Sublime Samaná is the stylish beach hotel of the Samaná Peninsula: a small, design-led property on Playa Cosón, a long and often near-empty beach a few minutes west of Las Terrenas. You get a suite the size of an apartment, a long pool that winds through the gardens toward the sand and a quiet stretch of Atlantic coast backed by green hills.

It suits couples who want a beach honeymoon that feels nothing like Punta Cana. There are no towers and no wristbands. Meals are à la carte and the suites have full kitchens, so you can mix dinners at the hotel with fresh fish from Las Terrenas and nights out in town. Whale season in Samaná Bay, waterfalls in the hills and boat trips to Los Haitises National Park are all within reach.

Go in with clear expectations. Reviews praise the beach and the space but are mixed on upkeep and on how many restaurants are open at quieter times. Many of the units are privately owned residences, so the feel is part hotel, part condo. For the price, though, few places on the peninsula give you this much room by the sea.

Highlights at a glance

  • Long, quiet Playa Cosón at the doorstep
  • Suites of around 1,050 square feet with full kitchens
  • A long garden pool leading toward the beach
  • Open-air beach spa with a couples cabin
  • Short drive to Las Terrenas restaurants

Why Couples Choose Sublime Samaná

The beach does most of the work. Playa Cosón runs for miles with palms leaning over the sand and even in high season you can walk a long way without meeting anyone. Sunsets come down over the bay to the west.

The hotel is modern and simple, with white walls and wood, which lets the setting stand out. Small local touches, such as a coconut on arrival, keep it from feeling generic. Because it is a short drive from Las Terrenas, you can split your days between doing nothing on Cosón and eating in the town's beach restaurants, many of them French- and Italian-run. It is a good base for couples who want both quiet and some life nearby.

Suites to Book

Every suite has a living and dining area, a large private terrace and a full kitchen with Viking appliances.

  • One-Bedroom Suites, around 1,050 square feet, are the entry category and plenty for two. Many have balconies with full-size hot tubs, but not all face the ocean.
  • Larger two- and three-bedroom casitas sit along the garden path near the beach, some with rooftop terraces and private hot tubs.

For a honeymoon, ask specifically for an ocean-view One-Bedroom Suite with a hot tub on the balcony. If you want a rooftop to yourselves and you are traveling with another couple, a casita can be good value when split. Confirm the view in writing when you book.

Food, Drink and the Spa

The hotel has two restaurants when both are running. The Bistro serves breakfast and dinner with a Dominican-inspired Mediterranean menu built around local seafood. The Beachside Grill is open-air on the sand, with grilled mahi-mahi, ceviche, burgers and pasta. There is a full bar and room service.

The spa is small and rustic, a set of open-air cabins on the beach with a couples cabin and a rain shower. Treatments use coconut as a signature ingredient. It is pleasant rather than lavish. With a full kitchen in your suite, a market run in Las Terrenas for fruit, cheese and wine makes for easy, cheap breakfasts on the terrace.

Why guests fall for it

Things to Do

The peninsula rewards couples who like to get out.

  • Ride or hike to El Limón waterfall in the hills.
  • Take a boat across Samaná Bay to the mangroves and caves of Los Haitises National Park.
  • From mid-January to March, watch humpback whales in Samaná Bay.
  • Drive east to Playa Rincón or Playa Frontón for wilder beaches.
  • Kayak or paddleboard off Cosón in calm morning water.

The Atlantic here can have strong waves and rip currents, especially in winter, so swim where it is calm and ask staff about conditions. Mosquitoes and dengue occur in the area, so use repellent and if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.

Getting There

The closest airport is Samaná El Catey International (AZS), about 45 minutes away, with limited seasonal flights. Many couples fly into Santo Domingo (SDQ) instead, which has far more US nonstops and drive about two and a half hours on the highway. Punta Cana (PUJ) is a longer transfer.

Arrange a private transfer through the hotel or a reliable driver. A rental car is useful for exploring the peninsula, but roads are steep and winding in places and driving at night is not recommended. In Las Terrenas, taxis and motoconchos are easy to find by day; use a booked taxi after dark.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who value space and a quiet beach over polish, yes. The suites are huge for the money and Playa Cosón is one of the most beautiful beaches in the country.

It is not for everyone. Recent reviews are mixed on maintenance and on how many dining options are open in low season and service can feel more relaxed than at a big resort. Couples who want a fully staffed luxury experience or an all-inclusive should look at Punta Cana or Cayo Levantado instead. If you are flexible, like to explore and will eat out in Las Terrenas some nights, Sublime gives you a beautiful beach base at a fair price.

Insider tips

  1. Request an ocean-view suite with a balcony hot tub and get the confirmation in writing.
  2. Ask which restaurants will be open during your dates, especially outside peak season.
  3. Stock the kitchen from a Las Terrenas market for terrace breakfasts.
  4. Book whale-watching boats from Samaná town early for February.

FAQ

Sublime Samaná Hotel & Residences questions, answered

Is Sublime Samaná all-inclusive?

No. Meals are à la carte at the Bistro and the Beachside Grill and every suite has a full kitchen. That makes it easy to mix hotel dinners with meals in Las Terrenas, a few minutes away. Couples who want everything prepaid would be happier at an all-inclusive elsewhere in the country.

Is Sublime Samaná kid-free?

No. Families stay here and the long pool has a children's section at one end and a kid-free section at the other. With a small number of guest suites, it rarely feels busy. Couples who want quiet can ask for a suite away from the family end of the pool.

How do we get to Sublime Samaná?

Fly into Samaná El Catey (AZS), about 45 minutes away, or Santo Domingo (SDQ), about two and a half hours by highway with more nonstop options from the US. Book a private transfer ahead. A rental car helps for exploring, but avoid driving the hill roads at night.

When is the best time to visit?

December to April is drier and sunnier and from mid-January to March humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay. Summer is hotter and quieter, with good prices. Hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk from August to October, so consider travel insurance for those months.

Is the beach good for swimming?

Playa Cosón is long and beautiful but faces the Atlantic, so waves and currents can be strong, especially in winter. Mornings are often calmest. Swim where staff say it is safe, stay close to shore and never swim alone. Paddleboarding and kayaking work well on calm days.
