes under an hour. Kota Kinabalu to Langkawi usually means connecting in KL, so expect most of a day. Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Batik Air fly these routes.

In Sabah, book a reputable lodge or tour operator to handle the road transfers and boats. Rural roads are slow and poorly lit, so avoid driving after dark. Boats to Gaya Island leave from the jetty in Kota Kinabalu and take about 15 minutes.

Grab works well in Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu and Langkawi. On Langkawi, renting a car for a day is the easiest way to explore. Traffic drives on the left.

Where to Stay

In Kuala Lumpur, stay in the KLCC area by the Petronas Towers. Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur sits beside the park and Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur is next to the towers. The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, a restored 1930s building, has colonial charm.

On the Kinabatangan, lodges near Sukau and Bilit range from rustic to comfortable, with meals and boat trips included. Choose one with small boats and experienced guides.

Off Kota Kinabalu, Gaya Island Resort and Bunga Raya Island Resort offer villas among the trees above quiet bays. Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, on the coast near the airport, is an easier alternative.

On Langkawi, The Datai Langkawi has villas in old rainforest above Datai Bay and nature walks with resident naturalists. Four Seasons Resort Langkawi sits on the long beach at Tanjung Rhu.

When to Go

February to April is the best overlap. Langkawi's dry season runs from about December to March, with April hotter but often fine. Sabah's west coast and islands are usually most settled from about March to September. February and March are often among the driest months around Kota Kinabalu.

From about June to October, the southwest monsoon brings regular heavy rain to Langkawi. From roughly October to January, Sabah sees heavier rains and choppier seas, though the river lodges stay open and wildlife can be closer to the banks.

Kuala Lumpur is hot and humid all year, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Plan around Sabah and Langkawi rather than the city. Ramadan and the holidays that follow change opening hours in places.

Budget and Booking

Plan on roughly $250–450 a night for two in a top Kuala Lumpur hotel, which is good value by world standards. Kinabatangan lodges usually sell packages with meals and boat trips, often around $250–500 a night for two. Gaya Island resorts run roughly $300–600 and The Datai Langkawi often $700–900 or more. All figures are approximate.

Book the Kinabatangan lodge and The Datai first, since both have limited rooms. Then build the domestic flights around them.

Other costs include the Sepilok and sun bear centers, boat transfers to Gaya, snorkel trips, the Kilim mangrove boat, the SkyCab and spa treatments. Hawker food in KL and Kota Kinabalu is cheap and excellent, so you can save your splurges for the resorts.

Make It Shorter or Longer

For nine days, drop Gaya Island. Spend two nights in KL, two on the Kinabatangan with Sepilok on the way out and four on Langkawi.

With two weeks, add two nights at Kinabalu Park or a guided climb of Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia's highest peak. The climb needs a good fitness level and an overnight at a mountain rest house, so book well ahead.

Another good addition is two nights in George Town on Penang, a short flight or ferry from Langkawi. Its shophouse lanes, temples and street food make a lively change of pace. Or add Melaka, about an hour and a half from Kuala Lumpur, for its colonial streets and riverside cafes.

Honeymoon Tips

In the rainforest, wear long, light clothes, closed shoes and leech socks if your lodge offers them. Leeches are harmless but startling. Bring binoculars and a rain jacket.

Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country. At mosques, both of you need covered arms and legs and women cover their hair; robes are usually provided. Away from beaches, dress modestly and keep affection low-key. Alcohol is widely available in resorts and tourist areas. Langkawi is duty-free.

Dengue occurs in Malaysia and malaria is present in parts of rural Borneo. Ask a travel clinic about the Kinabatangan and use repellent at dawn and dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before booking. Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website before you book.

FAQ

Planning this trip

Will we see orangutans in Sabah?

At Sepilok, almost certainly, since rescued orangutans visit the feeding platform most days. On the Kinabatangan River, wild orangutans are seen at times but never guaranteed. Proboscis monkeys, macaques and hornbills are seen on most boat trips. A small boat with an experienced guide improves your chances.

How do we get from Borneo to Langkawi?

Fly from Kota Kinabalu (BKI) to Langkawi (LGK), usually connecting in Kuala Lumpur. Allow most of a day. Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Batik Air fly the legs. Book a morning departure so you reach Langkawi in time for an evening swim.

Is the Kinabatangan River comfortable enough for a honeymoon?

Yes, if you choose well. Lodges range from rustic to comfortable, with air conditioning or fans, private bathrooms and simple, good food. They are not luxury resorts, which is why this route pairs two nights on the river with island resorts on Gaya and Langkawi.

Why Langkawi rather than another Malaysian island?

Langkawi has the strongest choice of honeymoon resorts in Malaysia, including The Datai Langkawi and Four Seasons Resort Langkawi, plus easy flights from Kuala Lumpur. Its best weather from about December to March also fits a winter trip, when the east coast islands such as the Perhentians are largely closed.

When is the best time for this Malaysia route?

February to April. Langkawi is dry or mostly dry, Sabah's islands and coast are settled and the river lodges are open. Kuala Lumpur is warm and humid all year. Avoid June to October if beach time on Langkawi matters most to you.
